Firmware for iphone 4s. iPad firmware. How to flash an iPad - detailed instructions. Automatic update over the air

The iOS operating system is constantly being improved. Bugs are fixed, new features and capabilities appear. For the good functioning of the device, it is necessary to periodically install new software. This will allow your gadget to use updated or new features. Often, users have difficulties with the firmware procedure on the iPad 2. But if you are familiar with this procedure, the difficulties will be minimized. Let's look into the intricacies of this issue.

You might think that it could be easier than doing a tablet restore through iTunes. If you look at the general algorithm, nothing complicated, everything is clear. But, nevertheless, for many it causes difficulties. Separately, we can highlight the difficulty of transferring the gadget to DFU mode. In addition, it does not yet have a graphic display on the display when activated. At the same time, it is important and necessary to understand what is the difference between the processes of updating the OS and its recovery. These concepts can also cause user confusion.

Update

During the update, the iOS firmware version increases, while the data of the owner and all the applications installed by him are preserved. It is not necessary to make a backup copy before performing the upgrade, but it is recommended. Indeed, in the course of work, failures can occur. Sometimes the only way to fix software failures is through disaster recovery.

The easiest way to update is to download the necessary files directly to the tablet itself. This can be done if you have a good Wi-Fi connection signal. To install, you need to go to the settings and go to the "basic" section. Here you will have access to the item "software updates". Open this item and act according to the proposed instructions.

Press the "install" button. Next, you will be asked to read the terms and conditions. Be sure to read these documents. By clicking "accept" you agree to them. After that, the updates will be automatically installed. This method has its advantages, because it does not require the use of a computer and iTunes. Update files are usually 50 to 150 MB in size. And yes, you don't have to do anything.

The update method through the iTunes program is almost completely identical to the restore process. In order to implement it, you need to download the iTunes program from the official website, install it. Next, use the USB cable to connect the tablet to the PC. Use only original accessories, this will allow the device to transfer data faster and work longer. Open the program. The iPad icon will appear in the upper left corner. You need to click on it.

A window will open where you will be prompted to update or restore the firmware. To start the update, you need to click the button of the same name. Upon completion of this procedure, all your personal information will be saved. The process itself will start and end automatically. At the end of the procedure, disconnect the tablet from the PC.

Recovery

Increases the OS version while deleting all personal information of the owner, since all settings are reset to factory settings. This procedure is usually done if there are any software failures, in order to install the latest current iOS firmware in order to get a cleaned system and start everything from scratch. This procedure is performed when you want to transfer your iPad 2 to another user or intend to jailbreak the gadget.

A common question when changing firmware: is it possible to downgrade iOS? The answer is no. Apple officially allows the installation of only the latest released version. However, there is a small period of time (about two weeks) which is called the "time window". This is the period when a new firmware version is released, when you can still install the previous version.

It is also possible to return to the latest official iOS from the beta version of the OS. In addition to these features, hackers often release software that allows you to downgrade the iOS version. For example, RedSn0w or TinyUmbrella. But, most often, such a rollback can only be done on older versions of the iPad and iPhone.

If your iPad Mini 2 has been jailbroken, don't use recovery. You have a Cydia icon on your desktop. Recovery will start the process of "eternal apple" or "loop of eternal recovery". This means that any device will not be able to boot normally.

If for some reason you still started the recovery, then you can bring the tablet back to life using recovery through the iTunes program. Before you restore, make a backup copy of your personal data, because. upon completion of the process, the data will be deleted.

Flash iPad using iTunes

Flashing is carried out in two ways: through the normal mode and through the low-level DFU mode. In order to carry out this process through the use of normal mode, you must download and install the latest version of iTunes. You can find it on the official Apple website.

On the official website, you can find the latest official version of iOS for your tablet. Now you need to click on the settings icon and go to the "iCloud" section. Here you need to disable the device search function. It is not necessary to do this if you are going to flash the iPad 2 yourself. If you are giving the gadget to a repair service, then in order not to transfer your personal data (Apple ID login and password), disable this function in advance.

Now you can connect your tablet via USB cable to your computer and open iTunes. The program will automatically recognize the gadget and an icon in the form of a tablet will appear in the upper left corner. Click on this icon, a workspace will open in front of you. If you are using Windows, then hold down the Shift key and click on the "restore" button. If you're using a Mac, hold down the Alt key and the Restore button.

A window will open in front of you in which you need to find the downloaded firmware file. Select it and click the "open" button located at the bottom of the window on the right. This will start the device recovery process. After you click on "recovery" all your personal data will be deleted.

Firmware for iPad through DFU mode is also not a complicated procedure. To work, you also need the latest version of iTunes. You can download it on the official website, it is available for free. Also download the latest firmware for iPad 2.

Next, click on the settings icon and go to the "iCloud" section. Here you need to deactivate the iPad search function. It is not necessary to do this. If you're doing the restore yourself, you'll enter your Apple ID when prompted. If you will be restoring your tablet at a repair service, disable this feature so that you do not share your personal data with others.

Now you need to put the tablet into DFU mode. Connect the tablet to the computer using the original USB cable. There are two ways to activate DFU Mode:

  • Simultaneously hold down the two keys "Home" and "Power". Hold them for about ten seconds. You can count to ten in your mind. As soon as ten seconds have passed, press the "Power" key while continuing to press the "Home" button for about twelve more seconds.

  • The second method is considered more correct. For an inexperienced user, it may be more difficult. Turn off the gadget completely and wait a couple of minutes for all processes to complete. Now hold down the "Power" button and count to three. Then hold down the "Home" key as well. Keep them pressed for ten seconds. You can count or count up to 10 in your mind. Then press the "Power" button and hold down the "Home" key for a couple more seconds.

Nothing should be displayed on the tablet screen. If a logo or "lace" appears, it means that the mode has not been activated. You need to try again. Do not be upset and do not panic, few people succeed the first time. When this mode is activated, iTunes will automatically send you a notification that a device is connected in "disaster recovery" mode. An iPad icon will appear in the upper left corner.

Further, if you are using Windows, then hold down the Shift button on the keyboard and press the "restore" key. If you are using a Mac, press the Alt key and at the same time click on the "recovery" button. A window will open in which you need to find the downloaded firmware file. Specify it and click on the "open" button. It is in the lower right corner. A tab will appear on which you need to click "restore". The process will start automatically, as a result, all user data will be deleted.

Before using DFU mode, try to make the firmware in a softer Recovery mode. It allows you to do a hard reset and reflash the device. This mode works at the operating system level. To activate it, you will need to connect the USB cable to the tablet, but do not connect it to the Computer yet. Now turn off the gadget and wait a couple of minutes for the complete completion of all processes.

Next, you need to press the "Home" key and, without releasing, connect the cable to the PC. After a while, the display will show a connection cord and a logo in the form of a melody. After that, you can press the key. Next, you need to open iTunes on your PC and flash it.

Jailbreak iPad Recovery

Tablets that have undergone a jailbreak procedure cannot be restored by conventional methods. This will lead to what is called the "eternal apple" or, in fact, an endless renewal from which there is no way out. In order to restore jailbroken devices, a utility called Semi-Restore was invented. It is distributed free of charge.

This program is able to reset the settings to factory settings without changing the firmware version while not deleting the Cydia application. Using the app is easy. You need to download it, open it and connect your gadget. After that, click on the "SemiRestore" key on the screen. This program is supported by Windows and OS X.

It is not always worth resorting to this application to fix system problems. For example, if Safe Mode often appears , then you can fix this problem by reinstalling the Mobile Substrate package in Cydia . After using the utility, nothing superfluous will remain on your tablet, whether it be repositories or personal data, so before the procedure it is better to make a copy of personal data through iTunes.

If you use this utility, be sure to close Xcode and iTunes. The utility also supports iOS from 5.0 to 6.1.2. While using this program, the tablet reboots several times, so don't worry, this is normal.

Restoring an iPad with SHSH

This method is suitable for older versions of gadgets. Many tablets do not support this method (these are models 4, 3, 2 and those with an Apple A5 processor). To make the firmware you need to use the TinyUmbrella application. First, download and install the latest version of the iTunes program. Now you need to find and download Java.

On the official website, find and download the required version of iOS OS. Now find and download a utility called TinyUmbrella . When you open the utility archive, you need to move its contents to a folder called "programs". Now open the utility.

In the window that opens, find the section called "Advanced" and go to it. You need to check the following boxes: “Save All Avalable…”, “Request SHSH…”, “When connecting a device…”. In the remaining paragraphs, you need to uncheck the checkboxes, if they are placed. Next, there are differences for Mac and Windows users.

For Windows

If you prepared SHSH hashes in advance, then through the use of "explorer" go to your home daddy. Add "\.shsh" to the line with the path. Then press the Enter key. So you went to the folder where the hashes are located. Here you need to copy the hashes that you prepared in advance. If you have not saved anything in advance, then do the following.

Connect the tablet to the PC and specify the TinyUmbrella utility in the sitebar. In the workspace, find the section "Log ' and go into it. There will be a button "Save SHSH “It needs to be pressed. Next, you will be presented with information about the presence or absence of hashes in Cydia. If the "log" is marked in red, then there are no firmware for it. The mark is green, which means that there is a firmware.

If the required file is available, click the "Start TSS Server" button. TinyUmbrella Program must be open while the flashing process is in progress, so do not close it. Now you need to simultaneously press and hold the "Home" and "Power" keys for 12 seconds. You can mentally count to twelve.

Now press the "Power" button while holding down the "Home" key. Hold for eight seconds, when iTunes opens the window, release. The window will contain information about the tablet, and offer to restore the firmware. You need to find and click the "check" button. After a confirmation message appears, confirm the request.

Now hold down the Shift key on your character bar if you're using Windows and hit "restore". Here you will need to provide the path to operating system iOS that you previously saved. Next, you need to wait for the completion of all processes and load the gadget in normal operating mode. In TinyUmbrella click on the "Stop TSS Server" button. Ready.

For Mac

If you have prepared hashes in advance, then you need to go to Finder. Now press three keys at the same time: G, Shift and Cmd. A line will appear to navigate to the folder. You need to enter "~/.shsh » in an empty column. Click Enter and you will be taken to the hashes folder. Here you need to paste a copy of the pre-prepared files. If you haven't prepared them ahead of time, move on to the next step.

Now you need to do all the steps described above for Windows users from the moment you connect the tablet to the PC until the moment you press the “check” key. After agreeing, you need to hold down the Option (Alt) key and press "restore". Now you need to wait for the process to complete, and then download the gadget in working mode. In the window of the TinyUmbrella program, click on the "Stop TSS Server" button. Everything, the firmware is done.

Before resetting to factory settings, back up your personal data. This is necessary for their subsequent return to the tablet, because during the reset process, all data that is set by the user is deleted.

During flashing, errors may occur due to which the device may not work. In such situations, try to repeat the flashing procedure. If the repeated actions did not give results, it is better for you to contact the service center for diagnostics and repair. Sometimes when installing a newer version of the OS, the device starts to slow down. This is due to the fact that a more “good” system loads older gadget models more heavily after you have “lived in” them.

In such a situation, optimizing the tablet settings can help. For starters, you can change the parallax effect of the graphics. You can find the regulator in the accessibility settings, which is located in the "general" section. Activate the toggle switch opposite "decrease movement".

Turn off background app updates and automatic content downloads. You can do this in the "iTunes Store and App Store" section, which is located in the settings. Background updates are disabled in the "basic", "content update" section. Disabling unnecessary applications in the "SportLight" section will add speed to the gadget. Remove "heavy" applications that you do not use.

What is the recovery or firmware update of iPhone 6? First you need to understand the very concept of firmware. This term refers to the firmware of the device. In other words, the firmware is the operating system. In the case of the iPhone 6 and other models of this phone, we are talking about iOS. In addition, this operating system is also used in other Apple products. For example, iPod Touch players and iPad tablet computers also use iOS - iPhone Operation System.

The process of flashing a smartphone can consist of one of two operations: either restore or update iOS. For clarity, many users and specialists use the term flashing, which combines both procedures in its name.

iPhone flashing methods

At the moment, there are two options for flashing iPhone 6. This is restoring the firmware or updating it. Essentially, both of these procedures are the same process with the same end result. In both a recovery situation and an iOS update, the end result is a device with clean firmware. True, here we are not talking about installing iOS necessarily the latest version, but rather about its state.

iPhone flashing options

Flashing the iPhone 6 firmware can be done in two ways. In this case, one first method is a universal option that is suitable for both restoring and updating iOS. The second flashing option can only be used when updating the operating system. So, they share the iPhone 6 firmware through iTunes utilities and update with WiFi connections.

In the first option, you need to download the desired edition of iOS to a personal computer or laptop, and then, using Apple's proprietary application iTunes, install the built-in software on your phone. This method is suitable for iOS up to version 4.3.5 inclusive. For newer firmware, you can use the second method, which is updating iOS using the Internet and a wireless Wi-Fi connection.

What is the difference between an iPhone restore and an update?

Both restoring and updating the iPhone 6 are operations with the built-in software of the smartphone. In the first option, all data will be deleted from the phone, including photos, videos, phone book contacts, audio files, calendar information, and the like. In addition, the device settings will be reset to the factory default settings. Roughly speaking, restoring the iPhone 6 is bringing the phone back to the state it was in when it was released from the assembly line. But, at the same time, after the restoration, the device will have the latest clean version of iOS.

During the iPhone 6 update, there is a procedure for switching to a newer built-in software. At the same time, the contents of the phone, personal information and settings set by the user will remain on the device, and iOS will be updated to the latest current edition.

Summing up this part of the material, it can be noted that the fundamental difference between restoring and updating iOS is one - in the first case, all data from the phone is deleted, and in the second it remains.

Users of Apple products already know that the iPhone 6, like other iOS devices, can be and function in several modes. These include Normal Mode, Recovery Mode or Recovery Mode, and Firmware Upgrade Mode or DFU Mode. To restore or update an iPhone, you can use any of the three named modes of operation.

How to restore iPhone via iTunes?

To restore iPhone 6 using iTunes, you need to download and install the latest version of the application on your PC or laptop, and also download the file with the iOS operating system of the version used on your phone to your computer. The second condition is optional, but will save time during the iPhone 6 recovery process. After installing the latest version of the iTunes application, you must turn off the Find My iPhone option on your phone if it is activated. After that, you should connect your phone to the computer with a USB cable and launch the iTunes application.

Now you need to click on the icon with the name of the iOS device in the upper right corner of the program window, which will allow you to be on the phone and iTunes sync tab. Then you need to click on the inscription "Restore" and specify the path to the firmware file in the window that appears. By the way, it will be emphasized that you must press the "Restore" key while holding the "Shift" key on the keyboard. This is true for Windows computers. Mac users need to press and hold the Alt key.

Now you need to select the iPhone 6 firmware file with the “.ipsw” extension located on the computer’s hard drive. Then click "Open" and give an affirmative answer to the system's request to restore the iPhone. iTunes will begin the recovery process, erase all data from the phone's memory, and download new firmware to the device. In this case, the iPhone 6 will be forcibly transferred to the "Recovery Mode" operating mode, and the phone's state will return to the factory settings.

By the way, it will be helpful to say that it is not necessary to download a file with the desired version of iOS to your computer beforehand. This process can be completely entrusted to the iTunes application. True, in this case, the latest existing version of iOS will be installed on the phone, even if it does not match the one that was already on the iPhone 6. Otherwise, the procedure will have the same results as with the recovery method described above, that is, the device will be cleaned from user files and personal data.

How to restore iPhone from Recovery Mode and DFU Mode?

The process of flashing an iPhone 6 from "Recovery Mode" or DFU mode is exactly the same, if you do not take into account the need to transfer the phone specifically to one of these two states.

After switching to the required mode, you need to connect the phone to the computer using a USB cable and open the iTunes utility. The app will detect an iPhone 6 that is in recovery mode. After that, click on the screen on the inscription "Restore", while holding down the "Shift" key on the keyboard (Mac users should press and hold the "Alt" key). Now it remains only to set the path to the firmware file with the “.ipsw” extension on the local disk of the computer and click on “Open”. iTunes will do the rest of the work itself, and the user will only have to wait for the procedure to complete.

Is it possible to reset iPhone settings without updating the operating system?

When it comes to restoring an iPhone 6 using iTunes, as a result of the procedure, the owner receives a phone with the latest edition of iOS firmware. Thus, there is a complete update of the built-in software, which is not always necessary for device users. For example, flashing a phone previously locked for a specific mobile operator will lead to the loss of unlocking. The device will stop working with all SIM cards. The exception will be the cards of a single operator, under which the iPhone 6 was initially blocked. Using the SemiRestore application can help to avoid such results, but this will be discussed in detail in another article.

iPhone update

As mentioned above, there are two ways to update iPhone 6. The first of them is a procedure that is almost completely identical to restoring a phone. This process also uses the iTunes app. The second method is implemented through an Internet connection via Wi-Fi without using a personal computer or laptop.

Update iPhone from Computer via iTunes

To perform this operation, you need to connect your phone to a PC with a USB cable and open the iTunes application. Then, in the "Devices" menu, select your own iPhone 6, and on the phone's synchronization tab with the utility, click on "Update". Then you need to confirm the start of the operating system update procedure. In addition, to save time, you can download a file with the desired version of iOS to the local disk of your computer in advance, and then hold down the "Shift" key on your keyboard when you click on "Update". For users of Mac operating systems, the Alt + Refresh combination will be relevant. After the procedure is completed, the iOS version will be updated to the required one, and all files, user personal information and settings will remain unchanged on the internal memory of the phone.

Update iPhone using Wi-Fi

Starting with iOS 5.0, the creators of Apple products provided the ability to update the iPhone 6 operating system using an Internet connection via Wi-Fi without using a computer and iTunes. In phones with such built-in software, an additional option “Software Update” appeared in the settings. At the same time, firmware in this way is possible only if you have access to the Internet via Wi-Fi. So, to use this update option, you need to go to your phone settings. Then select the "Basic" section, and there "Software Update".

After that, you should click on "Download and install", and in the next window that appears, agree to the terms of use. The iOS update process will start. After the procedure is completed, all files, user personal data and phone settings will remain on the iPhone 6. True, such an operation can damage those devices that were previously blocked under one cellular operator, and then unlocked.

In conclusion, it is worth emphasizing that using the methods described above for flashing the iPhone 6 operating system will make it possible to save a significant part of time and money, saving Apple phone owners from having to constantly visit service centers to repair their devices.

Apple smartphones and tablets are famous for the well-coordinated work of software and hardware. Due to this, the uninterrupted functioning of the devices is achieved, and the American corporation eliminates all emerging problems with the firmware as soon as possible through updates. In this case, the user may need to reflash the iPhone or iPad. You can do this yourself, without the involvement of specialists from the service center.

The concept of flashing a device means restoring it. This process should not be confused with an update, since it has one fundamental difference: when performing a restore, all data from the iPhone or iPad is permanently erased. After flashing, the device returns to the factory settings, and it will be possible to restore data only if there is a backup copy.

Why you need to flash your iPhone or iPad

Nothing is immune from software failures, including Apple devices. Despite the fact that one corporation is responsible for the development of hardware and firmware, problems can arise with the operation of the iPhone or iPad. A software failure can lead to the failure of an iOS device, and it will be possible to return it to a working state only by flashing it.

Also, recovery may be necessary if the user has forgotten the iPhone or iPad unlock code. By resetting the device to its original state, the password will be removed from it.

Another reason for flashing the iPhone may be the planned sale of the device. In order for the buyer to receive a smartphone new with factory settings and without the data of the former owner, you can restore it.

Important Rules for Restoring Apple Devices

The iPhone and iPad recovery process can only be performed using a computer using iTunes.

Apple does not allow you to install a version of iOS other than the installed version on your device. This rule has an exception, which received the name "Time Window" among users. This concept defines a period of two weeks (in some situations it changes) after updating the firmware, during which the user can “roll back” the iOS version to the previous one.

Important: This rule does not apply to beta versions of iOS firmware. If a test version of the software is installed, at any time the owner of the device has the right to restore it to the latest official firmware version via iTunes.

Preparing to flash your iPhone

Before proceeding directly to the device recovery process, you need to download the correct firmware version for its subsequent installation. iOS software is distributed in the .ipsw format. Depending on the model of smartphone or tablet, it differs, and it is necessary to download the firmware for a specific device from the Internet in order for the installation to proceed smoothly.

To determine which firmware version is needed for an iPhone or iPad, you need to look at the back of the device. It always has an indication of a specific model, for example, Model A1332.

Please note: Each device from Apple (iPhone 5, 6, 6s and others) is made in several variations, that is, they differ in models. It is important to choose the firmware specifically for a particular model, since they differ from each other quite significantly, primarily in supported networks.

Also, before flashing the iPhone or iPad, you must disable it on the device. If this option is not disabled, the system will not allow you to restore your smartphone or tablet.

Firmware is installed on Apple devices only using iTunes. It can be downloaded from the official website of the American corporation.

Important: Before installing the firmware on your iPhone or iPad, update the version of iTunes to the latest version so that there are no failures in the recovery process.

How to flash an iPhone or iPad

Apple has provided two recovery modes for its devices - standard and using DFU mode. The second option is useful if the first one does not work or errors occur when restoring a smartphone / tablet through it.

Flashing an iPhone or iPad in Normal Mode

Restoring the device through normal mode performs as follows:

After that, the process of restoring the device will begin, which will be performed in a fully automatic mode.

Here we deal with standard iPhone firmware methods, as well as flashing through Recovery Mode and DFU. Bookmark the instructions. It is useful to update or reanimate the device.

Automatic update by air

Why: For a standard transition to a new version of iOS.

How: Go to Settings - General - Software update. Wait for the information to be updated, check out the innovations, download and install the software using the appropriate button.

Automatic update via iTunes

Why: To upgrade to a new version of iOS if you can't download the software from your iPhone.

How: Connect iPhone to computer via USB. Go to the device management section, click the button Refresh and wait for the operation to complete.

Manual iPhone Update via iTunes

Why: To switch to a new version of iOS using the downloaded firmware file, if you cannot update the device using standard means.

How: Connect iPhone to computer via USB. Go to the device management section. Hold down the Option key for Mac or Shift for Windows and click the button Refresh. Select the downloaded firmware file and wait for the operation to complete.

Smartphone firmware via Recovery Mode

Why: To get absolutely clean iOS if the operating system is not working properly.

How: Turn off your smartphone. Hold down the volume down key for 7s or Home for other iPhones and connect the device to your computer.

iTunes will automatically detect that there is a problem with your iPhone and offer to update or restore it.

Flashing an iPhone Using DFU Mode

Why: To revive an iOS device when Recovery Mode does not help - the iPhone does not turn on and does not respond to other manipulations.

How: Connect your iPhone to your computer, and turn it off if it's on.

Press and hold the power button for three seconds. Without releasing it, press the volume down button for 7-ki and Home for other devices and hold for ten seconds. Release the power button, but keep holding the second one for another five seconds.

iTunes will notify you when your iPhone is connected. Now it is in recovery mode via DFU and you can do it by pressing the appropriate button.

If the Apple or iTunes logo lights up on the screen, you have put your smartphone into Recovery Mode. Did something wrong, so try again from the beginning.

With the release of updates to the mobile operating system iOS, Apple is much more organized than the competing product from Google. And although the number of smartphone models that support iOS hardly reaches two dozen, from time to time the company restricts access to the current firmware version on devices that it considers “obsolete”.

This is due both to hardware incompatibility and device performance (for example, it is extremely difficult to imagine the iPhone 3GS working on iOS 10), and to a marketing decision. After all, Apple stops signing past firmware and restricts access to new ones. You cannot install unsigned firmware (firmware with an expired digital certificate).

Which iOS and which iPhone can be installed - you will learn in this material.

iPhone 2G

Minimum iOS Version: iPhone OS 1.0 (1A543a)
Maximum iOS Version: iOS 3.1.3 (7E18)
Average update size: 91 - 245 MB

The original iPhone was the only device on which you can install the first version of the operating system. Then they were called like iPhone OS. The latest firmware available for installation on the original iPhone is iOS 3.1.3. Downgrade is available.

iPhone3G

Minimum iOS Version: iOS 2.0 (5A347)
Maximum iOS Version: iOS 4.2.1 (8C148)
Average update size: 225 - 322 MB

The updated iPhone 3G came out of the box with iOS 2.0. The firmware is supported to this day. Upgrading above iOS 4.2.1 is not possible. Please note that Apple does not sign iOS 4.0, 4.0.1 and 4.0.2 firmware.

iPhone 3GS

Minimum iOS Version: iOS 4.1 (8B117)
Maximum iOS Version: iOS 6.1.6 (10B500)
Average update size: 382 - 784 MB

With the "high-speed" version of the iPhone 3GS, Apple acted very generously. The latest firmware version is iOS 6.1.6. But with the version of iOS 5, a strange situation turned out. It is no longer signed and cannot be installed. At the same time, the minimum possible iOS that will work on a smartphone is iOS 4.1.

iPhone 4 (GSM/CDMA)

Minimum iOS Version
Maximum iOS Version: iOS 7.1.2 (build depends on the model)
Average update size: 1.12 GB

The only firmware that can be installed on the iPhone 4 is iOS 7.1.2. Starting with the iPhone 4, Apple closed any selection options. A complete rejection of skeuomorphism on the part of the company was met with a forced transition to “flat” iOS 7. Be careful during installation, since the iPhone 4 is presented in three versions: GSM, CDMA and GSM (rev. A) 2012. You need to install your own firmware for each.

iPhone 4s

Minimum iOS Version: iOS 9.3.5 (13G36)
Maximum iOS Version: iOS 9.3.5 (13G36)
Average update size: 1.5 GB
