Packaging and equipment

Zalman Z9 NEO Plus comes in a simple cardboard box with a sketch of the case on the front side, the model name and a list of its features at the bottom.

The packaging inside a cardboard box is also quite typical: two foam inserts fix the case, which is additionally sealed in a plastic bag.

The Zalman Z9 NEO Plus package includes five plastic ties, a set of screws and bushings, a speaker, and a quick guide.

Just like any other budget building.

Case production country - China, warranty - 2 years. Zalman Z9 NEO Plus cannot be called a novelty - it is an update of a model that has been produced in one form or another since the spring of 2016. The predecessor of the Plus modification - Z9 NEO - is available in most retail stores at a price of 3,500 rubles. That is the most that neither is the middle class.

⇡ D design and dimensions

Zalman Z9 NEO Plus looks pretty conservative. There are no bright eye-catching details, lacquered surfaces or chrome inserts in its design. Everything is very simple and even standard for MidiTower cases. However, see for yourself - perhaps you will have a different opinion.

From the materials used in the case 0.6 mm steel and ABS plastic. Zalman Z9 NEO Plus is 490mm high, 482mm long and 205mm wide. The device weighs only 6.7 kilograms.

If you look at the case from the front, then its left panel is entirely made of matte transparent plastic and is mounted on four knurled screws, and the right one is made of metal and is completely deaf.

The slits above and to the left of it are more decorative, since no air flow through them is felt.

The solid front panel of the case has a barely noticeable textured pattern, reminiscent of rough polishing. It opens, and a metal dust filter is visible behind it, followed immediately by fans. Where do they get air from? But who knows from where, but certainly not from narrow side slots.

The top bezel can be removed to increase airflow out of the case from the top fans.

The bottom dust filter is also removed. True, it slides back, which, as you understand, is inconvenient.

The body rests on four 23 mm high legs with oval rubber feet.

On top of the front panel of the Zalman Z9 NEO Plus, there is a backlit power button, a Reset button, two USB 3.0 connectors and the same number of USB 2.0 connectors - all four are covered with rubber caps, as well as microphone and headphone jacks.

In general, the build quality of the case and the materials used in it is not bad, although the difference with higher-end products cannot be overlooked. But the price here is different, of course.

Internal structure

The front panel of the case is hinged and held closed by magnets. Underneath is a plastic grille and two 5.25-inch bay covers.

A two-millimeter soundproofing is glued on the door itself. There is practically no gap between the door and the ventilation grille.

The entire front panel is fixed on plastic latches with latches. If you remove it, you can see a metal dust filter and disposable plugs for five-inch bays.

The top panel also rests on the same plastic clips. Having removed it, you can see a metal chassis with a frame on which two 120-mm fans are fixed, oriented with blowing impellers.

Let's look at Zalman Z9 NEO Plus without side panels.

The main working area of the case looks spacious, with easy access to any part. It can accommodate Mini ITX, Micro ATX and ATX form factor motherboards. Larger E-ATXs will also fit, but they will block the holes for cables that will have to be routed in some other way. There is also a window in the pallet for installing or removing a processor cooler without dismantling the motherboard from the case.

On the front, at the top of the case, there are two bays for 5.25-inch devices.

Both baskets are removable, they can be easily dismantled from the body and, if desired, not returned back.

For 3.5-inch drives, the case also has two bays, this time with removable plastic sleds.

They can also install 2.5-inch form factor drives, and there are two more seats for drives of this format on the vertical partition of the case.

Thus, the total number of 2.5-inch drives in the Zalman Z9 NEO Plus can reach four. What's more, 5.25-inch drive bays can accommodate two 3.5-inch drives or two 2.5-inch drives.

The case is designed to install power supplies up to 200 mm long. The PSU is fixed in the standard way - with screws to the back wall.

The power supply is installed with the fan facing down to draw in fresh air through the built-in dust filter.

As for video cards, the length of the case can even accommodate 400 mm models, and the general configuration can be seen in the following diagram.

The number of slots for expansion cards in the case is standard - seven. The slots are covered with mesh strips, which are secured with plastic-sheathed knurled screws.

At the end of the internal inspection of the Zalman Z9 NEO Plus, we note the presence of five holes for laying cables with rubber plugs, as well as a large number of ordinary holes and metal jumpers for laying cable ties.

Cooling system and equipment options

Zalman Z9 NEO Plus is equipped with five 120mm fans at once. Two fans are installed on the front wall and blow into the case.

In turn, two more 120-mm fans are installed on the top wall of the case, and one on the back. This trinity works on blowing out of the case.

Thus, the air flow pattern in Zalman Z9 NEO Plus should be something like this.

True, we have some doubts about the efficiency of the front fans due to their proximity to the blank front cover ...

All fans are based on sleeve bearings and their speed is constant at 1200 rpm. The rear fans differ from the front ones in a transparent housing and impeller, as well as the presence of backlighting.

There is no fan speed control in Zalman Z9 NEO Plus, and the fans are connected via a serial connection of five PATA-type connectors, which are then connected to the power supply.

We add that liquid cooling systems with radiators up to 240 × 120 mm in size can be installed in this case on the front or top wall, if the total thickness of the cooling system does not exceed 55 mm.

Assembly

In principle, the process of assembling components in Zalman Z9 NEO Plus does not differ from assembly in other cases, and there are no unique features here as a class. 3.5-inch drives are installed in plastic baskets with rubber holders, and this is done without screws at all.

2.5-inch drives are installed on the partition of the case or somewhere else. It remains only to place the power supply and connect everything with cables.

In the upper part, the case is still cramped, and if you install a coolant cooler with fans there, then the additional power cables will not be connected to the motherboard at all. However, for mid-range configurations, the Zalman Z9 NEO Plus may well be the way to go. However, we even managed to place in it such a supercooler as Phanteks PH-TC14PЕ, although its height exceeds the passport for Zalman 160 mm.

Of course, the transparent side cover rested against the fans of the supercooler, but, having bent a little under the pressure of the screws, it still covered the system unit. Assembled and working Zalman Z9 NEO Plus looks quite modern and interesting, despite the most ordinary forms and simple materials.

During the day, and especially at night, the attention of guests and friends is sure to be attracted by the illumination of the fans, which are visible through the transparent side panel of the case.

Greetings dear readers! I decided to describe in detail the assembly of another system unit, because all the hardware seems to be fresh and I don’t want the embodiment of my work to stupidly sink into oblivion of such works. I would like this worthless writing to serve as someone either a guide or help in choosing, in general, think for yourself how it will serve someone there.

So.
Everything was fine and nothing foreshadowed trouble, if not for the quick departure of one adult foal to study in the mean and warm western regions. The task was clearly or vaguely set for a good machine for study and entertainment with a maximum service life without upgrading the kit for moderate money.

I will immediately make a reservation here that I did not solve the problem formally, but with conscience, a little knowledge of the matter and a treacherously good mood. When the components were chosen, all this fought hard in me and did not allow me to concentrate. But it's all true, lyrics.

Here is what was chosen, as a result, in the CSN on Semenovskaya in the glorious, peculiar, large and smelly village of Vlyadivostok:

  • Case Zalman Z9 Plus
  • Mamo GA Z77X-UD5H rev. 1.1
  • Video Palit GTX6600 with non-reference cooling
  • Persessor Core i7 3.4Ghz one of the latest not "K" under LGA1155
  • Cooler with a heatsink on the CPU - Zalman Performa
  • HDD WD Black 1TB la-la-FAEX 64MB cache
  • Memory Corsair XMS3 2x4GB 1600/9-9-9-24/1.65v
  • Corsair CXM600 power supply
  • Laser drive Lite-On It IHAS-120-la-la-la

Well, let's get started... no assembly. First, let's carefully study what crap they bought and how right pick up. This is necessary, Dear, at least in order not to cut the obliques during assembly, because the pieces of iron are unusual, with their own pitfalls. Therefore, we move carefully without sudden movements and excessive efforts, and maybe it won’t bite =).

Let's unpack and spread out the junk and look at the instructions for the installation:

We take out the body, look at it in every way and pull off the covers, as well as the muzzle.

After studying the instructions, it was found out that it turns out that there are three modifications of the Z9 cases, and bought, say, not the most oak. Ours, unlike the others, has a socket at the top for monitoring the temperature inside the case by the sensor, adjusting the fan speed and 4 USB 2.0 ports and a front microphone output with ears. And the muzzle itself is slightly different in the place of the air intake from below.

Inside the case, there is a standard, already, mounting scheme for devices 5.25 and 3.5 - the basket for hard drives is deployed across and non-removable, and for drives and other similar crap, everything is as usual.

What pleased me during the assembly was:

  • Thoughtful placement of wiring and its fasteners
  • Competent calculation of the placement of elements
  • A turnkey solution for mounting an SSD without inventing any
  • Large supply of ventilation in the case
  • Simple and not intricate, but very reliable fastening of components, without newfangled worthless and useless plastic show-offs.

The snot, of course, was immediately shifted, taking into account the minimum disheveledness along the body, and the assembly began.

Knowing about the negligence of mounting strong coolers, attention was immediately drawn to the installation of the cooler on the mother. As expected, it just didn't work. I had to study the instructions, which, it should be noted, are nakalyakana, only in foreign countries. The letters seem to be all familiar, so there were no questions and after fifteen minutes everything was very clear, but alas, not easy. This seems to be a price to pay for unification and compatibility with all common sockets.

It should be noted that the screws for different platforms are different, Silver with a fine thread pitch approached me under 1155. The hexagon is long for tightening screws and the mount itself, in principle, makes it not so difficult to fix everything, but it will not be superfluous to study the instructions until you understand. The thermal paste in the kit is fashionable somehow, it doesn’t really stick to metal parts and rolls off when smeared. As a result, it was not so easy to apply it, smearing it over the entire surface of the processor. It looks like it’s not fashionable to apply the paste like that, now it’s stupidly squeezed out in the center of the processor and clamped with a radiator, not caring whether the entire surface is under the spot contact or not. I have problems with this, so it's better to check once and calm down.

Next, we put the motherboard bar on the rear terminals and fasten the mother itself: we twist the missing pegs, we apply the mother and attract them with screws, centering the location along two holes in the area where the off-board video card and expansion cards are attached. This is done so that there is no skew when attaching these same boards later.

Immediately, without delaying it for later, we quell the memory, as the great manual bequeathed (such a book, it comes with a mother), into the extreme slots of the channels.

We connect the snot of the front panel. Everything is signed and clear, few manufacturers of mothers do this. It is worth paying attention to the color of the wires. If everything is extremely signed on the mother - where is the plus, where is the minus, then everything is not quite simple with the wires. There is an unspoken rule followed by all case manufacturers. So:

If two wires are together and one of them is red and the second is black, then red is always a plus, and black is a minus or “ground” ground as it is also called.

If two wires do not fall into the first rule and have an excellent color, then there is always a white wire among them. It is just a minus, and any color is a plus.

We hang the power supply. Fastening standard on 4 screws, sits tightly without problems. Do not forget to start all the screws first, then move the block a little and only then tighten it so that there is no distortion in the mount. And then there were cases when, when skewed, the fan began to cling to the grill and rattle.

We turn off the main power supply. The 8-pin processor power cable is very long and is made in a row with soldered wires, which saves the space it occupies. The mother's power supply is implemented as usual in a braid, it is also disconnected with a bend in the conductors.

When installing the video card, there were no problems, everything is as usual. The main thing is not to forget to give her power - here is a 6-pin one.

Hard drives are mounted on damping rubber bands, which is important for noisy WD Black screws la-la-la. To prevent the screw from coming loose during transportation, the HDD is additionally fastened with a special screw by hand, according to the instructions. (It's hard to see in the third photo).

The laser drive is easily fastened with run-in screws, also by hand, of which there are enough in the kit.

After that, the power supply of internal peripherals, such as HDD and DVD-RW, as well as the fan control panel, was connected.

Included with the mother was a USB 3.0 bracket for output to the front muzzle instead of a floppy drive panel with a standardized connector for the mother. Ess-but it would be a sin not to attach and connect it. By the way, on this mother there are already three USB 3.0 outputs on the mother inside.

It came to interface loops. An old way to save space and avoid tangled wires is to wind the cable around a pencil or pen. Data transfer does not worsen, but technologically creepy.

Just the finishing touches left.

Attention! Do not forget when landing the muzzle in place, remove the ends of the connection of the "POWER" button and its backlight and connect them.

We sit the muzzle in place, gently, without excessive effort. If it doesn’t go somewhere, you need to correct it and plant it correctly.

Once again, we check after ourselves whether everything is connected correctly and fixed so that nothing is rubbed anywhere during operation and rotation of the fans. If the snot hangs and dangles, be sure to take them on the ties, or push them so that they do not dangle. This, of course, can not be done, but if the system unit is planned to be transported, then it is quite possible that all the snot will pop out and stick anywhere.

If everything is smooth, we try to start the car. Everything turned out well for me, but there is one small BUT. Her mother, her mother, refused to control the ZALMAN ZM-F3 fan normally, which infuriated her a little. How many years have motherboards been stamped, and control of the speed of rotation of connected fans has not yet been brought to the standard. You might think that everything is so complicated and impossible there. This circumstance could have been overlooked by the demon, but the cost of my mother took a bite. For her, after all, it was possible to do everything according to the mind for such babos?

As a result, I had to dismantle the 0.35 ampere fan and install a 0.16 ampere one so as not to hum. Alas, the speed control did not happen, although everything is tracked correctly in Beavis, but nothing reacts to changing the settings. The only mothers where I have never encountered problems with controlling the rotation speed of the connected fans are the INTEL mothers of the DH61-XX series on green textolite, but they are beyond the scope of this story.

After these manipulations, I got a completely quiet and nimble system, and, as Dmitry Puchkov says, “this cannot but rejoice.”

We have tried to make the description as good as possible so that your choice is unmistakable and conscious, but since we may not have exploited this product, but only felt it from all sides, and after you buy it, try it in work, your feedback can make this world a better place, if your feedback is really useful, then we will publish it and give it you the opportunity to make the next purchase with us on the 2nd column.

ZALMAN Z series Z9 NEO — Great case, very roomy, good cooling system out of the box

5 Elizarov Evgeny Anatolievich 13-09-2017

Opinion of a potential buyer
Advantages:
Very roomy, a large number of complete fans, the lower location of the power supply and the box covering it, which gives a plus to aesthetics. It is convenient to organize cable management, there are many eyelets in the right places and rubber plugs. It is possible to install a dual-fan CBO, which makes this case even more attractive, especially for gaming solutions. If desired, you can remove the mounts for drives.
Flaws:
Standard ATX motherboard covers 2 holes for wires. If you want to reduce the noise, you have to tinker, but a little. Fans out of the box can be strongly attracted to the case and, because of this, make more noise than we would like. The simple solution is to unscrew and screw on the noisy fan again. In most cases, it helps to reduce noise. And if you are not too lazy to put vibration-absorbing pads - everything will be chocolate.

ZALMAN Z series Z9- Delight!!! more and unnecessary

5 Gutsalenko Stepan Vyaeslavovich 05-08-2017

Owner rating: ZALMAN Z series Z9
Advantages:
the ventilation is excellent, there is a lot of space inside, the quality of the material is at the ZALMAN level, this inspires respect for the manufacturer, a lot of little things related to cleanliness are thought out, three years ago I bought myself exactly the same block, and so he made me happy that the next time I assembled the next car, the choice of block was obvious, there is nothing superfluous and there is everything you need
Flaws:
I have not been found!

1) Excellent purge; 2) Ability to install 5 coolers; 3) Informative and convenient front panel; 4) Looks solid, even plastic elements look like metal.
Flaws:
1) Mediocre management of wires "out of the box"; 2) The wire plugs are not very high quality, but this does not interfere with business :)

ZALMAN Z series Z9 U3 — Effective and comfortable

5 Oleg 28-01-2016

Owner rating: ZALMAN Z series Z9 U3
Advantages:
Looks very dignified, the quality is at the level - both outside and inside. Pretty quiet even with stock fans. Buttons and sockets are well located - dust does not settle and does not clog. When assembling, the hands are not cut - the edges are processed and painted.
Flaws:
Little things at the level of nit-picking - nothing had to be checked, sharpened and soldered

ZALMAN Z series Z9 U3 — great case for a great price

5 Stakhovich Alexander Anatolievich 26-09-2015

Owner rating: ZALMAN Z series Z9 U3
Advantages:
It's been about 2 months since I bought it. Firstly, I liked the delivery through Major Express. Now to the point. The case is very quiet, the blue light from the backlight of the fans does not interfere at all at night, the appearance of the case is on top. Someone complained that the knock-out plugs in the case cannot be closed at the back, and so everything is perfectly closed with the plugs from the kit, the cable management is very convenient and thoughtful. The edges of the case are machined, it is unrealistic to cut yourself during assembly. The dust filter on the front side deserves all praise, its only dismantling for cleaning is a little difficult (you have to remove the front panel every time), but this is more of a nitpick.
Flaws:
During the operation did not notice.

ZALMAN Z series Z9 U3 — Excellent body!

February 10, 2012 Choosing a chassis is an important part of buying a new computer. The budget for this business for many of us will be no more than 3,000 rubles. Important features: appearance, cooling, noise reduction. So, the Zalman z9+ corps truly has all these...

The Korean company Zalman is a well-known manufacturer of computer components in the world market. Founded in 1999, it is primarily dedicated to the development and production of various cooling systems, focusing on quietness and convenience. And although until recently, Zalman practically did not develop its presence in the segment of computer cases, this did not prevent it from mastering a new direction in a short time. Let the assortment cannot boast of a variety of models, but all of them definitely deserve attention.

At one time, with the release of the TNN series heavyweight case (with completely passive cooling of the “iron filling”), Zalman proved that it can really create unique and quiet solutions. And the subsequent representatives of the Z-Machine line have long been for me the standard of the right gaming case.

Last summer, overclockers.ru readers got acquainted with one of the company's top models - Zalman GS1200, which left a very pleasant impression after testing. Now we will talk about the budget solution of the same manufacturer - Zalman Z9 Plus, the “tower” of the Midi Tower form factor. The case is positioned as a gaming solution, but it has a number of useful "gadgets".

Let's start the review of Zalman Z9 Plus, as usual, by examining the packaging of the case and the accessories that come with it.

Packaging and equipment

The box in which the manufacturer placed the Zalman Z9 Plus has quite impressive dimensions. Its dimensions are 510 x 280 x 570 mm (L x W x H). Weight - 8.4 kg. The color of the package is made in a "cardboard" color scheme, with a black fill present in the lower part. The case itself is displayed on the front side, the manufacturer and model are indicated.

The sides of the package are equipped with carrying handles. However, these are more likely not even handles, but just holes made. But in any case, moving the box with their help does not cause much difficulty.

Brief information regarding the main technical characteristics of the case is displayed on the side in eight languages, including Russian. On this, perhaps, all useful information is exhausted.

Inside the box, the case is packed in transparent polyethylene and sandwiched between two foam dampers-clamps that protect it from mechanical damage. The location of the product in the box is with the front panel up.

Accessories are placed in a transparent plastic bag. It sits inside the case, clipped onto the hard drive cage.

The package is made of rather thick polyethylene and opens with a special zipper. The manufacturer's attention to detail and convenience is worthy of respect.

Inside, you can find several more nested bags that housed various mounting hardware, rubber anti-vibration pads for hard drives, a 12V power cord extension, and a user manual in English and Korean. Russian language, unfortunately, is missing. But the instruction is illustrated in great detail and it will not be difficult to figure out “what and where”.

Separately, I would like to pay attention to the eight-pin extension cable for the twelve-volt power supply wire (ATX 12V). Its length is 345 mm, it is enclosed in a black plastic braid. In some cases, it's irreplaceable. Often a problem can arise when the length of the power supply wires is too short, it does not allow laying the 12 V “cord” behind the motherboard tray (if there is a cable management system in the case). In this case, a similar extension adapter will help out.

As you can see, the equipment does not shine with sophistication, but everything you need is present. See below for a list of accessories that come with the case. The kit includes:

  • A bag with a set of screws and anti-vibration pads for mounting hard drives;
  • A bag with a set of screws for fixing the motherboard and expansion devices;
  • Bag of twelve screws securing 5.25" knurled devices;
  • Adapter-extension wire 12 V power supply 345 mm long;
  • User manual in English and Korean.

Appearance and design

Design Zalman Z9 Plus - quite a typical "medium tower" (form factor ATX Middle Tower), its dimensions: 504 x 207 x 464 mm (L x W x H). The case weighs impressively for its size - 7.2 kilograms. But this can only be attributed to the pluses, since the increased mass allows you to better dampen vibration. Externally, the Z9 Plus looks a bit bulky.

The chassis of the case, as well as the side panels, are made of steel with a thickness of 0.8 mm. All edges are carefully rolled, it is almost impossible to cut yourself when assembling a computer. The front and top panels are trimmed with fairly high-quality decorative plastic.

The Zalman Z9 Plus only comes in one color option - black. Outside, it is painted with black matte paint, rough to the touch.

The Z9 model with the “Plus” suffix differs from the “usual” one by a transparent, slightly curved outward window in the main case door, in the middle of which there is a relatively large ventilation grill. Hole diameter - 5.5 mm. There is no protection against dust here, which is fraught with its rapid accumulation inside the case if the room is dusty.

The other side is completely deaf and does not stand out in any way. Both doors are held by special grooves in the chassis of the case, they are additionally screwed from the end with screws with a plastic knurled head, two pieces per side. To facilitate the removal of the panels, there is a notch in their rear part.
