What is better ps4 or xbox van. Which console is better: PS4 or Xbox One? PS4 or Xbox One: which looks better

Reading time: 7 minutes

Not so long ago, Microsoft pleased users with two modifications of the Xbox One console. The new models are called Xbox One S and Xbox One X. Each modification has both its advantages and disadvantages and is designed for different users. Let's study each model in more detail.

Xbox One S

Unlike the standard Xbox One, the S-modification has become smaller in size, but this is not the most important difference. The console's GPU has undergone some changes. The developers managed to increase its clock frequency, which gave a small increase in the frame rate per second (FPS). Due to this, players are less likely to encounter “blurred” game objects.

Support for 4K HDR has also become a good feature of the console. It is worth noting that 4K images are only available for using online streaming services (such as Netflix). However, HDR technology can be used in games.

Color gamut and shadows in games with HDR are deeper and richer. It has also become much easier to set up such an image on a TV. The console itself can set up your TV without forcing you to figure out how to activate this mode.

Despite the above advantages, the console is not without its drawbacks. This, first of all, depends on the TV model. In other words, not all TVs support 4K or HDR, so you'll need to consider replacing your TV to get the most out of your console.

Xbox One X

The developers decided to make this model really powerful by significantly updating its hardware. Microsoft managed to equip the console with the following technical parameters:

  • 12 GB of RAM;
  • Octa-core processor with a clock frequency of 2.3 GHz;
  • Updated 1.1 GHz GPU.

Like the Xbox One S, this console model has the ability to play 4K video, which makes watching movies and TV shows even more enjoyable, and you can also run games with HDR technology.

Thanks to all of the above innovations, the console has reached unprecedented performance. In all games, the quality of graphics has increased so much that all objects seem even more realistic than on other versions of Xbox One. It's also nice that all non-Xbox One X games run at 60 FPS.

Gamers can also be happy that Xbox One X will be able to run games that were released on Xbox One and One S. So do not be afraid of having to re-buy your favorite game. Also, all progress in the games will be saved.

Perhaps the main disadvantage is the price and, as in the case of the Xbox One S, the impact of the TV model on unlocking the potential of 4K and HDR technologies.

Which model to choose?

After reviewing the features of both consoles, we can summarize. Xbox One S is a great choice for those who just want to play their favorite games without worrying about high graphics settings. Although the graphics quality on this model is slightly behind the One X, this does not make it worse. The probability of FPS "drawdowns" is extremely small, and the "stuffing" of the console is able to run the newest games without any difficulties.

Or XBox One? For which of these consoles are the best games released? The debate about which of these game consoles is more worthy of the attention of gamers has not subsided since the first mention of them in the press. Today, after the presentations of both products, we are ready to discard speculation and make an objective comparison based on real details. So, in our ring Sony PlayStation 4 vs. XBox One from Microsoft.

Computing core

Both platforms are based on an eight-core AMD Jaguar x86-64 processor operating at a frequency of 1.75 GHz. More precisely, their computing power is provided by a "system on a chip" - a combined module that includes a central and graphic processors, a video codec and a RAM controller. Despite the identity of the CPU, the rest of the system parameters are quite noticeably different. First and foremost is the graphics.

Graphics subsystem

XBox One vs PS4 graphics are compared on the following specs:

  • FLOPS is the number of floating point operations performed by the GPU in 1 second (a measure of peak power). According to this parameter, the computing power of the Playstation 4 is 1.4 times higher than that of the new Xbox. (TFLOPS PS4 vs XBox One - 1.84:1.31).
  • The number of Shading units (shaders of the video chip), which are responsible for the speed of processing some parameters of three-dimensional graphics (textures, shadows, displacement of objects, etc.) and the realism of the image. PS4 vs XBox One has more of them: 1152 and 768 respectively. Plus, the video chip of the console from Sony has its own, unique shader system - the PlayStation Shader Language, the capabilities of which even surpass the current limits of OpenGL 4 and DirectX11.
  • The number of ROPs visualization units that are responsible for the clarity of the output image (the more, the better). The video card of the Sony set-top box has 32 such blocks, and Microsoft has 2 times less. The number of main computing units is also larger for Sony - 18 versus 12.
  • Among other things, the PlayStation 4 graphics processor has the advantages of supporting tessellation, which has a positive effect on the quality of object detail, and a more powerful accelerator.
  • And only one indicator, despite all the "buns" PS 4, adds Xbox bonuses - this is the clock speed of the GPU. At the console from Microsoft it is 853 MHz versus 800 from Sony. That is, in general, the graphics processor of the new Xbox is faster, so the visual quality of the graphics of both platforms is quite comparable. And if not to be too picky - the differences between them are not so great.

The conclusion is this. The graphical characteristics of the Sony PlayStation 4 are still better developed, and this opens up an unprecedented wide scope for game developers.

Drives and memory

The amount of RAM and there, and here is 8 GB. But the XBox One RAM modules against the PlayStation 4 have a lower bandwidth - 86 GB / s (DDR3 standard) compared to 176 GB / s for PS 4 (DDR5 standard). However, this only applies to the main unit. What the Microsoft console lacks in bandwidth, it makes up for with an additional ultra-fast 32MB ESRAM memory module.

As the main drives in both set-top boxes, hard drives with a capacity of 500 GB are used, plus there is access to cloud storage. This is enough for the gaming collections of the bulk of gamers. And for those who need special space, the creators of Xbox provided the ability to connect an external drive via USB, and the developers of Playstation 4 made the hard drive replaceable. Anyone who does not have enough 500 GB will be able to buy and install a more capacious drive.

Also, both consoles are equipped with drives for reading Blu-Ray and DVDs.

Interfaces

In terms of communicating with other devices through various interfaces, the characteristics of the XBox One and PS4 are as follows:

  • both consoles are equipped with USB 3.0 ports, a Wi-Fi module and an Ethernet network card for connecting to computer networks, it has HDMI and optical outputs;
  • the set-top box from Microsoft supports Wi-Fi Direct and DLNA technologies, which allows you to connect directly to other home network devices and quickly share media content, and also has an additional HDMI input;
  • The Sony set-top box is equipped with a Bluetooth 2.1 device and a 3.5 jack for connecting headphones.

Input Devices

The main device with which the user directly interacts is a gamepad (joystick). From him, like nothing else, depends on the convenience of managing the game and the comfort of the player. Which console has a better gamepad - the XBox One or the PlayStation 4?

Gamepad prefix from Microsoft compared to the previous release - Xbox 360, has not changed. The shape remained the same, only the location of some buttons changed, a cross was added, and the batteries were replaced with rechargeable batteries.

The joystick from Sony has changed much more significantly. First, it has become larger and heavier. Secondly, it has a touchpad for finer control of the game, and thirdly, the design of the controls has changed and several new buttons have been added.

As for the ease of use of gamepads, both of them are equally comfortable in the hands, but otherwise, each is good in its own way.

In addition to gamepads, both consoles support player motion capture devices - kinect and various motion controllers. The Kinect included with the new Xbox is equipped with two Full HD cameras and wide-angle lenses that capture the slightest movements of the player, and 4 built-in microphones pick up any noise around. All this is translated into the game and affects the course of its events. So, for example, the enemy will be able to detect your presence by the noise in the room. In addition, Xbox supports voice control.

The PS 4 has a similar device to the Kinect, but it is not included in the standard package and is purchased separately. Unlike the Xbox, Sony PlayStation 4 supports cameras and other motion controllers from previous versions of its consoles. But still, here the comparison of XBox One and PS4 is clearly in favor of the former.

Operating system and services

The PS4 operating system received more socialization features - applications for communicating with other players, modules for broadcasting game progress to the network with the ability to exchange comments, and even remote connection to the game. At the same time, these functions are not imposed on the user - if desired, they can be disabled. In a word, thanks to the OS, the game console justifies its purpose - it can only be used for games and communication.

Microsoft's concept is somewhat different. The corporation positions its device as a home media center, so it has developed as many as 3 operating systems for the new Xbox:

  • gaming system XBox OS;
  • mini-Windows (specially for set-top boxes);
  • and the hypervisor that controls these two systems - thanks to him, both XBox OS and Windows can be used simultaneously.

This order of the device of the operating system allows simultaneously with the game to watch, for example, cable TV channels ("picture in picture"), use a number of Smart TV functions, make Skype calls, surf social networks, etc. Which is better - XBox One or PS4 in terms of software is probably clear.

Games

The number of exclusive games for both consoles is still small, and at the moment Sony has more of them (25 versus 17). It is difficult to say who and how many of them will be in a few months - active development is being carried out by both competitors.

Today, at least five companies are preparing to release PS 4 exclusives. In contrast, at the presentation of the new Xbox, Microsoft representatives said that the corporation had invested a billion dollars in the development of new projects and would soon make its users incredibly happy. In addition, games for the Xbox will "fully" use the capabilities of the kinect, since every owner will have one.

At the moment, the following exclusive games for Sony PlayStation 4 have already been released:

  • bloodborne;
  • Killzone: Shadow Fall
  • Knack;
  • Lily Bergamo;
  • The Order: 1886;
  • Road Not Taken;
  • Uncharted 4: A Thief's End and others.

Microsoft, on the other hand, has exclusive rights to such games for XBox One as:

  • Quantum Break;
  • halo title;
  • Forza Horizon 2;
  • Forza Motorsport 5;
  • Crimson Dragon;
  • Halo 5: Guardians;
  • Halo: The Master Chief Collection and others.

Sales of consoles

Sales of PS4 and XBox One started at different times. A new console from Sony can be bought already in our camp at a price of about 18,000 rubles or 400 euros abroad. The package includes the console itself and the gamepad. Xbox in Russia will start selling in September 2014, but those who are not able to wait for this momentous event can purchase the console on Ebay and Amazon right today. The price of a set - a set-top box, a kinect and a gamepad, will be about 500 euros. Yes, such a purchase will hit the budget more seriously than the XBox 360 or Sony PlayStation 4, but, you see, it's worth it.

This concludes our review. What else can be said about these, of course, magnificent and noteworthy products? What to rely on when choosing?

If you prefer powerful hardware, detailed graphics and a large selection of exclusive games now, then the Sony PlayStation 4 is probably made for you. But for those who dream of a good multimedia "combine" with "gadgets" in the form of a kinect and agree that an exclusive product should be expensive, you should wait a little when Microsoft XBox One appears on the shelves of your hometown. And in fact, and in another case, the choice of the game console will be correct.

Quite a lot of time has passed since the presentation of the Sony PlayStation 4 and Xbox One game consoles. Many users have already managed to acquire them, so it's time to talk a little about the devices, as well as talk about their differences between each other.

I can say that many owners of the previous generation of Xbox and PlayStation consoles want to change their device to a more recent one, and it is not surprising, because a lot of games have been announced for the latest consoles, not to mention much improved characteristics. So my story will just come to the court.

Appearance

Here, you understand, everything is exclusively individual: someone likes one set-top box, someone likes the second, but making your choice based solely on the appearance of the gadget is at least wrong. On the other hand, I want the console to look beautiful and stylish. Believe me, in this regard, both devices look simply gorgeous - a sort of stylish minimalism. Personally, I'm a little more impressed with the Xbox, but only a little. Again, both consoles look stylish and fashionable, as you can see for yourself.

At the same time, I would like to note that the PS4 will be slightly more compact than its main competitor and the difference in size is quite significant. However, in the pocket of the device, you still can not put it, for that matter.

PS4 and Xbox One Specifications

And now let's see what is hidden under the plastic consoles. A small comparison of characteristics.

Console PS4 XBOX ONE
Processors AMD Jaguar 8-core CPU 1.84 GHz. AMD Radeon GPU with 18 compute modules 8-core CPU APU 1.75 GHz. AMD Radeon GPU with 12 compute modules
Random Access Memory (RAM) GDDR5: 8GB (5500MHz). Speed 176 Gb / s. DDR3: 8 GB (2133 MHz). Speed 68.3 Gb / s.
optical drive DVD and Blu-Ray DVD and Blu-Ray

Hard disk drive (HDD) 500 GB (replaceable) 500 GB (not replaceable, but external drive can be connected)
cameras PS4 Eye, 2 cameras with a resolution of 1280×800 (60 fps) Kinect 1, 1080p (30 fps) HD camera

For those who are not very versed in hardware, I can say the following: the PlayStation is clearly superior to its competitor. A good performance boost is provided by a more powerful graphics processor, as well as through the use of GDDR5 RAM, the bandwidth of which is much higher than that of DDR3. And even though Sony is clearly winning this round, judging by bare numbers is at least wrong, so we continue our comparison.

Joysticks

Now it's time to move on to joysticks, that is, controllers. Sony hasn't really changed the look of its joystick, which resembles that of the PS3. But it looks similar only externally, but the changes are actually very significant. For example, on the front panel you can see the touchpad, which can be used in some games. There's also a headphone jack, a speaker, and even a button for social media sharing. At the same time, this did not affect the usability in any way.

As for the joystick for Xbox, it has always been considered one of the most convenient among those on the market. I will say right away that the current alignment has not changed much - it is still an excellent controller that fits perfectly in the hands. But as for the workmanship, many experienced players claim that the quality of the plastic has become at least worse (it is more rigid), and the triggers require more effort to press. Perhaps this is so, but I personally did not notice such shortcomings.

In the end, we have a draw. I can only say that it will be convenient for someone to use one joystick, for someone else, and others will be delighted with both.

Social life

With each new generation of consoles, companies strive to diversify the player's life as much as possible, including adding the ability to access the Internet, in particular, social networks. There is no problem with this.

The PS4 comes with built-in video chat and the ability to use Facebook. In addition, by pressing a single button on the joystick, you can broadcast the gameplay directly to the network. You can post screenshots from games, talk about your achievements, ask other players for help in passing this or that moment in the game, and even transfer your control to one of them. However, in some cases, video broadcasts are prohibited due to copyright.

There will be no problems with access to the network with the Xbox. You can also stream an image, chat with other players, and more. It should be noted that Microsoft has finally abandoned the limited number of friends - now you can add an unlimited number of people to this list.

Game control body movements

Initially, the Kinect was mandatory for the Xbox (a tool for controlling the game using movements). For a long time it was believed that the set-top box would not work at all without it, but not so long ago it was announced that a set-top box without Kinect appeared on sale. However, most bundles include Kinect. So far, even for me, this thing remains unknown, however, users who have tried it claim that it feels your every movement and is able to pick up even the rhythm of the heartbeat.

As for the PS4, you can still purchase a PlayStation Move controller for it, with which you can control your favorite character. The device is sold separately from the console and costs only a few tens of euros.

Performance

Here, both consoles look great and if there is a difference in the same games, then these are just nuances that are not so easy to see on the monitor or TV screen. I deliberately do not give examples of paired stream records, because somewhere the Xbox One will lead, and somewhere - PS4. You can find similar videos on.

Exclusive games

There are several exclusive games for each of the consoles.

  • For PlayStation, these are: Basement Crawl, Dark Sorcerer, DriveClub, inFamous: Second Son, Killzone: Shadow Fall, Knack, The Order: 1886.
  • For Xbox One: Ryse: Son of Rome, Forza Motorsport 5, Quantum Break, Killer Instinct, Project Spark, Crimson Dragon, Halo 5, Dead Rising 3, Sunset Overdrive, D4, LocoCycle, Kinect Sports Rivals, Zoo Tycon.

As you understand, this list will be updated periodically.

findings

What to choose? It's up to you to decide, and I've provided you with food for thought. If you want to know my opinion, then I would choose PS4. Why? If we talk about the price, then today both consoles cost about the same. But the possibility of reselling and buying used games from Microsoft is missing. In addition, the Xbox One console allows you to play the game offline for a maximum of 24 hours. Finally, we do not have a regional lock for PS4 in our country. For me, all these moments are very significant.

Microsoft has officially unveiled the Xbox One X, the new Xbox console that the company claims will be the most powerful gaming console to date.

The new console will go on sale on November 7 this year. The price of the new device remains a mystery for now, but we already know the internal specs that are vastly superior to the existing Xbox One S console.

In our review, we will tell you about the differences between the two consoles, and perhaps you will decide on the choice of purchase for the coming Christmas.

Xbox One X vs Xbox One S: Graphics

Xbox One X vs Xbox One S: Comparison of Two Consoles

One of the key differences between the two consoles is the graphics hardware and the ability to stream full 4K images.

The Xbox One S console is capable of running at 1080 pixels at 60 frames per second (in games such as Forza Horizon 3). Not all games can achieve such high performance, but 12 Graphics Core Next (GCN) compute units with a clock speed of 914MHz can reach these figures. Also, the console is capable of upscaling video output to 4K for compatible TVs, but, by default, games do not go to Ultra HD.

On the other hand, the Xbox One X console will be able to display in full 4K at 60 frames per second thanks to the new GPU, which consists of 40 compute units clocked at 1.172GHz. This is a much more powerful GPU than any other device available today.

Also, the new console will be compatible with games that support HDR (High Dynamic Range). The Xbox One S already has this feature.

Xbox One X vs Xbox One S: CPU and Memory

Just like in the graphics situation, the CPU of the Xbox One X console is much more powerful than the Xbox One S. The Xbox One X processor has eight x86 cores with a clock speed of 2.3GHz. The Xbox One S console also has eight cores, which, however, run at a clock speed of 1.75GHz.

Improvements have also been made to RAM. The Xbox One X console has 12GB of GDDR5 RAM with a throughput of up to 326GB/s. In turn, the Xbox One S has 8 GB of DDR3 RAM and 32 MB of ESRAM memory with a bandwidth of 68Gb / s and 219Gb / s, respectively.

As a result, developers have been able to achieve improved memory and processor speeds for the Xbox One X console.

Xbox One X vs Xbox One S: Games

The great news for Xbox One S owners is that, for now, Microsoft has agreed that the games for the Xbox One S and Xbox One X consoles will be the same (plus the original Xbox One console is included) . This means that the game you purchase will be compatible with all three consoles, albeit at different levels of performance.

Thus, the One X version of the game will be much better in terms of graphics than the Xbox One S version - with higher resolution, draw distance, and the like. At the same time, the gameplay technically remains identical.

The same is true for the PS4 Pro. All PlayStation 4 games are compatible with Pro and standard PS4, they just look better on PS4 Pro, that's all.

Xbox One S went on sale in many countries. The updated console has not yet reached us, but the company promises that we will definitely wait for it in August, so the question is whether it is worth changing your time-tested to fashionable Xbox One S- it is the matter of time.

We decided not to wait for the release of our set-top box, and tell you in advance about the main differences between the old console and its new version. We hope that after this it will be much easier for you to decide on this difficult choice regarding the console: to change or not to change?

1. Xbox One S is white, redesigned and much smaller than usual

Design is, of course, a matter of taste, but it seems to us that it is quite difficult to deny the fact that the Xbox One S looks much nicer and neater than the original Xbox One. In addition, it is 40% more compact, which only adds points to it in terms of visual perception. Although you, of course, have long been accustomed to your black brick over the years.

2. White updated gamepad

The controller for Xbox One S is not some kind of fundamentally new device, but rather a small upgrade of an already existing convenient gamepad. Compared to the Xbox One controller, it has a useful function to connect to a PC via Bluetooth, as well as more comfortable grooved rubberized grips. In addition, he had increased the range of wireless modules. In general, everything is the same, but a little better.

3. Xbox One S does not need a separate power supply

This is perhaps one of the really nice and important pluses of the new console. Now you will not need to connect any additional devices to power the console and hide the wires, being afraid to trip over them and drop the console. Yes, and it’s just more beautiful, since we’re talking about aesthetics - then who wants to get a cute little prefix complete with a brick for charging, which you can’t do without?

4. Games will look a little better

And this is the most important and serious difference between the original console and the Xbox One S, at least for gamers. Thanks to the new console's support for HDR (High Dynamic Range Imaging) technology, new games, like , will look a little better on it than on regular Xbox One. And although we are not talking about any significant difference, the bonus is still nice.

But watching movies or TV programs on the new console can become much more enjoyable due to the added support for 4K resolution. Let's be honest, not many of us have the appropriate TVs, but over time they will become more affordable, and if you have already purchased one for yourself, then it makes sense for you to replace your old set-top box with an Xbox One S.

5. The new Xbox One S won't have a built-in Kinect port

And here is a fly in the ointment in a barrel of honey. True, only if you used Kinect at all. Of course, the camera can still be connected to your set-top box, but now you need a special adapter, which is sold separately.

In principle, such a move from Microsoft was quite expected, because they have long removed the Kinect from the base Xbox One. But for some, this news will still remain rather unpleasant.

In summary, we can say that there was no particular need to replace your console with the release of Xbox One S. In general, this is still the same Xbox, just a little more convenient, beautiful and functional, but without radical improvements. In any case, when exactly the prefix will appear in Russia is still unknown, as well as there is no information about its price. In the US, the console is currently selling for $399 for the 2TB version.
