Lithuanian mobile operators. Mobile communications in Lithuania. How much and where to buy a sim card

In this regard, the country is not much different from neighboring Latvia - two of the three main operators are the same: BITE and Tele2. The third is Telia, which appeared as an independent company not so long ago and was previously called Omnitel.

In terms of quality, it makes no sense to single out any one operator, they are approximately the same in terms of territory coverage. Lithuania is a small country and there are virtually no "white spots" on the admission map.

Where is the best place to buy a SIM card

SIM cards can be purchased at specialized stores of mobile communication companies, at the cash desks of all supermarkets, at gas stations or at Lietuvos Spauda newsstands.

Considering that no documents are needed to connect to the network at a prepaid rate, you can buy a SIM card yourself. If you have any questions during the registration process, it is better to contact the officials. Moreover, all SMS and system messages come in Lithuanian.

Mobile tariffs for tourists

As such, operators in the country do not have special travel packages, but you can activate a special option and start calling to Russia at a quite reasonable price.

For example, the tariff from Tele2 can definitely be called the best in terms of price. The My Countries service costs 1.45 euros and allows you to call Russia at 0.27 euros per minute.

Noteworthy is the Extra tariff from Telia - 5.5 euros per connection (of which 4 are returned to the account), 1 GB of mobile Internet is included. Calls to Russia will cost 0.6 euros (42 rubles).

Meanwhile, the price level of Russian operators, although slowly, is still beginning to be influenced by competition from foreign colleagues in the shop - I don’t want to lose the tourist segment. That is why roaming rates in the country today are not as high as they were a few years ago - for example, one of the Russian operators offers a tariff of 19 rubles per minute of calls from Lithuania. What to choose - a local SIM card or roaming - it's up to you.

How to call Lithuania from Russia

Nothing complicated: dial "8", connect to the international line (dial 10 after the beep), indicate the country code (370), locality and landline phone number. If you call from a mobile, the call will go directly through the national code +7.

Calling a taxi, ordering a pizza or getting a telephone consultation about interesting excursions without spending crazy sums on it is the dream of any tourist. Which is better: roaming or offers of Lithuanian operators within the country? the site decided to find out how it is cheaper to call Belarus from Lithuania, and tested one of the tariffs of the Lithuanian operator, affectionately called “Hedgehog”.

Everything is clear and without words

You will be surprised how easy it is to get your personal SIM card in Lithuania. Compared to Belarus, cellular communication in Lithuania is quite cheap, and connecting to a mobile operator takes just a few minutes. The Belarusian public is genuinely surprised when they learn that a SIM card can be purchased anywhere, even at a postal kiosk, and for a very nice price. We buy a small cardboard envelope from some Lithuanian operator, connect and calmly communicate with all of Lithuania .. on the advice of local residents, I chose an operator Omnitel(there are others, for example, Bite and Tele2), which offers a tariff for tourists Ezys, which means "hedgehog" in Lithuanian. Where such a name came from is a mystery, but nevertheless, for some reason, it is the “Hedgehog” that the Lithuanians themselves prefer.

Where to buy a Lithuanian SIM card

Buying a Lithuanian SIM card is as easy as shelling pears. You don't even need a passport for this. Those who wish have several suitable options. The choice is large. Are looking for:
- any newsstand Lietuvos Spauda;
- R-Kiosk;
- Maxima stores (contact the cashier).

This is what newsstands look like where you can get a Lithuanian SIM card

How much does a mobile connection cost in Lithuania

We purchased a SIM card for only 3.50 Litas ($1.38). This price is provided 150 minutes of calls, 1000 SMS and 100 megabytes of internet. There are also more expensive tariffs, where, of course, there will be more opportunities. The SIM card is accompanied by a booklet with instructions for activation and basic operations in Lithuanian, English and Russian. As soon as you are going back home, you can throw away the card, as the card simply turns off automatically after a while.

How to activate a Lithuanian SIM card

To activate the card, you just need to insert a SIM card into your phone, enter a pin code and call the number indicated in the instructions, after which you will automatically connect and you can find out your personal number. We got it pretty quickly. There is only one snag: the number will be called to you in Lithuanian, so you will guess the numbers to the point of insanity. You will have to look for a person who, after your call, will give you the secret of the number. In fact, there are no big problems in this. You will be helped in any cafe or at the reception in the hotel, in extreme cases, you can always approach someone on the street.

How to top up your account

You can top up your account:
- at the checkout in any store or kiosk Lietuvos Spauda and R-Kiosk, saying that you need to top up your Ezys for a certain amount;
- through SEB and Swedbank ATMs;
- through the SMS-PERLAIDA service (SMS transfer);
- through a special operator card linked to your number.

All these operations are described in detail in the attached instructions.

Mobile Internet in Lithuania at Ezys tariff

We figured out the phone, but we had to suffer with the Internet connection. The instructions say that Mobile Internet connects automatically after receiving the settings via SMS. And again trouble. SMS also comes in Lithuanian, it is unrealistic to understand something if you are not a polyglot. Moreover, the SMS message did not open at all. In this case, you need to open the SIM card settings on your phone and manually select a data transfer operator. Once you do this, the internet will work. Perhaps it will work. We were lucky, but at the kiosk the seller warned that we might have to wait a while after connecting. The work of the Internet can hardly be called ideal. It intermittently freezes or shuts down completely. You will transfer photos for six months, and, of course, you can completely forget about video clips. With the transfer of text and browsing sites, "Hedgehog" still copes well. Yes, and not such a problem with the Internet in Lithuania. Available Wi-Fi points meet every 2 steps. As a last resort, go to the same Lietuvos Spauda newsstands, where free internet is always guaranteed to work and is provided free of charge.

In the envelope you will find a SIM card, a recharge card and detailed instructions.

What is the validity period of the Lithuanian SIM card account

The account remains valid for another 100 days from the date of the first call. After the expiration date, the phone number remains valid for another 150 days. During this time, you can only receive calls and messages. Then the number is blocked. A notification message will be sent 3 days before the expiration of the account.

Ezys Fare Bonuses Offered

If you register on the website www.ezys.lt and fill out a special form, you will be able to order a special Ezio Viza card, with which you will receive discounts in cafes, nightclubs, cinemas, hotels and even travel agencies. The card can be picked up at any Omnitel salon.

Roaming SIM cards

In addition, you have the opportunity to use special roaming cards for tourists, which are used only during the trip. For example, cards are Sim Sim Bright Light, which actively promises its customers high quality communications in more than 190 countries around the world. An additional advantage is the absence of a subscription fee and the expiration date at which the SIM card is blocked. Even with a zero balance, you can receive incoming calls in most countries of the world (about 130). The cards are not far behind "Goodline". Incoming calls are also free here, but you will have to pay for messages.

For participation in organizing the trip, we separately thank the Minsk travel agency "Vervol", the Lithuanian travel agency Vilnius Relax for getting to know unusual places in Vilnius and the airline "Belavia".

Lithuania is one of the Baltic countries where not only tourism is well developed, but also cellular communications. Arriving here, a tourist can purchase a local SIM card in large stores, in kiosks under the Lietuvos spauda sign and at gas stations and, of course, in branded stores cellular communication. Here you can also buy a top-up voucher by specifying the name of the provider. It should be noted that the choice of the tourist is quite wide. Lithuanian operators:

bit GSM,
omnitel,
tele2,
Eurocom.

All of the above providers have prepaid rates that are suitable for tourists. Bite and Tele2 services are the most popular not only among guests, but also among Lithuanians. Due to the high quality of communication and good coverage. Omnitel and Eurocom, in general, are also not inferior in these characteristics. In this case, the tourist needs to focus on the price and volume of necessary services. The validity period of the starter package depends on the tariff plan that was selected. From three months to six months from the date of the last replenishment of the account. Moreover, after the expiration of this period, the subscriber can receive incoming calls and SMS for two to three months.

And although the conditions of Lithuanian operators are acceptable, for tourists, we would still recommend connecting an inexpensive tariff for Lithuania, so that you can not only use mobile Internet in Europe, but also make inexpensive calls from different countries.

Internet in Lithuania: choosing a tariff plan in Russia

You can also buy a SIM card in Lithuania, but it is much better when all important issues are settled before crossing the native border. Moreover, roaming in this case will be beneficial. For a trip to Lithuania, we suggest considering the following connection options:

The tariff option on the Globalsim New SIM card will be doubly beneficial - the subscriber will be able to use inexpensive Internet (1 cent per 1 megabyte).

The Mundo tariff from Orange will allow you to forget about the problem of mobile Internet not only in Lithuania, but also in 40 European countries. The cost of a package for 3 GB = 15 euros, the period of possible use is one month.

You can find all the details on the website tariff plans and conditions for their connection.

Lithuanian wireless networks

As practice shows, most tourists are more concerned about the price of calls with Russia than the cost of the Internet. After all wifi network here one of the best in Europe (both in terms of coverage and data transfer speed). Free wireless networks are available in shopping malls, hotels, cafes and other popular public places. In addition, anyone can connect to the paid Wi Fi Zebra (daily use - 87 cents). There are more than 4,000 hotspots throughout the country.

However, if the tourist is going to conduct financial transactions via the Internet during the trip (payment for tickets, restaurants, etc.), then it will be more reliable to connect the mobile Internet in Lithuania, rather than using wireless networks. Since today cases of theft of personal data have become more frequent.

Providing yourself with mobile communications and the Internet is not a problem. It is enough to buy a local SIM card and it's all in the bag.

Calls from Lithuania to Russia will cost 1.42-1.50€ per minute.

We use our operator's roaming

Local operators and SIM cards

Mobile communication services in Lithuania are provided by three large companies:

  • Tele2
  • Telia

Good communication quality in Lithuania is provided by Tele2. This is a Swedish holding headquartered in Stockholm. Basically, the company uses UMTS/WCDMA and GSM standards. There is also LTE and LTE-Advanced, but they are far from available everywhere - coverage is approximately 80% of the country's territory. Tele2 provides good 2G Internet in all locations in Lithuania.

Telia (Omnitel) is one of the key telecommunications companies in the Baltic countries. It has been operating in Lithuania since 1991 and owns the largest share of the mobile services market. In 2017, the company entered the Telia holding. Communication is available in almost all regions of the republic, but there may be problems with 3G and LTE.

Company BITE practically does not differ from its competitors, but thanks to a balanced tariff policy, it is quite popular. Communication is of high quality, although it may not be available in remote rural areas.

The advantages of mobile communication in Lithuania are very high speed and wide area coverage.

No documents are required to purchase a SIM card.

Each of the operators offers its own recharge cards, which can be used on a prepaid basis:

  • BITE-Labas
  • Tele2-Pildyk
  • Omnitel (Telia) - Ezys.

You can buy cards:

  • in company representative offices
  • at the checkouts of all supermarkets (Norfa, Rimi, Iki, Maxima)
  • car filling stations
  • at the Lietuvos Spauda newsstands.

You can also transfer money to your account there.

For those who are going to live outside the city, it is important that there is a high communication signal and stable Internet (H + and above).

Telia is currently the leader in terms of coverage.

We recommend buying Ezys or Labas recharge cards. They have stable internet throughout the country. Prices are like this:

  • 3-4 euros for 2 GB of internet + endless SMS + conversations
