Passage of the missing person quest. Missing person - walkthrough for Skyrim. As it was intended

To free Thorald in Skyrim, there is a need for a side quest for the Gray Manes faction. The quest itself will begin after a dialogue with Fraylia Gray Head in Whiterun, she will tell Dovahkiin that her son is alive, although there are rumors to the contrary.

She asks to come to her house to talk about this without strangers. Having visited her, you will see Avulstein, who will tell you why it is believed that Thorald is still alive. True, first you need to find evidence that will contribute to his search.

In order to get this very evidence, go to the house of the Sons of Battle; it is better to enter through the back entrance, without having to worry about breaking the front door. On the ground floor in a locked room you will find a note on the table, which informs you that Thorald is still alive and that he is being held as a prisoner by the Thalmor in the Northern Watch Fortress.

Skyrim also provides other ways to obtain the required information - for example, you can blackmail Yon the Son of Battle, if only Dovahkiin has already found out about his relationship with Olfina.

To do this, steal a letter from his pocket, which will work perfectly as incriminating evidence. Interestingly, it will remain with you even if you obtain evidence, however, you still cannot talk about their relationship.

Another interesting option - if in the very first dialogue with the Sons of Battle at the market, Dovahkiin says that he stands for the Empire, he will automatically become a friend of the clan and will have free access to their estate, therefore, it will be easy to take that very note already mentioned above.

Another option - if you helped Lars Son of Battle stop the persecution of Breit, then the boy will treat Dovahkiin as his friend, so access to the estate will be open.

One way or another, having obtained the necessary evidence, report this information to Avulstein. After this, different options will be available - you can either try to save the prisoner on your own, or go there after him with Avulstein.

If you decide to act on your own, then again you will have two options - aggressive and bloodless. The second is much more difficult, largely thanks to some bugs in Skyrim.

For now, let's focus on the aggressive option of saving Thorald. Follow to the Northern Sentry Fortress, eliminate the guards there in order to be able to penetrate inside the complex. When you do this, the interrogator will immediately attack you - you will have to eliminate him.

Once done, free Torald, who is chained to the wall in the back room. When he selects a suitable weapon for himself, leave the fortress together. When you leave it, you will hear words of gratitude from the rescued prisoner, after which he will say that returning to Whiterun is not the safest idea, since the Thalmor are looking for him.

He will say that he wants to join the ranks of the Stormcloaks, after which he will leave Dovahkiin a message for his mother. When you come to Fraley with the news about Thorald’s rescue, instead of gratitude you will hear demands for proof that this was done.

Read to her the message left by Thorald - “Do not be afraid of the cold winter winds, for they carry the seeds of the next summer.” This will be like a password for her, after which we will finally receive the gratitude we deserve. And also a reward - an enchanted weapon from the Heavenly Forge.

This very weapon is generated randomly, as is its enchantment, and it is also worth noting that if you allow Eorlund Graymane to die, then instead of a weapon you will receive only 200 septims.

As for the bloodless rescue of Thorald, everything is much more complicated here, as we noted above - we have to thank for this not only the logically more difficult implementation of the task, but also a bug, and the latter in the first place.

If you do not give the evidence that Thorald is alive to Avulstein, but immediately go to General Tullius, then in a conversation with him you will see a remark where you can ask to release the prisoner, however, you will receive a refusal with the argument that this is impossible. If you give the proof to Avulstein, then that same line will not appear in the dialogue with Tullius at all.

Apparently, if it weren’t for the bug, then to resolve the issue peacefully, you would need to talk to the guard at the entrance to the tower, wearing a set of legionary armor, or presenting the guard with a letter from General Tullius, so that the option “Release the prisoner” appears in the dialogue.

True, for unknown reasons, the required set of armor was not in the game at all, and the letter itself is only available in the test location, and you cannot add it to your inventory in any way, even through the console.

In version Skyrim 1.9, something was corrected, thanks to which you can save Thorald bloodlessly by using the “Invisibility” spell, or if you have a well-leveled “Stealth” skill.

The character's salvation lies in the fact that we need to sneak up on him unnoticed, free him and quickly escape from the fortress through the back door, because he does not have the intelligence to act fully covertly, he willingly attacks the guards, thanks to which it is no longer possible to do without shedding blood.

Having escaped from the fortress, we see that Thorald incomprehensibly emerges from the doors, and the guards do not react to him in any way. Miracles, nothing less. But in reality it’s just another bug that hasn’t been fixed yet.

Thorald Graymane appears to be alive! At least, that’s what all the relatives from his clan think. At the same time, everyone else is talking about his death. You can find out what really happened to the rebellious Nord by completing the mission “Missing in Action.” Skyrim, the city of Whiterun - this is where all the threads of this too complicated case lead. I wonder if Dovahkiin will find time to unravel it?

About the game Skyrim

The state of Skyrim is an old Kingdom, the homeland of the Nords and simply a vast region located in the north of Tamriel. It is on the verge of complete destruction. And there, due to the death of King Torug, a civil war had already begun, in which family members had to fight against each other. Some of the great northern people began to oppose the Empire, which had already slightly lost its authority. The other part decided to remain on the side of the authorities, hoping for its protection and a large army.

But it is not the raging war that Tamriel needs to fear. There is talk of prophetic predictions described in ancient scrolls, which speak of the return of a dark force - the dragon Alduin, called the devourer of worlds. It is also reported about a mortal savior born with the soul of a dragon - Dovahkiin. It is believed that only he is able to fulfill the prophecy and banish mythological creatures from Tamriel forever.

Scene

In the game Skyrim, the quest “Missing” is geographically tied to the Northern Watchtower, which is not of particular interest, and the city of Whiterun, founded by 22 comrades from the legendary squad of the leader of the Atmoran fleet, Isgamor. First, a feast hall was built on the mountainside - Jorrvaskr, then the Heavenly Forge, and Whiterun itself appeared even later. Now it is a large, constantly developing city. And although this is neutral territory, in a civil war the local Jarl is more supportive of the Empire.

Whiterun is located in the central part of Skyrim, and from it you can get to any place equally quickly. In addition, trade is excellent there. Therefore, the city is considered a strategically important settlement for both the imperial legionnaires and the rebel Stormcloaks.

Whiterun is divided into three districts. The Windy Region is home to the Hall of the Dead, the Temple of the Goddess Kynareth, the Sky Forge, Jorrvaskr, and the sacred tree of the Nords, the Goldenleaf. In the next district, the Plain, there are taverns, trading shops and barracks where the city guard lives. There is also an empty house here, which will be available to the main character for a fee. And in the Cloud region there is a prison and the Dragon's Reach - a castle in which the Administration and the Jarl live with his family. This is the tallest building in the city. Hence its name.

Characters

Despite the fact that the population of Whiterun is quite high, to complete the mission “Missing in Action” (Skyrim) you only need to know a few individuals from a couple of clans.

Dovahkiin is the main character in the game and the last Dragonborn. With dragon blood flowing through his veins, he is able to understand their language and also absorb their souls. At first no one knows about this, but after killing the first dragon, rumors about his abilities spread throughout the land, and even the “graybeards” from the “High Hrothgar” fortress invite him to their carpet.

“Grey Manes” is a clan that would be the main one in Whiterun if not for rivals from the “Sons of Battle” clan. The reason for their confrontation is the civil war, because the former support Ulfric's rebels, and the latter remain loyal to the Empire. Although these families used to be very close.

At first, the Gray Manes will remain neutral towards the main character, but then their opinion will change. Perhaps the mission “Missing Person” completed in the game “Skyrim” will affect this.

Fraylia Graymane is a jewelry merchant and Thorald's mother. It is she who gives the task to find him, since she does not believe in her son’s death.

Thorald Graymane is a Nord who, except for his family, everyone else has long buried. A brave but stupid character. He openly opposed the Empire, after which he was captured.

Avulstein Greymane is a clansman and Thorald's brother. He constantly hides in the house because he believes that the imperial legion is hunting him. Avulstein really wants to help his brother, but is afraid that he will suffer the same fate. Therefore, he will react quite aggressively to the appearance of the hero, but, realizing that he did not like him, he will put away his huge ax.

"Skyrim: Missing in Action." Kill Walkthrough

Now let's get down to the main thing: how to beat the game. So, the mission “Missing Person”, “Skyrim”, Whiterun. It all begins when the hero, passing by the market, hears a conversation between members of the “Sons of Battle” clan, who are trying to convince Fraylia Gray Mane that her son Thorald has died. The unfortunate woman does not believe them and claims the opposite. And the hero, if he is interested in her problem, she will ask to come to her house in order to better bring him up to date.

In the house of the Gray Manes, the hospitable Fraylia tells Dovahkiin that there is evidence refuting the death of Thorald, only it is in the house of their enemies - the “Sons of Battle”. You can enter the mansion through the back door, so as not to break the door. Inside the building you should find a closed room on the first floor. And in it on the table there will be an “Imperial Message”, from which it will become clear that Thorald is being kept in the Northern Watchtower. After this, you need to tell Avulstein everything, and also decide whether to take him on a rescue mission or leave the nervous Nord at home.

In any case, the aggressive route involves walking to the Northern Watchtower. There you will have to eliminate all the guards and get inside. All that remains is to take the key from the warden, who will also have to be killed. However, the freed Thorald will not return home; he will simply convey a message to his mother, from which she will understand that his son is fine.

"Skyrim: Missing in Action." Walkthrough without killing

However, there is a more peaceful way. For those who don’t like murder, the following information about completing the “Missing Person” quest. “Skyrim” may be a harsh region, but no one has canceled humanity there. True, this will require a high level of development of the Stealth skill. And then everything is simple. You need to get past the guards, find a cell with a prisoner, free him and take him outside in the same way. Moreover, if the hero is not discovered, then Thorald has nothing to worry about.

Reward

Upon completion of the task, the hero will receive a reward. Freilia Gray Mane will not only thank Dovahkiin, but will also give him an enchanted weapon forged in the legendary Heavenly Forge. Unless, of course, the blacksmith dies before this moment. Otherwise, the gift will be 200 septims.

Perhaps someone already knows how to complete this quest without bloodshed, after all, two years have already passed, but still I will write how it turned out for me.

So, I decided to somehow continue Skyrim from the save from two years ago (my second playthrough). Of the mods I installed only all unofficial patches. In Skyrim, I went through almost everything that was possible at that time: the main campaign, the war-empire, the thieves' campaign with the cities, companions, all the main quests of the cities, I went through a little of the assassins (killed my cousin) and went through the Dawnguard, opened the entire map. Heartfire and Dragonborn were not yet released at that time.

So, I constantly put off the Missing Person quest, like maybe I’ll go through everything with the legion, something will come out of this quest. I was also interested in the issue of bloodless passage. I remember back then I searched for such a method on the internet to no avail. As far as I remember, after talking with the old woman, she gives me the task of finding evidence that her son was raked by the Empire. But I didn’t go to the house of the Sons of Battle, but talked with Idolaf, he gave me a piece of paper and I go with it to the old woman. When talking to her, I chose the bloodless path.

Now, while walking around Solitude, “purely by chance” I wandered into Tullius and, after talking with him, he pokes me a piece of paper “Imperial Order”, saying that in gratitude for the war won (by me) (or for something else, I don’t know) go to the Thalmor and sort it out.

Upon arrival, we show the piece of paper to the guard of the Northern Watch Fortress. He says: “Everything is fine, follow me.” But as soon as I enter the gate, the guards attack me (again a bug). If you turn on invisibility, you can calmly follow the guard. Just don’t forget to constantly cast a spell on it, preferably somewhere in the shadows. Even if the guard gets angry at you, sit it out, he will calm down and move on. When we arrive at Thorald, we talk to him, taking the guard away from him before talking.
After the conversation, again turn on invisibility and go to the exit. All the guards will only attack you.

As soon as you go out to Skyrim, run out of the fortress and buff your invisibility so that all the guards leave you behind. After this, quickly run to Torald and talk to him. He will say the same as during the usual capture of a fortress, he will send to the old woman and run away. That's all.

Missing person(orig. Missing in Action) - a side quest for the Gray Manes faction in the game The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim .

Brief walkthrough

  1. Meet Frelia at her home. Fraylia Graymane in Whiterun is confident that her missing son Thorald is alive, but in captivity. She will invite the hero to her home to talk about it.
  2. Find out Thorald's fate: Avulstein Greymane believes that his brother Thorald was captured, and that there is evidence of this in the Sons of Battle home in Whiterun. We need to find evidence and bring it to Avulstein.
  3. Meet Yon the Son of Battle at the Talos Statue.
  4. Take the proof to Avulstein.
  5. Rescue Thorald from the Northern Watchtower.
  6. Get Thorald to safety.
  7. Talk to Thorald Graymane.
  8. Return to Fraylia.

Walkthrough

Having visited the Prancing Mare tavern in Whiterun for the first time, the main character can, upon exiting it, see an ugly scene of a dispute between Fraylia Gray Mane and senior representatives of the Sons of Battle clan. Fraylia is sure that her son Thorald is alive and is in captivity, while Olfrid and his son assure her that he is dead. Having accused her son of treason and finally insulting the elderly woman, the Sons of Battle leave. The main character will have the opportunity to talk to the merchant and offer her his help in finding her son.

The quest will begin after talking with Fraylia Gray Mane in Whiterun. She will tell the hero that her son is alive, despite the fact that everyone says the opposite. She will ask you to come to her home to discuss this without witnesses. Arriving at her home, Dovahkiin will meet her second son, Avulstein, who will explain why they believe that his brother, Thorald, is still alive. However, they need to get evidence that will help them find him.

If the main character for some reason missed the scene at the market or somehow prevented it from taking place, then Fraylia will not have the necessary line of dialogue. However, you can break into her house and talk to Avulstein directly.

To find evidence, you need to go to the home of the Sons of Battle. It is better to enter through the back door, rather than breaking into the main door, and find a note on the table in the locked room on the first floor. The leaf is called "Imperial Message". It says that Thorald is being held captive by the Thalmor in the Northern Watch Fortress.

There are, however, other options to obtain the required evidence:

  • You can blackmail Yon the Son of Battle if the hero knows about his relationship with Olfina. To do this, you need to steal a compromising letter from his pocket. It is interesting that the protagonist remains with it even after receiving evidence, but it is still impossible to tell anyone about their relationship.
  • With a high eloquence skill (above 80), you can convince Idolaf Son of Battle to provide all the information about Thorald.
  • If in the first conversation with the Sons of Battle in the market the hero said that he stands for the Empire, he will be declared a friend of the clan and access to their estate will be free, which will allow him to take the note without any problems.
  • If Dovahkiin helped Lars Son of Battle get rid of the persecution of Breit, the boy will consider the protagonist his friend and access to the estate will be free, which will also allow him to take the imperial message without any problems.

After, in one way or another, the necessary circumstances have been obtained, the information should be reported to Avulstein. Next, there are several options for the development of events:

  1. Go to free the prisoner together with Avulstein;
  2. Go to free the prisoner yourself;
  3. For an independent operation to save Torald, there is a separate option - to solve the case bloodlessly (however, this option is apparently not fully implemented in the game).

If you choose an aggressive rescue method, you need to go to the Northern Guard Fortress and eliminate the guards in order to get inside the complex.

When the hero gets to the prison, the interrogator will attack him as soon as his presence is discovered. After killing him, you need to free Torald, who is chained to the wall in the back room. After he selects a suitable weapon, you need to quickly leave the fortress.

Note: if, in a noble impulse, the hero wants to release the prisoners from the cells, then he will only waste his master keys - they will not go anywhere, and they will even snap back. However, you don’t even have to waste master keys: in the corridor with prisoners to the left of the entrance there are two levers that unlock the cells.

After leaving, Thorald will be grateful to the hero for saving him. He will then explain that it is not safe for him to return to Whiterun, as the Thalmor will be looking for him. He will state that he is planning to join the Stormcloaks and will give the protagonist a message to give to his mother.

When the hero comes to Fraylia with the news of his salvation, she will demand confirmation. We need to retell to her the message that Thorald conveyed: “ Do not be afraid of the cold winter winds, for they carry the seeds of the next summer" She will thank Dovahkiin for his help and for the message that her son is alive and well.

As a reward, she will give the hero an enchanted weapon from the Heavenly Forge. Weapon type and enchantment are random. If Yorlund Graymane dies before completing the quest, the reward will be 200 Septims instead of a weapon.

Note: if the hero, having not found the imperial message, comes to save Thorald at the Northern Watch Fortress, then the dialogue will not appear.

Bloodless path

Warning-icon Important: this moment is one of the biggest bugs in the game.

If you do not give the proof to Avulstein, but go to General Tullius, then in a conversation with him a remark will appear asking to free the prisoner; when choosing this remark, the general will answer that this is impossible; If you give the proof to Avulstein, then the replica with a request to Tullius will not appear.

Note: joining the Imperial Legion and completing all quests for that faction will not change General Tullius' answer.

As it was intended

For a peaceful solution, you had to talk to the guard at the entrance to the tower, wearing a set of legionary armor, or present the guard with a letter from General Tullius in order for the option to appear in the dialogue " release the prisoner" However, the armor set is not present in the game, and the letter is only available in the test location and is not added to the inventory even using console commands.

  • Fixed in version 1.9.

As it is

You can remove the prisoner without bloodshed using the “Invisibility” spell or having a high level of the “Stealth” skill. To do this, you need to quietly get to Torald, free him and quickly leave the fortress through the back door, because he will start fighting with the guards and get stuck. After the main character leaves the fortress, Thorald " magically" appears from the door and the guards do not react to it.

Bugs

  • After talking with Fraylia Gray Mane, the quest may not begin.
  • After the conversation, Freilia will invite the hero into the house. During the day (until the end of the day) the door to the Gray Manes' home will be open. Subsequently, the door will be closed during the day as usual, however, after penetration, they will in any case try to arrest the hero.
  • After talking with Jon Son of Battle, he will unlock the room containing the note. If you take it instead of Yon or steal the note when he takes it, the quest will not continue.
    • Solution: load the save before the note is in the hero's possession and let Yon take it himself, then follow him to the statue of Talos, where he will give it to the protagonist.
  • With the Unofficial Skyrim Patch, a letter from General Tullius can be received immediately after completing the dialogue about taking the oath or if the hero took his side in the negotiations during the quest “Endless Time”.
  • If you decide to storm the fortress together with Avulstein, it may happen that he will show up only after Dovahkiin leaves the fortress with Torald: he and his friends will wait outside. It is also possible that the protagonist’s companion will not go anywhere with them, and he will have to free Torald alone.
  • After talking with Thorald, he may suddenly “disappear” into the wall.
    • Solution: load the latest save (sometimes required more than once).
  • After Thorald Graymane is freed, he will pick up the first weapon he comes across and follow the hero, but if there is no weapon nearby, he will stand still and not go anywhere. To solve this problem, you can put some weapons in the chest or nearby. You should not try to throw a weapon at him using pickpocket mode - he will become aggressive.
  • After completing all the quests of the Imperial Legion, Thorald Graymane does not leave the fortress, and after restarting the game he runs after the hero, but the quest cannot be turned in.
  • If you follow Avulstein after finishing the quest, he will remain standing not far from the ship "Finicky Sload". The route has not been corrected as of v. 1.9.32.0.8.
  • If you take this quest after winning on the side of the Stormcloaks in the civil war, Frelia continues to complain that her sons need to hide, although they are no longer in danger.
  • If the hero is in the fourth stage of vampirism, Alvustein Graymane will become aggressive towards him.
  • Also, if the hero is in the form of a beast, then Alvustein will attack him.
  • If Vidrald and Geirlund survived after completing the quest, then they will forever remain in the courtyard of the Northern Watchtower.
    • Solution PC : bug fixed in Unofficial Skyrim Patch version 1.2 and higher.

Notes

  • If Dovahkiin clears the tower before the quest appears, then Thorald will not go with him. But later, after receiving the task, all that remains is to come to Thorald in the cleared tower and take him out.
