I noticed this lot quite by accident while scouring the vastness of aliexpress.
After reading the instructions for it and understanding why it was needed, I decided to order)
I was so excited about the idea of ​​owning such a thing that I didn’t even look at the seller’s rating. After payment, I remembered this and was very scared) After all, his rating was almost zero. But as it turned out, I had no need to worry!!!

Let's start with what this product is intended for.
This product combines both a memory card and a small Wi-Fi transmitter. After inserting a small MicroSD memory card into this adapter and installing it in the camera, when the latter is turned on, a Wi-Fi network is created. Next, we connect to it (the network with the password 88888888) and on any mobile device we either go to the manufacturer’s website or, after downloading a special program, we observe all the photos taken from the camera on the screen of your mobile device.

The parcel arrived just with lightning speed) Only 11 days. At the moment, this is a record for me. The parcel itself is a yellow bag with a bubble wrap inside.

The product packaging was perfect. Nothing was wrinkled anywhere. The packaging is made in the style of a book. The top is quite thick cardboard and the inside is plastic.

I checked only one - the AppStore, since I don’t have Android devices at home) The code works, although the application is only available to users of the Chinese AppStore. But it doesn’t matter) I found a very convenient application in the Russian AppStore, but more on it later)

Connectivity and functionality

In its appearance and size, the new product is no different from a regular SD card. But the device is also equipped with a Wi-Fi module, which is useful for sending pictures and controlling it from a smartphone or tablet.

Before you start, you need to install the free Wi-Fi SD application, which can be downloaded from the AppStore or Play Market, as well as the Amazon appstore. It helps connect and control the functions of the memory card. The mobile application can be installed on devices running Android version 2.2 and higher, as well as on iPhone, iPad, iPod Touch.

Wi-Fi SD can operate in several modes. The connection setup is described in detail in the Quick Start Guide.

To directly connect to a mobile device, you need to connect the memory card to the camera and turn on the camera, then go to Wi-Fi connections on your smartphone or tablet and find the WIFISD network there and connect using the password from the user manual. And then launch the application on your mobile device to view and manage memory.

The program is as easy as possible to use. The first point will help you view the footage and save the necessary files in the smartphone’s memory. The “Shoot and See” item allows you to take a photo on the camera and view it on the tablet display, for example.

In addition, the Wi-Fi SD card can operate in the following modes: Internet connection, in which a mobile device controls the memory card via a Wi-Fi router, connections through a smartphone’s mobile hotspot, as well as connections to a laptop or computer with a wireless communication module. In the latter case, the user accesses the memory card through a browser.

For quick setup, as well as resetting the SD card settings, you just need to delete the required file from memory, so the user can almost immediately use all the capabilities of Wi-Fi SD.

As can be seen from the table, the buyer has a choice of two memory card sizes: 16 and 32 GB. Judging by the specifications, there are no differences between them other than volume. Note that the drive supports data transfer over a Wi-Fi network of b, g or n standards, as well as three types of encryption - WEP, WPA and WPA2.

Appearance and packaging

The Transcend Wi-Fi SD Card model comes in a rather large package, which clearly does not correspond to its size, which is due to the very extensive package. On the back side, in addition to the name of the device, there is an indication of the speed class (Class 10) and the presence of a card reader in the kit. The advantages of this memory card are also listed: the ability to post photos online, send them to different devices and the presence of a special application for Android and iOS.

The back of the package contains a specification table, a list of the scope of delivery, as well as a small list of instructions in Russian. The device itself is made in Taiwan.

The equipment of the new product corresponds to the high class of the device. In addition to the card itself, which is in a protective plastic box, there are:

  • card reader with USB 2.0 interface;

  • warranty booklet.

Of course, a nice bonus is the included card reader, which we will talk about a little later.

Externally, the Transcend Wi-Fi SD Card model has a look familiar to similar devices. The blue plastic of the case is complemented by a predominantly white and blue sticker indicating the name of the manufacturer, the volume of the device, the class of information recording and the method of wireless data transfer. There is a key on the side that allows you to block the ability to write information to the memory card.

The included card reader has a nice design, although the glossy coating itself cannot be called practical.

In addition to a slot for an SD memory card, there is also a slot for microSD cards, which makes this device more versatile. Data transfer is carried out using the USB 2.0 interface.

By default, the new product being tested is formatted in the FAT32 file system, with 30.2 GB available to the user. The discrepancy with the previously stated 32 GB is due to the decimal conversion of memory units used by drive manufacturers.

Connection

As we have already mentioned, the purpose of creating a memory card of this type is to make it possible to transfer content from the camera to a compatible device via a Wi-Fi channel.

To start using it, you should install the drive in your digital camera and turn it on. The card is activated automatically. Further actions depend on the specific device from which you are going to access the memory card.

In the case of solutions based on the Android and iOS operating systems, you should download the necessary Wi-Fi SD utility from the corresponding stores (Google Play Store or iOS App Store), which is easiest to find using the search bar.

After launching the Wi-Fi SD program, a simple and intuitive interface opens in front of us, so even an inexperienced user without knowledge of English will find it easy to understand.

The memory card is managed using the “Settings” menu, which contains six sections, which we will consider in more detail.

The first item present here - “Switch Connection Mode” - allows you to select one of two data transfer modes: direct transfer mode, active by default (Direct Share), and transfer mode via an access point (Internet Mode), which allows you to upload photos to the network.

The next section of the menu - “Wi-Fi Options” - allows you to turn off the Wi-Fi signal of the SD card transmitter, select the default connection mode, and also set the time after which the card will automatically switch to power saving mode.

The “Direct Share Settings” item provides the ability to change the connection settings to the SD card: connection name (SSID) and password, as well as enable/disable the use of WPA2 encryption.

“Internet Mode Settings” implements the function of saving data about the access points used, which is very important if you often select a mode with the appropriate name.

The “Security Settings” section allows you to set a login and password to enter the program, ensuring reliable protection of the contents of the memory card from prying eyes.

A purely informational item - “Wi-Fi SD Information” - contains information about the full and free capacity of the drive, its MAC and IP addresses, as well as the software version.

The file viewing mode displays thumbnails of pictures. There is also the ability to save tagged photos to the device from which the memory card is accessed.

In addition, the Wi-Fi SD utility has a very interesting “Shoot&View” function, which allows you to view pictures on a smartphone or tablet immediately after taking them with the camera. The image taken with the camera can be examined in great detail and carefully on the same tablet, enlarging the desired part of the photo, after which you can immediately save it as a souvenir.

A list of cameras compatible with the Transcend Wi-Fi SD Card can be found here. Moreover, it is constantly expanding, and we were able to use the “Shoot and See” function even on the Samsung NX10 camera, which is not formally compatible with this memory card.

Despite the presence of a wireless data transfer module, the Transcend Wi-Fi SD Card showed results comparable to other representatives of this form factor. At the same time, I was pleasantly surprised by the recording speed, reaching 16.9 MB/s, which is a very good indicator. Let us remember that the Class 10 specified by the manufacturer assumes a write speed of at least 10 MB/s, and the result obtained turned out to be a record among the models we have already tested. In addition, short memory access times will minimize delays when copying small files. The Intel NAS PT utility shows us the speed indicators of the new product ranging from 15.6 to 20 MB/s, which, as you can see, is an excellent result in this class of devices.

We also tested the data transfer speed over the Wi-Fi wireless channel. In this mode, copying a 305 MB batch of photos took 10 minutes 15 seconds, so the average speed was about 0.5 MB/s. Of course, in comparison with data transfer via a card reader, this figure does not look so impressive, but in this case, one should take into account the compact dimensions of the device, as well as the uniqueness of the technology itself.

conclusions

The memory card is an excellent example of how innovation only improves the functionality of a device, even when it comes to such a compact solution. Frankly speaking, given the size of the new product, the presence of a Wi-Fi module seems a little fantastic. But after the first settings and file transfer, this feeling disappears.

In terms of performance, the tested Transcend Wi-Fi SD Card shows data read/write speeds comparable to devices of the same class, as well as short access times. Writing to the card, by the way, is only slightly slower than reading, which is not typical for many memory cards even with class 10 speed characteristics. In general, we have before us a worthy representative of the family of high-speed SD drives.

But the presence of a wireless module is a really useful thing, especially considering the ease of setup and use. At the same time, the data transfer speed is naturally lower, but the concept itself deserves praise, especially since it is quite functional.

The only thing you may not like is the price of the new product. So, while a regular SD Class 10 memory card costs less than $25, the model we tested will cost more than twice as much. On the other hand, the Wi-Fi module in the new product is unique in itself, and is certainly worth attention. Let's hope that over time, data transmission over a wireless channel will become faster and more accessible, but for now we rejoice at innovations in a segment that has long been familiar and, it would seem, incapable of surprising anything.

Constantly changing trends do not let you get bored, and if 10 years ago I could not imagine that wireless Internet would be in every microwave, mobile phones could to some extent replace computers, and Flash drives would not only gain greater capacity and small size , but they also have a place for a Wi-Fi module, then today this is a completely objective reality for many. Today we are looking at an amazing SD memory card from one of the leaders in this market - Transcend.


SD cards are quite large in comparison with microSD, while the latter are often used in various small electronics, for example, in smartphones, Wi-Fi routers, tablets and others, while ordinary large SD cards are still actively used in cameras. However, the issue of “transporting” photographs has remained unchanged until now. The chain of actions is familiar to everyone who takes photographs at least from time to time - take a photo, take out the flash drive, insert it into the computer, transfer the photos. The procedure is not very time-consuming, but, you see, it is not always convenient when the computer is not at hand, and you absolutely need to “pull” photos out of the camera.


This is where an SD card with a built-in Wi-Fi module will come in very handy. We'll talk about how it works a little lower, but for now let's look at the technical specifications.

Externally, a Wi-Fi SD Card is completely no different from a regular “Wi-Fi-free” card - the cards have an identical appearance, except that the advanced brother is distinguished by the presence of the “Wi-Fi” inscription on the front side of the case. Otherwise, the cards cannot be distinguished from each other.


As for the direct read/write characteristics, in this regard the Transcend card shows quite expected results - 8 MB/s for writing and almost 18 for reading. The card was tested on a MacBook Air late 2010 using the Blackmagic Disk Speed ​​Test utility with a stress of 5 GB.


However, the most interesting thing about this memory card is the ability to wirelessly transfer photos directly from the camera to your smartphone or tablet. To do this, you will need to download the application for iOS or Android, and then perform the initial setup of the card - change the standard password for the local Wi-Fi network being created and “friend” the card with your home network, this will be required in order to upload photos to social networks directly from applications. I was a little surprised that the setup process was very simple and did not take much time.

So, how can a flash card + application combination be useful? Firstly, the user can access the photos they have just taken without having to remove the memory card from the camera. The application has the ability to save pictures directly to the system photo gallery or directly to the application itself. Also no less interesting is the ability to see the photo you just took on the smartphone screen; this mode is called “Shoot and See.” You select this mode, take a photo, and after a few seconds it appears on the screen of your smartphone, where it can already be saved to memory and then loaded, say, into.


In addition, it is also possible to “connect” a flash drive with another Wi-Fi network in order to use the application to publish photos on social networks. True, domestic “VKontakte” and “Odnoklassniki” are not supported, you have to be content with “bourgeois” Twitter and Facebook, which in any case is better than nothing.


It is worth noting that due to higher power consumption compared to traditional SD cards, Transcend WiFi SD will not be compatible with all models of photo and video cameras. The list of supported devices is on the manufacturer’s official website; most cameras can be found there. Moreover, we even managed to use such a flash drive with a Sony HDR-CX440 video camera, although we could not play the video on the iPhone 5s, apparently due to the peculiarities of the format in which the camera shoots. Everything is fine with the photos.


Of course, the device is not without its drawbacks. Despite the fact that such a card turns out to be really convenient to use, it should be noted that using the wireless protocol the card will not be able to provide the same transmission speed as in the traditional way. “Over the air” you can count on a speed of 0.5-1 MB per second, which is noticeably less. We can consider this to be a kind of payment for the complete absence of wires and the need to remove the card to copy photos. The cost of such a flash drive with a Wi-Fi module on the market fluctuates around 3 thousand rubles for 32 GB of memory, which is on average twice as much as similar drives without a wireless communication module.

I have long been following the possibilities of connecting between a smartphone and a camera (without a computer between them)…

Some smartphone models have a USB host (where you can connect the camera in USB flash drive mode), but the range of such models is small, and in addition you have to carry a bulky cable and adapters.

For some reason, Bluetooth never came to cameras - as of 2013 there are only 4 models and they are either expensive DSLRs or point-and-shoot cameras. Moreover, in some reviews they write that for transmission via Bluetooth, the camera automatically repackages the photo in low quality. Although back in 2009 Bluetooth V3 was invented where the theoretical speed reaches 24 Mbit.

You can also rearrange the flash drive to transfer files. Use not standard SD in the camera, but microSD with an adapter to SD. In principle, most smartphones have the ability to change a flash drive. But this is usually slow: many flash drives are now placed inside and you need to remove the back cover (sometimes even the battery), and then the android starts scanning its old flash drive... Transferring several photos from the camera using this method ultimately takes about 10 minutes.

Wi-Fi. At first glance, there are already more than 100 models of cameras with WiFi today. However, these are either cheap point-and-shoot cameras (with prices of about 4 rubles - it’s easier to shoot directly with a smartphone), or already a class of DSLRs. And in the assortment of expensive non-mirror cameras (such as Panasonic FZ) there is no WiFi...

In 2008, SD cards with built-in WiFi access appeared - it was called Eye-Fi. However, they were small in size, they were expensive, and could only be purchased in online stores. Then SanDisk also began making such cards, but even today (2013) they have a maximum capacity of 8GB and Class 4 speed. In general, I didn’t want to sacrifice 16/32GB capacity for the occasional Wi-Fi connection. But now another SD Wi-Fi manufacturer has finally appeared - Transcend. Transcend has released SD Wi-Fi cards in 32GB and 16GB, both with Class 10 speeds.

So, I bought a Transcend SD 32Gb Wi-Fi memory card, and decided to write a short review about it because... There is quite a bit of information on the Internet and I thought about it for several days before purchasing.

Its physical dimensions are absolutely standard (there is a mention on the Internet that some competitors have similar flash drives that are 1-2mm longer - but this problem does not exist here).

I compared the speeds on my computer using a card reader:

At the same time, I note that this WiFi card gets very hot during operation. You can hold it with your hands, but it is noticeably hot. This fact is also noted on the Internet - this is clearly a common feature of Wi-Fi cards from Transcend. But ordinary SDHC cards are a little warm with the same amount of work.

The Transcend website says that you need to check the compatibility of the camera using the list and there is a very small list of compatible cameras. Of the Panasonic FZ (of which there are several dozen) there was only FZ100 for some reason...
However, a thorough study of Google revealed that, for example, WiFi-SD cards of certain competitors work in almost all cameras. The camera does not require any special support; for the camera it is a regular SD card and that’s it.
Cameras have problems mainly with power supply to such cards: some cameras do not provide enough power (and the card does not start or turns off when downloading files), some cameras provide power to the card only at the moment of recording frames to it (and the WiFi part does not have time to start working ).
If in the specifications of the camera (and you need to study the engineering specifications in English, in Russian they often don’t write anything other than megapixels) you can find support for the SDIO standard, then most likely the WiFi card will work normally.

I inserted the card into the Panasonic Lumix FZ28 (it is not on the official list). In general, the card worked in it!

Wi-Fi The Android dispatcher saw the “WIFISD” access point on the air. After turning on the camera, the map appears on the air in about half a minute. I didn’t find any new functions in the options of the camera itself. Connected to this WIFISD.

At the same time, I note some inconvenience - the smartphone is connected to only one Wi-Fi network at a time. Moreover, while at least some WiFi is active, 3G/GRPS is turned off (although the Android notifies that this access point does not have access to the Internet). So it’s impossible to be on the Internet and read photos from the camera at the same time (more precisely, you can by connecting the card through your home router to your home LAN, but IMHO this is an impractical scenario).

I looked through the instructions included. It doesn’t really say anything, only that software for smartphones is only available starting from iOS 5.0 and Android 2.2.
I found “Transcend Wi-Fi SD” in the market and installed it.

Moreover, the software simply simplifies the work. The map is also available for smartphone web browsers at http://192.168.11.254 and its web interface allows everything the same as the software.

So, in principle, you can download photos from the card not only to smartphones with iOS 5+ and Android 2.2+, but also to any other operating systems. In the instructions, the method with a web interface is documented in the context of laptops, but for example, they forgot about WindowsPhone, although apparently it can also be loaded there in a similar way.

On the foreign website Transcend found detailed instructions on the functionality of this WiFi SD card - 60 pages in Russian. It also turned out that new firmwares are periodically released for the card, I initially had 1.6, I downloaded a flasher there and it updated to v1.7...

About the “Direct transmission” and “Internet” modes. I didn’t find any options here for the card to upload files somewhere on the Internet on its own. These are just different methods of communicating with the card:
“Direct transmission” - the card itself acts as a Wi-Fi access point and smartphones, laptops, etc. are connected to it.
“Internet” - the card becomes a WiFi client and itself connects to a Wi-Fi access point. For example, to a home router. And smartphones/laptops are connected to the camera via home LAN. In particular, the software for Android, when you click on the antenna in the upper left corner, scans the local network and finds which IP this WiFi-SD is on. For convenience, in the settings of your router you can give it a static IP bound by MAC. If the card cannot find the WiFi router, then after a minute it automatically switches to direct transmission mode.

And this place in the client settings concerns not the functionality of the card, but the client itself:

This WiFi SD card itself cannot (even when connected to the router in Internet mode) upload photos anywhere. Photos are uploaded through the client on the smartphone (after it is disconnected from the WiFi card and the Internet is available).

Tested Wi-Fi speed.
Under standard conditions (far from the city) - where no other WiFi networks interfere with the broadcast - 20 photos with an average size of 4.5 MB (10 Mpix) are read on a smartphone via WiFi in 2 minutes 40 seconds. Those. - only about 4.5 Mbit (although the WiFi manager shows the connection speed of 65 Mbit)
However, these figures may not be objective. The smartphone itself squeezes 5.9 Mbit from LAN via WiFi on the same files. And speedtest.net (on the same smartphone in the same local area) shows 15-18 Mbit. My Android probably loses some of its time writing files.

However, in practice, speed is not so bad. The map itself generates previews, and for example, a catalog of 70 photos is loaded in 15 seconds. And copying one photo of 4.5 MB in size takes only 8 seconds.

I connected the card via the router to the computer and downloaded the files via the web interface.
The web server living on this WiFi card is Boa/0.94.14rc21.
It does not give the file date in HTTP (although it is in EXIF ​​- so this is not critical).
It downloads to a computer in one stream at a speed of up to 600 kB/sec (and the graph is very smooth, these are clearly not problems on the air, but simply some kind of physical limit on the card) - i.e. The limit is also about 4.5 Mbit... An attempt to download 3 files at once led to slowdowns for all of them and the total speed dropped. An attempt to download one file into several threads failed.
So apparently it’s impossible to squeeze speeds above 5 Mbit out of it. 32GB of photos will be downloaded via Wi-Fi for about 15 hours...

Scanned the ports. I didn't find anything except 80tcp. On Android, using the Wi.cap sniffer, I discovered that the standard client of this card works with it via HTTP...

Current consumption. Since I didn’t have an extra SD panel to connect to the card’s power supply, I connected a USB ammeter to the SD-USB card reader’s power supply. This is what happened:

The absolute numbers in the resulting table must be treated with caution - it cannot be ruled out that the card reader itself has a floating consumption and when a card is detected, it probably itself consumes less than 46mA (for example, its LED also lights up).
It seems that even in mode without WiFi, this card’s current consumption is 85mA higher than that of conventional cards... And in mode with WiFi, it is higher by 160mA (but let me remind you that to save energy, the card’s WiFi can be configured so that it is active for only one minute after on rather than always).

I checked how much the operating time will be reduced if you have a WiFi card. I charged the battery (750mAh) and started shooting video until the battery was completely discharged. On a Transcend SDHC 16Gb the camera recorded video for 3 hours 28 minutes, on a Transcend SDHC 32Gb Wi-Fi (with Wi-Fi turned off) - 3 hours 05 minutes.

In total, operating time is reduced by at least 12%.
Moreover, this is metering in the most economical use case - one turn on and continuous video recording. Each time the card is turned on, it turns on Wi-Fi for at least another minute (which sharply increases energy consumption), so in photo mode (when the camera is turned on more than once until completely discharged, but is constantly turned on and off) - each time the camera is turned on is equivalent to approximately one additional minute of operation.

However, the measured time does not fit with the current measurements:
Battery 750mAh 3.7V. X = current consumed by the camera, Y = current consumed by the WiFi card relative to standard cards
750mAh / X = 3h28m, X = 216mA
750mAh / (216mA+Y) = 3h05m, Y = 31mA
In terms of time, it turns out that the current is higher by 31mA, and not 85mA (as follows from measurements with a card reader). And if you also take into account that the battery is a little over a year old and has probably degraded to 600mAh, it turns out that the current is only 25mA higher. In general, I don’t know where this discrepancy comes from; probably the card reader produces a higher current from the interface signals. But the main thing is that based on these data, we can assume that with different cameras the operating time may vary differently. For example, if for the FZ-28 the operating time was reduced by 12%, then for some other cameras it could theoretically be reduced by more than 30%.

It was also discovered that this card does not work in some card readers. More precisely, everything also depends on the current consumed. The card is detected, the contents of the card are shown in the explorer, but when reading files from the card, the card reader falls off the system. However, only all sorts of non-branded Chinese card readers suffer from this. Transcend, Kingston, Ricoh, HP - everything is fine

In general, in the end, the disadvantage of the card is its relatively high energy consumption. I don’t really understand why it consumes more even when Wi-Fi is turned off.
And for some reason the speed is very slow: less than 5 Mbit, although the visible limits are much larger (WiFi 802.11n should give at least 50 Mbit, physical reading from the card is 17 Mbit/sec (136 Mbit). And why does it limit itself to 5 Mbit?!).

By the way, I note that the WiFi-SD card can be used not only with a camera. And for example, on the computer it also works on the air. You can write files to it from your computer and download them via Wi-Fi. But you cannot record or delete files via WiFi.
