Adobe Reader is a free PDF viewer. We bring to your attention a selection of tips for working with the "Reader".

What is PDF?

When one format does not coexist with another, there is an incompatibility problem. Attempts of various kinds of universalization are constantly being made. Perhaps the most well-known universal document distribution format is PDF. The abbreviation PDF stands for "Portable Document Format", translated into Russian - a portable document format. Developed by Adobe about 15 years ago, the format is considered the global standard for replicating and exchanging secure electronic documents. The PDF format received official recognition only last year, and, admittedly, it is not widely used in all areas of working with documents. Most often, the PDF format makes itself known in the publishing and printing business. Most technical documentation, books and magazines, etc. are usually distributed in this format. Often, all this has its own specific price on a par with paper products and is sold in online stores.

Let's try to figure out what was the reason for the distribution and widespread use of documents in this format - not only in publishing, but also on the Internet. Adobe PDF files are relatively small, due in part to the clean distribution of data, which can be huge in a single document. In addition, the format supports several types of raster information compression, and storing images in PDF is ultimately more profitable than out of the document. Bottom line - the format is optimal for sending by E-mail and posting on Internet resources.

Adobe itself speaks of the following advantages of its format:

Multiplatform- today PDF-format can be easily viewed by means of the operating system or using third-party programs. In addition, you can open PDF on Android. Supported platforms include Windows, Mac OS, UNIX, Palm OS, Symbian, Pocket PC. When a file is opened, its formatting is preserved, regardless of the application used and regardless of the program in which the document was created. True, at low resolution formatting is usually significantly distorted. The format is optimal for printing.

Wide use- According to Adobe, over 1,800 vendors have included some form of PDF support in their software. A well-known example is that all popular browsers (Internet Explorer, Opera, Mozilla Firefox) with add-ons are able to open PDF documents in their window.

Reliability- more than 250 million PDF documents on the Internet, including government and business resources, information is stored in this format. This fact already speaks volumes. (These figures, again, are named by Adobe. It is not known where these statistics come from).

High degree of integration- PDF files contain source information such as text, bitmaps (drawings, graphs), multimedia objects, 3D, maps - all in their original format. Fonts are integrated into the document, so even if they are not present in the operating system, they will be displayed correctly.

Security- Support for certificates and the ability to create a security password for any PDF document. In addition, the format includes an electronic signature mechanism to protect and authenticate documents.

Search capability- Due to the fact that the textual content of a PDF document is usually separated from the graphic one, a search within the document is provided. By the way, the Google search engine) indexes and searches for text on demand in PDF pages.

Availability- PDF documents are readable by disabled people. True, complex formatting makes it difficult to view, and therefore the criterion of "accessibility" is very relative. Moreover, much depends on the capabilities of the software used.

It is one thing, of course, to believe the words, facts, another thing is to see it from the user's point of view, to check how it works. We will not list the other advantages, of which there are many, but we will try to figure out how to organize PDF viewing in popular and not so popular programs. Next, we will look at programs that will help you deal with this format.

Format XPS - the new universal document standard?

Microsoft pleasantly surprised Windows Vista users with the new XPS (XML Paper Specification) format. It is an open format available under a free license. XPS is currently supported by the 2007 Microsoft Office System and there is talk of standardizing the format within the European Computer Manufacturers Association (ECMA) along with PDF.

The XPS file contains the paginated content displayed on the screen. This ensures that the document is printed correctly - with formatting preserved. XPS supports various security standards and is based on the XML language. Another tangible plus of the format is that it can be opened as an archive in which everything is sorted into folders: formatting and marking elements, graphics (there is support for vector graphics). Compression is applied to XPS documents.

Sounds tempting, but it's not entirely clear when the format developed by Microsoft will be widely used, or if it will happen at all. So far, developers do not seek to include XPS in the list of supported documents, and users do not know anything about the format. You can use it with confidence only on computers based on Windows Vista, for other OSes of the Windows family, you need to download and install the add-on from www.microsoft.com.

As for the popular Microsoft Office 2007 package, XPS viewing also requires the installation of a special add-on. Details can be found here. By the way, the same applies to PDF, which Office does not natively support. Most likely, formats such as PDF, XPS, and ODF will be included in Microsoft Office 2007 Service Pack 2, which is scheduled for release in the second half of 2009.

Why is Adobe Reader without "Acrobat"?

It has long been customary to call the program Adobe Reader Acrobat Reader. But this tradition will be broken today, because now Acrobat Reader means a program for editing (!) PDF documents. In view of this, the distribution kit with the program takes several tens of times more than Reader.

Thus: Adobe Reader is a program for viewing PDF documents, Adobe Acrobat Reader is for editing.

Why Acrobat 9?

The interface of the program is improving - this is obvious. However, Adobe Reader progresses from version to version in such a way that it is difficult to notice changes at a glance. In our opinion, first of all it is necessary to highlight the following features compared to previous versions:

  • Increase startup speed.
  • Adobe Reader 9 MUI (multi-language interface). True, you need to download the version in your language, since you cannot change the language through the program interface.
  • Increased security.

Where can I download?

It is available at. The size of the program is about 25 MB, which is not very much for a download. Additionally, the program includes the AIR complex (modern web application development technology). At the moment, version 9.1 is available for download from the site, but after launching the program, a suggestion appears to download a newer version. This is not so important: the differences between these versions are not very significant. If you need a special version, it's easier to download it through the page. Here you can also choose to download the Russian-language version of the program. Previous versions of Reader (7-8) are also available, but there is practically no point in downloading them.

What other versions of Adobe Reader are there?

As already mentioned, the usual Adobe Reader program is completely free (otherwise, today's material would not be here). In addition to the free version, there are three more versions of the package - Standard for $299, Pro for $449 and Pro Extended for $699. It is not necessary to write in detail about the differences between the versions. The higher the price, the closer the functionality of Reader approaches its older brother, Adobe Reader. If you are interested in the functionality of each version, visit the page. But it is unlikely that a regular user will need something more than just viewing PDF documents.

Will Reader launch for me?

From version to version, the system requirements for the program to work vary, but not by much. For Reader 9 they sound like this:

  • Microsoft® Windows® XP Home, Professional, or Tablet PC Edition with Service Pack 2 or 3 (32-bit or 64-bit); Windows Server® 2003 (with Service Pack 2 for 64-bit); or Windows Vista® Home Basic, Home Premium, Business, Ultimate, or Enterprise with or without Service Pack 1 (32-bit or 64-bit) and Microsoft® Windows® 2000 with Service Pack 4.
  • Processor with a clock speed of 1.3 GHz or higher
  • RAM 128 MB (recommended 256 MB)
  • 335 MB of free hard disk space (Note: during installation, the program creates temporary files, so the required free hard disk space exceeds the specified value)
  • Screen resolution 800? 600
  • Video hardware acceleration (optional)
  • Microsoft Internet Explorer 6.0, 6.0 with Service Pack 1, 7.0 or 8.0; Firefox 2.0 or 3.0

However, the last point is not obligatory at all. A browser is needed only if you want to go to the developers' site.

MacOS, Linux, and Solaris have their own versions of Adobe Reader. There are portable versions for Palm OS, Pocket PC and Symbian OS. All in all, Reader runs on 23 (!) platforms and 33 languages.

How to speed up the launch?

In the latest version of Reader, the cold start speed has increased. However, Adobe Reader is quite a resource intensive application. On insufficiently productive machines, the program tends to slow down: both at startup and while viewing a document. How to change the situation for the better?

The first option is to install another PDF viewer, of which there are a lot. Foxit PDF, etc.

But if you do not want to change the Reader, you can use the small Adobe Reader SpeedUp utility. With its help, it is easy to disable unnecessary Adobe Reader modules that you will not use and disabling which will not affect the negative side. True, the performance gain in the latest version of Reader is not very significant. Why? Previous versions of Adobe Reader had quite a few modules that worked out of the box. In Reader 9, the developers tweaked Reader and removed unnecessary modules from launch.

An alternative way to get rid of modules is to manually remove them. Only in this case, you need to be careful and be sure to make a backup copy of the files. So, we find the folder with Adobe Reader installed (\Program Files\Adobe\Reader 9.0\Reader\ by default) and open the plug_ins folder. API files can be moved to any temporary folder. Now launch Reader. If the program works flawlessly, delete the temporary folder at the moment.

How to make reading more comfortable for the eyes?

There are a few simple tips for this.

Don't forget about the full-screen reading mode (see hotkeys below). When you press Ctrl + H, automatic scrolling of the document is activated, but, subjectively, with large amounts of text, your eyes get tired of such “dynamic” reading.

PDF documents look best at their original scale. Especially when it comes to single-layer files, it is definitely better to use a scale of 100%: in this case, the fonts are not distorted.

The main display options are concentrated in the Page View section. Take a close look at the Rendering section and set up the optimal anti-aliasing for viewing documents. It is worth noting that the best anti-aliasing quality is provided by the For portable devices/LCD monitors option. Below there are other settings, but they no longer apply to fonts. See Improve fine lines, etc.

If you are viewing documents on a widescreen monitor with a large diagonal (19 inches or more), it makes sense to display two pages at once on one screen. For this, the View - Page View - Pairwise command is intended. Also do not forget about the function keys F8 and F9. They are designed to hide extra panels. When you click again, these panels will simply return.

The rearrangement of the document deserves special attention.

What is PDF reflow?

Reflowing a document is displaying it as a single column as wide as the document pane. Sometimes this can make the document easier to read. This applies to cases where the structure of the document is too complex to understand.

Reflow is performed on the body text of the file. Forms, comments, digital signature fields, page numbers and headers and footers are not affected. Pages with form fields or a digital signature are not reflowed.

To re-arrange, select View - Scale - Re-arrange from the menu.

Why can't save changes to a PDF document?

Even if you use one of the paid versions of Reader, if you change the file (adding notes, comments, etc.), in many cases it will be prohibited from saving a modified copy of the document. Why? Thus, the owners (copyright holders) of the PDF file protect their files from unauthorized copying.

Why can't text be selected and copied?

Text in some PDF documents cannot be copied to the clipboard. It's a shame, but unfortunately it can't be fixed. The reasons for this are many. Here are some of them.

First, the document you opened could just have been scanned. In this case, each page is a single image. Secondly, this can be done intentionally - to prohibit copying of text or to protect it from being indexed by search engines (see the question below).

However, even from such pages you can "pull out" the text. As a tool, you can use a text recognition program. The best known is FineReader, which has some not-so-competitive counterparts in the form of online text recognition web services. The probability of successful text recognition depends on how clearly the text is displayed in the document.

Does it make sense to publish a PDF on the web?

A very interesting and relevant question for site owners. Is it worth it to publish PDF files along with HTML documents? Will the text of the document be available in the search? In other words, will search engines index it? There are many questions, and it is possible to answer them with confidence: yes. PDF documents that have a text layer will be correctly recognized and indexed by search engines. At least the most famous Western and Russian-language search engines do this very well.

On the other hand, if possible, it is better to save pages in HTML format, since it is more convenient to edit text in HTML.

What hotkeys will be useful?

List of keyboard shortcuts to which frequently used actions are assigned

How to remove Bonjour

Now let's talk about the unpleasant features of the entire Adobe line. True, for Adobe Reader version 9 the problem is irrelevant, but in the 8th version it takes place.
It's all about the service with the beautiful name Bonjour, which is installed and works together with other software from Adobe. Internet says that "Bonjour software allows computers and other network devices to automatically discover network resources, computers, devices, and services without the need for additional parameters such as IP addresses or DNS servers."

Automatic updating works "by itself", without the permission of the user. As soon as you launch Adobe Reader 8, work in it, something immediately starts downloading.

You can uninstall this service in the following way.

Open a command console (Win + R, type cmd and press Enter. Run two commands:

sc stop “Bonjour Service”
sc delete “Bonjour Service”

Thus, we stopped and removed the service.

Then download the program LSP -fix. After launching it, check the box I know what i`m doing ... (I know what I'm doing). Below is a list of various files. Select mdnsnsp.dll and move it to the right side. Click Finish and restart your computer. Finally, delete the Program Files\Bonjour\ folder.
