Possessing a 6-color printing system, a minimum drop size of 1.5 pl, and a high print resolution of 5760x1440 dpi, the Epson Stylus Photo R270 home photo printer will allow you to get professional quality photos in formats from 10x15 cm to A4. You can always print your photos either directly from your digital camera or from your PC. The photo printer has the function of printing on the surface of CD / DVD1, which allows you to create a unique design for your archives of music, films and photos without leaving home!

Separate ink cartridges

A feature of the printer is the use of separate high-capacity ink cartridges. This allows you to significantly reduce the cost of printing - when the ink of one color runs out, you only need to change the cartridge with this ink, and not the entire set. You also don't have to purchase any additional cartridges - neither for text printing nor for printing photos.

The Epson Stylus Photo R270 printer comes with two types of cartridges: standard and high capacity. This provides flexibility in the choice of consumables. And the use of high-capacity cartridges can significantly reduce the cost per print.

Each Intellidge cartridge is equipped with a special microchip that transmits information about the level of remaining ink on the screen and notifies you when a particular color needs to be replaced. A partially used cartridge can be removed from the printer and then reinstalled. For example, before a large volume of printing, you can install new cartridges, and then return and reuse the old ones.

The highest quality photo printing

The Epson Stylus Photo R270 represents a new generation of Epson photo printers that take photo quality to the next level. The 6-color printing system, combined with resolutions up to 5760 x 1440 dpi and a reduced minimum ink drop size of 1.5 pl, ensures the highest detail, accurate halftone reproduction and no graininess.

Epson Claria's advanced fast-drying inks, combined with genuine Epson photo papers, deliver superior color fidelity, true-to-life colors, and a color gamut that surpasses analog photo printing.

Your photos are guaranteed to last long and bright - when printed on genuine Epson media, Epson Claria ink has a lightfastness of up to 200 years2. The prints come out of the printer already dry.

High print speed
Epson's MicroPiezo print head with advanced variable droplet technology allows you to achieve high print speeds. At the same time, even in the maximum print modes, it is possible to achieve high speed without loss of quality due to the use of a unique Printing Technology with Variable Size Drops - when larger drops are used to reproduce solid color areas, and ultra-small drops are used to draw details and halftones.

Printing borderless photos
The borderless printing feature allows you to print 10x15 cm, 13x18 cm and A4 photos without white borders around the edges of the printout. You can use it both when printing from a computer and without it.

Printing on the surface of discs

The print directly on the surface of CDs allows you to design your CD/DVD1. Using the Epson Print CD program, a disc layout is created, the disc is loaded into a special tray, and in a few seconds a CD with a unique design is ready!

In addition to standard discs, the printer also supports mini disc printing.

PC-Free Printing

The printer has an optional USB connector that supports PictBridge and USB Direct Print. USB Direct Print and PictBridge technologies allow you to print photos directly from your digital camera without using a computer.

Simply connect a compatible camera to your printer and print amazing quality photos. Viewing photos and managing printing is done from a digital camera (direct printing options may vary depending on the camera model).

The color device will serve as a reliable assistant to the photographer, it is also used for printing in the office and at home. The color palette works with 6 colors. This unit works with an alternative mechanism - a modern ink system, which will provide savings from 10 to 20 times. CISS uses ink tanks hundreds and thousands of times. Quality printing maintains the same level as with the use of factory cartridges.

Appearance and size

An inkjet device of steel color and medium dimensions: 453x343x193 mm will comfortably fit into your office. Printer with a rounded matte surface is protected from scratches.

Functions

The presented model will perform exceptional images on the maximum A4 format, thanks to the resolution: 5760x1440 dpi and a minimum drop size of 1.5 pl. The unit can be purchased in Moscow and other cities of Russia, also in the online store TM Lucky-Print. There are convenient conditions for the delivery of goods.

Sergey Asmakov

How to sculpt the perfect sculpture? According to the recommendations of the masters, it is necessary to take a suitable block and cut off everything superfluous from it. Apparently, the creators of the EPSON Stylus Photo R270 printer did the same, and they got an excellent device for printing from a PC - we were able to verify this from our own experience.

The Stylus Photo R270 was added to EPSON's line of inkjet photo printers in September 2006, replacing the previously released Stylus Photo R220. As in the previous model, the Stylus Photo R270 uses a six-color printing system with a classic ink set that has already become traditional for devices of this class. However, when comparing these printers, you can find a lot of differences. For example, while the Stylus Photo R220 used Quick Dry ink, the Stylus Photo R270 uses Claria ink, a technological novelty introduced in the serial products of the Japanese company in the second half of last year. According to the developers, Claria inks produce brighter, more vibrant colors on prints, and when used with EPSON branded photo paper, they provide light resistance up to 200 years and ozone resistance up to 25 years.

Appearance of the model Stylus Photo R270

The Stylus Photo R270 printer is equipped with a non-replaceable piezoelectric print head that allows you to form droplets of various sizes (minimum volume - 1.5 pl). The maximum optimized resolution of this model is 5760x1440 dpi. According to the manufacturer, this printer (like other new models of this family), other things being equal, prints twice as fast compared to its predecessors. Let's take note of this statement in order to test it in practice.

The printer uses a separate
cartridges

As with other models in the Stylus Photo R/RX family, the new printer uses a system of separate ink cartridges for each of the applied colors. Thanks to this solution, maximum ink efficiency is achieved, regardless of the specifics of the tasks performed. It is worth noting that two types of cartridges are produced for this printer: standard and high-capacity. You can also purchase an economical package that includes all six cartridges for about 30% less than a similar set of cartridges purchased individually.

In terms of media handling capabilities, the Stylus Photo R270 can print on both plain and specialty papers, including glossy, semi-gloss and matte photo papers, as well as labels and thermal transfer media for textiles. The range of acceptable sheet sizes for the media used is from 89x89 to 215.9x1117.6 mm. In addition, a print mode is provided directly on the decorative surface of optical discs with a special coating (inkjet printable).

Although this model is mainly focused on working with a PC, it has USB port for direct connection of digital cameras and other external devices (particularly digital photo albums) that support PictBridge and/or USB Direct Print. Perhaps, this can complete the introductory part and proceed to a detailed description of this device.

In addition to the printer, the package includes network cable, disc loading frame (with removable insert insert), poster with installation and connection instructions, ink cartridge kit, warranty card, and CD with drivers and software.

Port for connecting digital cameras
on the front of the printer

At first glance, you can see a lot of new things in the design of this printer. Last fall, EPSON carried out a radical restyling of the housings of its devices, so the Stylus Photo R270 looks noticeably different from its predecessors. The body of the printer is made of dark plastic with a textured surface; on the side panels there are ventilation holes with original grilles, the shape of the cells resembling a honeycomb. The dark color of the case is effectively contrasted by a silver cover on the top panel, which provides access to the carriage of the printing mechanism for installing and replacing ink cartridges.

Significantly modifying the appearance of the printer, the developers have remained true to the layout proven over the years. The automatic media feed tray, equipped with a sliding sheet width guide, is located vertically at the rear of the chassis, and the output tray is located at the bottom of the front panel under a forward-opening cover. Both trays are equipped with telescopic panels to support the sheets. When not in use, the trays can be closed - this not only frees up some space in the workplace, but also prevents dust from entering the case when the printer is not in use.

There are only three buttons on the control panel of the Stylus Photo R270: one of them is used to turn the printer on and off, another to activate the procedure for installing or replacing cartridges, and the third to quickly cancel a job and resume printing after loading media. The user can learn about the current state of the device, as well as about the occurrence of errors or any other problems using the light indicators (they are installed above each of the buttons).

Buttons and indicators on the control panel

On the left side of the front of the printer, in a small recess, is a USB host controller port for direct connection of digital cameras. The purpose of this connector is clearly illustrated by the embossed PictBridge logo. The USB interface port used to connect the printer to a PC is located at the top of the rear panel, on the right side of the input tray.

The network cable is connected to the connector located in the recess on the rear panel. This connector is placed in such a way that the plug of the cable connected to it is parallel to the rear panel and does not protrude beyond the case, which allows, if necessary, to move the printer almost close to the wall.

Installing and connecting the printer did not cause any difficulties - especially since the whole process is clearly illustrated on the attached poster. The procedure for initializing the starter set of cartridges took only about two minutes. If the cartridges are already installed, then the printer is fully ready for use within 35 seconds after pressing the power button.

Loading paper in the automatic feeder tray is done in the usual way and hardly needs to be detailed description, but the procedure for loading disks must be discussed separately. As already mentioned, the Stylus Photo R270 can be used to print on the decorative surface of optical discs. The frame included in the package allows you to load both standard discs with a diameter of 120 mm and 80 mm “minions” into the printer (a special insert is used to install the latter). Unlike sheets of paper, the frame with the disc is loaded into the path of the printing mechanism from the side of the receiving tray. Before you start printing on a disc, you must switch the printer mechanism to the appropriate mode by lowering the lever located to the left of the output tray. In this case, the tray panel rises, being in a strictly horizontal position. The frame with the disk is inserted into special tray guides along which it moves during the printing process. To return to cut-sheet media, you must raise the lever to its original position.

Now just a few words about using the offline printing feature. When a digital camera compatible with PictBridge and/or USB Direct Print is connected to the printer port, the power indicator will flash to indicate that an external device is being detected. In this case, the print settings are managed through the camera menu.

Since the printer we are considering is designed mainly to work with a PC, you need to pay attention software included in the package. In addition to the drivers, e-Manual, and utility utilities, the CD-ROM contains a number of software tools, namely:

Easy Print Module;

Print CD for disc design;

Web-to-page for printing the contents of web pages;

Easy Photo Print for photo printing;

Print Image Framer for creating art frame layouts for framing pictures;

EPSON Creativity Suite, including Attach to Email, File Manager, and Scan Assistant;

Camera RAW plug-in for Easy Photo Print and EPSON Creativity Suite that allows you to work with RAW photos.

The print driver settings allow you to select one of five quality levels (Draft, Text, Text & Image, Photo, best photo), type and size of media being used, color settings, etc. In the layout settings, you can choose to print multiple pages on one sheet, as well as large images on multiple sheets for later gluing. There are functions for scaling the printed page (to a given media size or specifying the scale as a percentage of the size of the original), rotate and mirror the output image (the latter is necessary when printing on thermal transfer media).

For frequently used tasks, you can save custom settings with arbitrary names, which are added to the drop-down list. A separate tab contains buttons for activating service functions - printing a test pattern, cleaning the print head, etc.

The monitor program window, which automatically launches on the screen when a print job is sent, displays information about the current status of the printer, the level of ink in the installed cartridges, as well as problems that arise and methods for solving them. There are also buttons for pausing and canceling the current task.

It is worth talking a little about other programs from the package. Easy Photo Print is a photo printing package with a very simple and intuitive interface. The procedure for preparing pictures for printing is divided into three main steps: choosing photos, choosing paper type and size, choosing a layout, and framing an image.

Built-in Easy Photo Print allows you to work with images JPEG formats and TIFF, and by installing the supplied plug-in, you can implement support for images saved in RAW format. In the version presented on the disc, this module allows you to view and print images directly from RAW files saved by Canon EOS (10D, 20D, 300D and 350D), Nikon (D50, D70, D70s, D100 and D200), Konica Minolta Dynax DSLRs (5D and 7D), Olympus (E-1, E-300 and E-500), Pentax *ist (DS, DS2, D and DL), and EPSON R-D1 and R-D1s digital rangefinders.

Easy Photo Print uses the built-in file browser to select image folders. If there is a file with DPOF data in the selected image folder, it can be used to automatically select pictures. You can also search for pictures by file name and shooting date.

The program implements support for Exif and P.I.M. standards, so that the corresponding data stored in the headers of graphic files can be used in the mode of automatic correction of color and tonal parameters of printed images. There are also built-in image editing tools: rotate (in 90° increments), crop, frame, and red-eye removal (with automatic or manual setting). The templates available in the program allow you to display one or several images at once on one sheet of the selected format, as well as create index printouts.

EPSON Print CD lets you create and edit images for printing on discs with minimal effort and time. The user has tools for drawing lines, various geometric shapes, as well as creating inscriptions, the appearance of which can be transformed using various effects. Bitmap images can also be used in the design of the disc, combining them with other elements. This concludes the descriptive part, and now we will talk about our impressions of using the printer and present the test results.

Of course, we were interested in getting an unambiguous answer to the question of whether the information about a twofold increase in performance of the Stylus Photo R270 compared to previously released models is true. According to the results of the tests, printing a borderless image on Premium Glossy 10x15 cm paper in the "photo" mode takes 35-40 seconds, and with the highest possible quality - 2 minutes 15 seconds. The printer took just over 2 minutes to print a borderless image on a sheet of A4 Premium Semigloss paper in photo mode and 5 minutes 14 seconds in best photo mode.

We compared these results with the Stylus Photo R340, which was tested in our laboratory a little less than a year ago. To print a borderless photo on 10x15 cm Premium Glossy paper, this printer took 1 minute 34 seconds in normal mode and 3 minutes 40 seconds in the best quality setting. It took 5 min 14 sec to output a borderless image on A4 Premium Semigloss paper at normal quality and 9 min 14 sec at best. Thus, the Stylus Photo R270 really has a twofold performance advantage compared to the previous generation model.

It is gratifying that the increase in productivity did not affect the quality of the resulting prints. The printer perfectly reproduces both bright and saturated, and pale pastel shades; gradient fills look almost perfect. Very good results were obtained on glossy papers, including the new 300 g/m 2 Ultra Glossy Photo Paper. This type of paper is well suited for printing high-contrast photographs with bright, vibrant colors and fine detail. And for imitation and reproduction of artworks (for example, watercolors), paper with a matte finish is best suited.

It is unlikely that inexperienced people will be able to distinguish between photographs printed in the "photo" and "best photo" modes with the naked eye. And if so, then it makes no sense to use the maximum quality mode - especially considering that in this case the image output time will increase by about 2.5 times, and the ink consumption will be slightly higher. Even in the "photo" mode, the level of quality provided by this device allows you to fully satisfy the needs of not only beginners, but also experienced amateur photographers.

The monitor program window that appears
on the screen when sending a print job

During operation, the printer has demonstrated high reliability. The media feed mechanism worked perfectly, with no paper jams or multi-sheet pickups. Loading disks also did not cause difficulties. Despite the abnormally hot weather during testing, all printhead nozzles functioned normally, and contrary to our fears, it was not necessary to run a forced cleaning procedure.

Let's summarize. Among the advantages of the Stylus Photo R270 are high (for devices of this class) performance, excellent print quality on a wide range of media (including CD / DVD and thermal transfer paper), a system of separate ink cartridges and a diverse set of software. Of the shortcomings, only rather large (for A4 format devices) body dimensions can be noted - apparently, this is a tribute to the unification of the Stylus Photo R / RX family of models.

Easy Photo Print software - simple
and a handy tool for printing photos

Another serious argument in favor of the Stylus Photo R270 is its affordable price. This six-color printer, which can print an A4 photo in less than 2.5 minutes, can be purchased for about 3,500 rubles. Agree, a great option for those who print photos from a computer, since there is no need to overpay for extra functionality (for reference: the Stylus Photo R390 model, built on the basis of the same printing mechanism, but equipped with an offline printing system, a card reader and a display, will cost at least double the price). In addition, Stylus Photo R270 can be used as a regular home printer for everyday tasks - text output, graphics, etc. without any problems.

Compared to its predecessor, the Stylus Photo R220, which is still on sale, the R270 looks more attractive. Despite the fact that retail price of these devices is almost the same, Stylus Photo R270 wins more than twice in performance (not inferior in image quality) and has a small bonus - the ability to print directly from digital cameras.

The editors express their gratitude to the Moscow office of EPSON Europe B.V. for the provided Stylus Photo R270 printer and a set of consumables for it. For detailed information about EPSON products, visit http://www.epson.com/.
