A decree of the Government of the Russian Federation in 2006 approved control deadlines for sending written correspondence. According to the document, the delivery time of letters and parcels between settlements, as well as within their boundaries, is strictly regulated. Russian Post, being a national postal operator, is responsible for meeting deadlines.

The sender fills out a special form in two copies, where he lists the items or documents being sent, their quantity and declared value. Declared value is the amount that the sender will be able to receive if the registered item is lost or damaged.

The letter is handed over to the postal employee open and sealed after comparing the inventory and contents. One copy of the inventory remains with the sender. The addressee can open such a mail item in the presence of postal workers and check it against the inventory.

If it turns out that the correspondence was not received in full, the post office employee draws up a report. The report is sent to the main post office of the locality, on the basis of which an investigation is carried out within up to two months. How long does it take for a letter to arrive by Russian Post - how to calculate the delivery time for a letter

Even those whose whole life today is connected with the Internet and electronic correspondence cannot do without traditional postal services. After all, it is impossible to send original documents on paper in any other way, nor is it possible to send a message to relatives who have not yet made friends with the World Wide Web in any other way. And there are many more such examples - it’s impossible to list them all. Accordingly, the first question is: how long does it take for a letter to arrive by mail in Russia? How to calculate the deadline for receiving a letter by the addressee? After all, a beautiful card is important just for the holiday, and not in a week or two!

Therefore, let’s try to figure out together how long a letter is sent by Russian Post within the city, and how long between districts within the Russian Federation.

Delivery deadlines and whether they are strictly observed

It should be noted right away that today there are control dates approved for transfers by mail. They mean the time period that was required to move the postal item between the post office that accepted the letter to the office that should issue it to the recipient.

You can focus on these deadlines, but take into account that they may well be increased. For example, to calculate how many days a letter travels by mail in Russia is necessary without the day the post office receives this item from the sender.

Free legal advice:

Now about specific target dates that will help you calculate the minimum amount of time it takes for a 1st class letter to arrive by Russian Post. The Decree of the Government of the Russian Federation dated March 24, 2006 states that:

  • for intracity delivery in federal cities, 2 days are allotted;
  • 2 days are also provided for the transmission of correspondence between the administrative center and the districts on its territory;
  • for the transfer of items between the administrative center of the municipality and the villages in the territories of its districts, at least 3 days are required;
  • for the transfer of postal correspondence between those settlements that belong to different municipalities, the control deadline for the transfer of items is calculated by summing up the individual, corresponding deadlines.

From here, if you need to calculate how long it takes for a letter to travel in Moscow by Russian Post, then you should take: 1 day of departure plus 2 working days of transfer between post offices and plus a day for delivery to the address. This turns out to be a minimum of 4 calendar days (provided that this period does not fall on an official holiday).

First class refers to expedited domestic shipments, therefore, when calculating how long it takes for an urgent letter to arrive by mail in Russia, the deadlines listed above are adhered to.

How much cheaper is it to send a letter first class?

In fact, the delivery speed of such an item is higher than a regular shipment, since the sorting of correspondence is accelerated (it is done directly at the post office, and not at a sorting unit). In addition, it occurs only through air travel. However, how long it takes for a letter to travel by express mail in Russia can be affected by various factors (force majeure caused by natural disasters or the number of collection points), but one thing is for sure that first class mail deliveries are approximately 30% faster, than “simple” letters reach.

The main flow of letters sent throughout Russia is sent through the national postal operator - Russian Post. The relatively low cost of sending and additional services, the presence of a wide extensive network of post offices and an acceptable delivery time make Russian Post an almost complete monopolist in this area. Courier services and transport companies account for no more than 30% of written correspondence shipments.

In addition to price, one of the main points that worries a potential sender is the question: how many days does it take for a letter to arrive by mail? It is impossible to answer this question unequivocally. The actual (real) delivery time, due to many reasons, may differ from the target period regulated by a decree of the Russian government. However, Russian Post is responsible for compliance with the government-approved standard, and if the post office fails to fulfill its obligations, the client has the right to receive compensation.

Deadline for letter delivery

According to the standard, the duration of sending written correspondence is:

  • within the intracity territory of federal cities and administrative centers of constituent entities of the Russian Federation: 2 days*
  • between the administrative center of a subject and the center of a municipal district located on the territory of this subject: 2 days*
  • between the center of the municipality and settlements located on its territory – 3 days*.

*The day of acceptance of the shipment and weekends are not taken into account.

You can find out how long it takes for a letter to travel between the administrative centers of the constituent entities of the Russian Federation from the table below (to enlarge the picture, click on it):

The above forwarding standard applies to all types of written correspondence. That is, a simple (regular) letter will take the same amount of time to be delivered as a registered or valuable letter.

If you need urgent delivery, send a letter by 1st class or EMS courier service. The first method involves expedited delivery by air. 1st class will indeed shorten the transit time provided there are direct flights between cities. If you send correspondence by 1st class within the territory of one city, the delivery time will most likely be the same as with the usual method.

Remember, the actual transit time of a shipment may sometimes differ from that stated in the standard. Therefore, try to send letters in advance.
