Appearance, materials, controls, assembly

The third generation of "tabs" came out in three faces. Senior and junior - in the classic ten-and seven-inch incarnations. Medium - in a less classic, but rapidly gaining momentum form factor of the "eight". That is, with an eight-inch display. More “square” than the seven-inch screen, which allows you to see more information, fell in love with users who want to have a small tablet since the time ... Well, you know the name of the popular tablet that pleased the world with its phenomenon last fall. Although it is quite possible to count from the Galaxy Tab 7.7, which was born even earlier and was one of the first eight-inch "tablets". Our editors got his descendant, Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 8.0, where 8.0 is the designation of the diagonal. This is him in the photo. And now - in more detail.

Design and construction

The line between tablets and smartphones is gradually blurring, largely due to the efforts of Samsung. It was this company that once created the first Samsung Galaxy Note, a smartphone with a screen diagonal of 5.3 inches. This seemed not enough to her, and heavy artillery was used in the form of Samsung Galaxy Mega 5.8 and Samsung Galaxy Mega 6.3. At the same time, small tablets gradually acquired 3G support, not only for the Internet, but also for calls. All these words are a long preamble, leading to the fact that it is extremely difficult to take it like that right away and figure out what kind of device is in front of you. And if it is also a Samsung device, which maintains uniformity in design ... And if it is also in the photograph, and without anything nearby, it’s a disaster at all.

Together with seven- and ten-inch tablets

True, I would not call such a nice device a disaster: although the Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 8.0 looks like a huge smartphone (most of all, it looks like an overgrown Galaxy S4), for some reason it is in the eight-inch version that corporate design looks the most advantageous. Moreover, it is very thin, elegant, and 314 grams will not burden the bag too much. This weight was achieved thanks to the case material: the lid, traditionally for Samsung, is made of plastic. White, smooth, in appearance and touch - of high quality and pleasant.

The cover is not removed, the battery, respectively - too. The manufacturer defined the slots for the SIM card and microSD on the left side, they are closed with the usual plugs (fortunately, without a paperclip key, which causes a lot of problems).

On the right side there is a power button and volume control, as well as an infrared port for using the tablet as a universal control panel. At the top is an audio jack for a headset, at the bottom are microUSB and small stereo speakers. With a normal landscape grip, it is easy to cover them with your fingers, this must be taken into account. True, their location is much better than it could be: even today there are enough tablets with speakers on the “back”: they are covered, if not by the surface, then by some kind of cover.

Display and ergonomics

Buttons for android controls are located under the screen and do not take away its valuable millimeters. One of them is physical, two are sensory. Convenient and no frills. But still, it is already inconvenient to manage with one hand at such dimensions. Even if you have large palms, you will need both to actively work with the tablet.

The screen with a resolution of 800x1280 pixels at eight inches does not impress with its pixel density and the whole picture that follows from it, which can be seen in the Samsung Galaxy S4. However, the grain is almost invisible, and it's definitely no worse than its direct competitor - the Apple iPad Mini, and even a little better (189 ppi for Tab 3 versus 152 for a small apple tablet). The tablet's sensor is very sensitive, it distinguishes up to 10 simultaneous clicks, the colors are subjective, pleasant, bright, but not "slick", as is the case with Amoled. True, there is no black color, like Amoled, here, therefore, the measured contrast ratio - average, or slightly higher, was 611:1.

The screen is prone to coolish shades, but they can be somewhat "warmed" using the settings menu. There you can choose dynamic, standard or cinematic mode. By the way, watching a movie on a tablet is nice, thanks to the 16:10 aspect ratio. Movies can be watched in a small company in the sense that the viewing angles are wide. On a fine sunny day, you can read on the street, but watching a movie is no longer so comfortable. For viewing sites, it seems to me more pleasant is the "square" 4: 3 format, like ... well, you understand who. Why? Sites do not look like narrow stripes. However, a user who is already accustomed to Internet surfing from a smartphone will not perceive this as an inconvenience. Below we have given graphs of measurements of the colorimeter.

System and performance

Responsible for operation and performance is a dual-core Exynos processor with a frequency of 1.5 GHz, along with Mali-400 MP graphics. To help them - one and a half gigabytes random access memory and 16GB storage. It's not much, but since there is a microSD slot, I don't see a problem. The filling is average, especially for a device with such a large screen, but it is quite enough for watching movies in FullHD resolution and for 3D games. I had a chance to play on it in Real Racing 3 and Dead Trigger. The tablet did not slow down, it is pleasant and comfortable to play on it: a large screen with a light body creates a good base for games with a motion sensor. The Android 4.2 Jellybean interface, TouchWiz worked smoothly, but with a clogged memory in test modes, there were rare slowdowns.

The operating system and its "buns" here are about the same as all other Samsung devices in this price category. So, for example, there is face recognition: if you do not look at the screen, it goes out. And you can also set up gestures and slow down the player by closing the top of the screen, or take a screenshot by swiping the edge of your hand across the display (by the way, why? Is this function really necessary for an ordinary user?). Given the large diagonal, any multitasking user can appreciate the possibility of working in two applications displayed on the screen at the same time. Well, let's say, watching movies and checking mail is convenient! I also really like the customizable Android 4.2 Jellybean control panel, which can be called up by swiping up from the bottom.

Here you have access to the most important things, such as activating Wi-Fi or turning off the sound, as well as a screen brightness bar. You can use the Tab 3 as a smartphone, but, as expected, it is inconvenient without a headset: the handset is too big. The smartphone interface here is quite understandable, ordinary.

Camera

Five megapixels with autofocus, but no flash - for a tablet, in my opinion, this is more than enough. Even with such a small mass, shooting from such a colossus is somewhat difficult. However, it might come in handy. Below are sample shots and a video in 720p, the highest possible resolution for the Tab 3's built-in camera.

Cats consider filming with a tablet inappropriate and refuse to pose

Sound

The speakers are quite loud, in a quiet room you can watch a movie without resorting to headphones. However, it is better to resort to the latter: the speakers are decent, almost do not creak at maximum volume, in addition to the most dynamic moments, but the sound is given out with little detail and flat. But to grind with a friend on Skype or watch a movie - it's possible. But with headphones, the Galaxy Tab 3 turns into a full-fledged audio player with good sound. Only very big.

Autonomy, noise, heating

The eight-inch Tab 3 comes with a massive 4450 mAh battery, which allows it to work for about two days on a single charge in medium-active mode, but if you use the tablet actively, then, like a regular smartphone, you have to charge it every evening. In Ukraine, Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 8.0 can be purchased for more than 3,000 hryvnia.

Competitors

Of course, there are not very many branded tablets in the eight-inch form factor. And the most obvious competitor is a close relative of the Samsung Galaxy Note 8.0. It looks less like a smartphone, that is, its frame is not so narrow, and it itself is not so thin and a little heavier than the Tab 3. But the Note 8 is equipped with an S-Pen and special applications for it. The brothers' hardware and screen are similar, but the Note has a faster processor and more RAM. Well, and one more competitor, where without it - Apple iPad Mini. It's a matter of personal preference which one to choose, but if you want to use the tablet as a smartphone, then you obviously don't like the iPad. In addition, the market is full of 7-inch competitors, such as the new Nexus 7 with 3G, which has a very attractive price.

In the dry matter

For some reason it seems to me that it is the eight-inch Tab 3 that has the greatest chances of conquering the market among all the tablets in the family. It should especially appeal to female representatives: it is small, light, with a nice design and support for most modern Android features. And in which case, the smartphone can replace. About 3 thousand hryvnia (12,000 rubles) - this is the price for the WiFi version of the tablet. For Galaxy Tab 3 8.0 c 3g, you will have to pay more than 4 thousand Ukrainian money or about 16,000 Russian. The price in the light of slightly more expensive competitors seems very attractive.

As you probably know, Samsung is the world's largest manufacturer of Android devices, and the second largest supplier of tablets to the global market after Apple. We have repeatedly had the opportunity to make sure that the tablets of the Korean manufacturer have very good capabilities and are one of the best options when it comes to buying an Android tablet.

If you're looking for a tablet that combines the large-screen experience that 10-inch devices provide us with the compactness that's a hallmark of 7-inch tablets, then you've certainly looked at Samsung's 8-inch tablets. With one of them, Samsung Galaxy Note 8.0, we introduced you in this review, and today I want to present you with a review of a cheaper Galaxy Tab 3 8.0.

And before we get into a detailed look at the pros and cons of this tablet, let's brush up on its main specs.

Long battery life

disadvantages

Screen resolution is only 1280 x 800 pixels

Slowness in some applications

Hardware navigation buttons are sometimes inconvenient to use

Traditionally, tablets have a bad camera.

Relatively high price

The new Nexus 7 (2103) is already on sale

Design, materials and build quality

Like its more expensive counterpart, the Galaxy Note 8.0, the Galaxy Tab 3 is practically no different in design from Samsung smartphones and looks like a noticeably grown Galaxy S4. It has a screen with the same aspect ratio, its body has the same metallized frame at the ends, and even the location and shape of the navigation buttons on this tablet are the same as those on the Galaxy S4.

Also, the case materials that Samsung uses in the production of the latest models of its smartphones and tablets are no different. The Galaxy Tab 3 is half a millimeter thinner than the Galaxy Note 8.0 and has a weight comparable to smaller 7-inch tablets.

The back panel of the tablet is made of the same slippery plastic that Samsung has been using for a long time, so the main drawback of this solution is probably familiar to you - it collects your fingerprints very well, and in order for the tablet to look neat, you will have to regularly wipe not only its screen but also the back panel.

In addition, when running heavy applications and games, the slippery body of the tablet noticeably heats up, which does not add to its ease of use.

For the rest - everything is fine. We did not notice any squeaks and backlashes between the body elements, they all fit perfectly, the buttons respond adequately to pressing with excellent tactile feedback.

In spite of appearance, and the Galaxy Tab 3 looks quite elegant, the tablet leaves an impression of a well-assembled and reliable device.

As for the controls, the tablet has a minimum of them. These are the power buttons, the volume rocker, the mechanical home button, and two touch-sensitive navigation buttons located below the screen.

At the bottom of the tablet, you'll find a microUSB port. There are also stereo speakers on the bottom. Some Android device manufacturers have abandoned the microSD card slot, but Samsung still equips its tablets with it. The lid that covers it looks quite flimsy, so you'll have to handle it with care. At the top end, traditionally located headset jack.

In general, the design is perfectly balanced, the tablet is quite comfortable to hold even with one hand. The only inconvenience that you may have is the navigation buttons located too close to the edge of the tablet, which are uncomfortable to press when you hold it with both hands in a landscape orientation.

Screen

A year ago, or even half a year ago, choosing a resolution of 1280 x 800 pixels for an eight-inch screen would have seemed perfectly reasonable. Now, especially after the introduction of the second generation Nexus 7 with a screen resolution of 1920 x 1200, it seems insufficient.

Although I can’t say that 1280 x 800 resolution is bad. Let's not forget that a couple of years ago, screens of this resolution were used only in flagship devices from leading manufacturers.

Traditionally, Samsung has used very high quality panels in the production of screens for its tablets, which have excellent color reproduction, brightness levels and viewing angles. The screen of our Galaxy Tab 3 8.0 was no exception in this regard.

Camera

I have always been of the opinion that a tablet is not the kind of device that should be used for photography and video shooting and was cool about the technical parameters of the cameras used in these devices. Moreover, so far their matrices are far enough not only from camera matrices, but also from multi-megapixel matrices, which are installed by many manufacturers in their smartphones.

And here the Galaxy Tab 3 8.0 is also no exception. Its cameras (rear 5-megapixel and front 1.3 MP) take pretty mediocre pictures. The quality provided by the tablet's front camera is sufficient for video chatting, but pictures taken with the rear camera will suffer from noise and look washed out even in bright natural light.

Software

Galaxy Tab 3 8.0 is running an operating system Google systems Android 4.2.2, which is hidden under the Samsung TouchWiz proprietary shell. Some smartphone and tablet owners love TouchWiz, and some don't. But, in fairness, it is worth noting that there are still more advantages in it than disadvantages. Owners of the Galaxy S4 will find almost all the branded “buns” on the Galaxy Tab 3 8.0, except, perhaps, only the ability to turn the tablet into a remote control remote control TV due to the lack of an infrared transmitter.

You can change the number and order of the tables, scroll through them and do all those familiar to us from the latest generations of Samsung Android devices. Using TouchWiz is quite convenient, and you will not find any terrible flaws in it.

However, it is not clear why the shortcuts in the application drawer are not sorted alphabetically by default, and this can sometimes be annoying, especially when the number of programs installed on the tablet exceeds three or four dozen.

Also, for some reason, the notification shade, when you lower it, takes up the entire width of the screen, as it happens on smartphones, and not on tablets. The quick settings access panel seems a little cluttered, as some of the shortcuts it contains are duplicated at the top of the notification shade.

Everything else, including a set of branded "smart" features, mostly causes mostly positive emotions. This is, for example, the Smart Stay mode, which does not turn off the backlight of the screen while you look at it. True, smart screen rotation, which selects the optimal screen rotation (portrait or landscape) according to the position of your head, works correctly exactly in half of the cases, although the idea behind it is quite ingenious.

One of the great things that will definitely appeal to you is the ability to run applications in multi-window mode. It is activated with a long press on the "Back" button, after which you can select the programs you would like to work with at the same time on the retractable sidebar. Unfortunately, this feature only applies to a limited range of applications.

Voice control is activated by double-clicking the Home button, but this feature is still in serious need of improvement and cannot be compared with the capabilities of Google Now. And what's even worse is that it causes a delay in the response of the Home button, since the system needs some time to wait for whether the second press will occur or not. However, at any time you can disable voice assistant S Voice.

Performance and battery life

The Galaxy Tab 3 8.0 is powered by Samsung's own Exynos 4212 processor, which is a dual-core System-on-a-Chip that combines two ARM Cortex-A9 computing cores running at 1.5 GHz and GPU ARM Mali-400 MP4. This chip is paired with 1.5 GB of RAM. Both the first and second, of course, are clearly not enough for a modern tablet, as you will see almost in the first minutes of using the tablet.

Theoretically, a dual-core ARM Cortex-A9 processor with one and a half gigabytes of “RAM” should be quite enough to serve the operating system itself, but do not forget that the aforementioned TouchWiz shell consumes a lot of resources, which constantly “slows down” something in one, then elsewhere.

Moreover, the pattern of occurrence of these lags is quite difficult to detect. Moving between desktops is mostly smooth, but sometimes the animation "stumbles". The application drawer seems to work smoothly, but here you can sometimes notice delays.

Changing the screen orientation on Android devices in the old days caused a lot of criticism, but on modern devices, we have almost forgotten about delays when switching. Galaxy Tab 3 8.0 you will occasionally shake in the hope of speeding up the switch from one screen orientation to another.

How about tests? If you are interested, the Galaxy Tab 3 8.0 scores just over 10,000 points in AnTuTu, which, frankly, is far from the worst result, but do not forget that we are talking about a tablet, the price of which is noticeably higher than the average price for such devices.

But the battery life of this tablet will be very pleasant surprise. Samsung equipped it with a 4450 mAh battery, and the tablet's processor, coupled with the screen, consumes its charge quite economically. You shouldn't have any problem charging your Galaxy Tab 3 8.0 once every 2 days, with fairly heavy daily use. Unless, of course, you watch movies or play heavy games all day long, and the tablet screen brightness is set to "Auto".

Conclusion

So what can be said about new Galaxy Tab 3 8.0? Personally, it seems to me that this tablet is not suitable for the role of leader. If we compare it with the Apple iPad Mini (not taking into account the difference in operating systems), then samsung tablet wins both in its cost and in equipment from its competitor.

But if we compare the Galaxy Tab 3 8.0 with the seven-inch Google Nexus 7 sample of 2013, then our tablet is inferior to it in almost everything: price, screen resolution, performance and even form factor (although the form factor is a moot point).

Therefore, many will choose the Samsung tablet as a cheaper alternative to the iPad Mini, but for those who need an inexpensive compact, but modern device, I would recommend taking a closer look at the new Nexus 7.

Samsung fans who can't seem to get away from the branded additions to the "pure" Android found on Google tablets may opt for the Galaxy Tab 3 8.0 for that very reason. But is it worth it to overpay a fairly tangible amount? Personally, I'm not at all sure.

If this tablet cost at least as much as the new Nexus costs, it would have a fairly cloudless future. In a nutshell, in my humble opinion, the Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 8.0 is a tablet for those who choose a friend not with their mind or wallet, but with their heart.

The number one Korean electronics manufacturer in the world (according to various estimates of the popularity of released devices), Samsung is constantly working to improve and develop models of its devices. As a result, many products released under this brand conquer the market in one niche or another, becoming the most popular and famous gadgets. Of course, this positively affects the sales volumes that the manufacturer manages to achieve.

In order to more specifically show what one of the products of this brand is, we will small review one of them. Meet, we present to you the SM-T311 tablet (also known as Tab 3 8.0). The device has a number of its features, which can boast to its potential buyer. About them, as well as about many other positive and negative aspects in this device, we will talk in this article.

Appearance

Of course, we will start with its appearance. After all, it is with this criterion that we encounter every time we take this device in our hands. Immediately I would like to note that the device has a rather unsightly design, reminiscent of the appearance of similar models. However, the design of the SM-T311 makes such an impression on those who are not at all familiar with the device. In fact, there is a certain style in the appearance of the device. Take, for example, the glass screen that covers the entire front of the tablet, giving it a glossy sheen. The same effect is created by the shiny back cover of the tablet. It is made of plastic and has a similar texture to the front side of the tablet. On it we find only the inscription of the manufacturer of the device SM-T311 (Samsung) and the camera window, the characteristics and capabilities of which we will discuss later.

Due to the fact that the gadget has rounded edges, its entire body looks quite stylish, it is in perfect harmony with the glossy texture.

Navigation

With elements that allow you to navigate the capabilities and functionality of the device, everything is quite standard here. The tablet has the standard physical Menu, Home and Back buttons located below the screen. They are equipped with additional illumination, which makes it possible to work with them in a dark room. Some users complain that the virtual form of such buttons could be a more convenient solution for the company, as this would save space at the bottom of the phone.

In addition to these, we should also mention the metal-colored buttons for turning on the device and adjusting the sound. They are located on the side faces. This is a standard scheme, which is also supplemented for the exchange of information.

In general, we can say that Samsung made the control of the SM-T311 as classic as possible, so that users do not have to retrain to work with this model.

Display

By the name of the gadget Tab 3 8.0 SM-T311 it is immediately clear what kind of screen it has. We are talking about an 8-inch display that works on the basis of a matrix (PLS technology). The screen resolution, according to the technical parameters, is 1280 by 800 pixels. As the instruction describing the tablet SM-T311 notes, the image on the tablet's display has a density of 189 dpi square. This, of course, is very small if we talk about direct competitors like the Amazon Kindle, equipped with stronger matrices with a FullHD picture.

In this regard, of course, you can only bet on a non-standard screen size, because all these gadgets have a display with a diagonal of 7 inches, but not 8 inches. In this case, the 7.9-inch iPad mini is considered the closest to it, but the level of prestige here is, of course, quite different.

However, the SM-T311 tablet, whose technical characteristics cannot be called the most outstanding, can also boast of a high screen brightness. Due to its image appears more saturated and at the same time is more adapted to work in bright sunlight or in a well-lit room. The content of the screen does not fade, but remains quite readable.

Performance

Describing how productive our SM-T311 tablet is, the characteristics of which we have already begun to give earlier, its “heart” should be noted. This is the processor that drives the entire operating system of the device. In this case, we are talking about Samsung Exymos - a dual-core processor, clock frequency each of which is 1.5 GHz. These are quite good indicators, giving good performance of processor power and graphics. This is noted by both ordinary users and specialists. For example, in the rating table in terms of the speed of interaction of the processor, the device described by us overtook Asus Transformer Prime TF201, Motorola Atrix, Samsung Galaxy Tab 10, Samsung Galaxy Nexus and more. User reviews confirm this: the tablet works fast enough, while some freezes (even when running more “demanding” software) are minimal here.

The RAM of the SM-T311 is somewhat extended (compared to the parameters of many similar devices). So, the developer installed 1.5 GB of RAM here so that the user can more freely open various applications without worrying about stability.

autonomy

As the reviews describe, it is common for Samsung-branded tablets to have endurance issues. As the characteristic shows, a battery with a capacity of 4450 mAh was installed on the SM-T311. With the help of this power supply, the capacity of which, admittedly, is at a fairly high level, the tablet can work up to 11 hours, given that the user will sit on a WiFi network and watch videos.

The maximum load on the system gives 4-hour work, after which the smartphone completely consumes its battery. This, again, is a good indicator, given that we are talking about the work of a colorful, large display and a serious iron “stuffing” on one device.

Operating system

As you might guess, the Android operating system (version 4.2.2) is installed on the tablet. It has a special graphical shell designed exclusively for Samsung devices. It has a standard appearance, but differs mainly in a set of additional functions. For example, this is the ability to limit the output of information on the display of the device. The option is useful if you are driving and do not want unnecessary alerts to distract you from the road. Another example is the ability to display different running applications in two windows by resizing them. These options can actually make the tablet experience much easier in some situations.
