We are building a home network. Network media player. Connecting and setting up multimedia equipment Assembling and connecting the player

Today you will learn how to properly connect a TV to a computer and all the possibilities of such a connection, as well as how to organize viewing of your media library on Smart TV and other devices that support a home DLNA server.

What is DLNA?

The Integrated Digital Network Consortium (DLNA) is a group of companies that have come together to create a common, open standard for connecting devices so that all DLNA-enabled clients can automatically view media content from each other while on the same network.

What devices support DLNA?

DLNA technology is compatible with any devices:

  • smart TVs;
  • smartphones and tablets;
  • PCs and laptops;
  • media players and Blu-ray players;
  • game consoles;
  • home media servers (NAS);
  • wireless printers;
  • photo and video cameras;
  • audio systems.

All DLNA-enabled devices have a corresponding logo or sticker indicating the type of digital content supported (for example, audio, video, photos), as well as the purpose: server, printer, player, etc. Most devices from major manufacturers such as Intel, HP, Motorola, HTC, Microsoft, Samsung, Sony, LG, Panasonic, etc. support DLNA. Apple has developed its own standard - AirPlay. If you have an Apple device, then using it in your media network, consisting of clients from other manufacturers, is not possible.

How does the DLNA network work?

As you already understand, DLNA devices are designed for mutual connection: creating a multimedia network between themselves. Each device is assigned its own type depending on its purpose. For example, any storage device: smartphone, media player, TV or PC can belong to both the Digital Media Server and Digital Media Player types, because they are capable of both receiving and playing digital content from another DLNA device.

How to create a DLNA network?

A wireless router (or wi-fi router) is the central element in the network and is used to connect devices to each other in a common home wireless network.

Equipment for building a home network with DLNA

You will need:

  • TV with DLNA support;
  • DLNA digital media server (for example, file server, PC, laptop or media player with HDD);
  • wi-fi router.

I will talk about building a DLNA network not only with a wireless connection, you can also use a wired method of connecting devices, instead of a wi-fi router, use a regular router (switch) to connect the file source (home server - DLNA server) with a display device (DLNA client). You can also use (to distribute the Internet via the power grid), in addition, you will need Ethernet cables to connect devices to your network.

How to set up a DLNA home media server?

1 Connect a DLNA-enabled TV to a wi-fi router (for example, Samsung with Smart TV).

Option 1 - wired connection. Connect using an Ethernet cable to the router. It is enough to connect one end of the cable to the LAN port of the TV, and the other to a free port of the router (or switch, depending on the structure of your network).

Option 2 - wireless connection. If you are using a wi-fi router (wireless router), then just connect the TV to an existing wireless network via the built-in or external (USB) wi-fi adapter, directly to the router. If the TV is very far from the router, then you can install a wireless bridge (use the router in Bridge mode or buy one) to connect the TV to the router. I also recommend reading the article about. The wireless bridge connects to the TV via the LAN port, and to the router via a Wi-Fi access point.

Option 3 – connection using Powerline adapters. This type of connection uses the mains power without running Ethernet cables. This method will help you set up a home network using existing electrical wiring and you will no longer need cables to connect DLNA clients. Powerline adapters are produced by almost all network equipment manufacturers: TP-Link, Netgear, D-Link, etc. They are called Powerline devices. Next, you simply connect the plug of your router, TV and other devices to the power outlet as usual, but now all your devices will form a DLNA network.

2 Add other DLNA compatible devices to your home network

Now you can connect DLNA servers (devices from which you want to play files on your smart TV) to the router - PC, laptop, phone or media player. All servers will be displayed on the smart TV since they are on the same network and you can play the content that is stored on their media. There are different ways to configure different types of devices on a DLNA network.

PCs and laptops on a DLNA network

Connect your computer or laptop to your router or router using any of the above options. The most important point in setting up DLNA on a PC or laptop: the need to install the appropriate program - media center (media shell). The most popular of them (each program has a link with information about it and settings):

  • Serviio

It is possible not to install media center applications to create a DLNA server, but use Windows Media Player 11 or 12. To use them as a DLNA server, you must allow access to files on your laptop or PC: open Windows Media Player, go to Options menu, then open the Windows Media File Sharing tab and enable media sharing.

Kodi Media Center Interface Window

You can select a media shell to use as a DLNA server from the list above. After installing the program you like to create a media center (DLNA server), you should configure it and select files (photos, videos, music files) to transfer to a TV or other display device.

Mobile devices on the DLNA network

3 Setting up DLNA on your TV

Once you have connected all DLNA devices, turn on the TV and go to the home screen of your Smart TV (using the example of a Samsung TV). Find and launch the AllShare app, which lets you find music, photos, and videos stored on DLNA devices on your network.

If you have a Sony TV (model before 2015), then you need to turn it on, press the “Home” button and turn on “Media Player”. Once you select the content type: music, photos or videos, you will be able to see the DLNA servers on your home network.

4 Using DLNA on Android OS

To watch videos from a computer on smartphones and tablets with the Android operating system, you need to install a special application. There are quite a few such applications; I can recommend MediaHouse or Bubble UPnP, which can be downloaded for free on Google Play.

After you install the application, you need to take a few simple steps:

  • select the source - your computer or other device with DLNA support and installed, from which you will watch the video;
  • select the receiver, that is, your Android OS device;
  • select a video from the list of available files.

In addition to universal applications, mobile device manufacturers offer their own software with DLNA support. Samsung has AllShare, LG has SmartShare, etc.

Using DLNA-enabled apps on Android devices requires no setup. It is enough to launch a DLNA server (for example, Kodi on a computer), and it will immediately appear in the list of available connections in the application on your smartphone or tablet. Select your computer from the list, click “Browse” and specify the required folder. Don't forget that your smartphone can also act as a DLNA server.

Connecting and setting up multimedia equipment

So, we purchased headphones, a microphone and a Web camera - this is our multimedia equipment. It connects to the computer as follows:

Headphones must be connected to the green connector of the sound card (sound output);

Microphone - to red (audio input);

And a Web camera to a USB port (it doesn’t matter which one, there are a lot of them on the computer, but they are all identical).

After the physical connection, we need to configure the equipment programmatically, mainly by volume, and we also need to install the Web camera driver into the system. We will do all this now. We will assume that the headphones are in working condition and the sound drivers are already installed in the operating system. This is what you did when installing Windows, using the CD that came with your computer, which contains all the system drivers. Now we only need to adjust the volume of audio playback and recording. It is extremely important to know how this is done at the operating system level, and although many voice communication programs have their own tools for quickly adjusting the sound during a conversation, we will not count on this too much and will learn how to adjust the sound ourselves using Windows.

I have already published more than one article on the topic of setting up DLNA. We ran the DLNA server in different ways, on different devices, and for different TVs. In this instruction, I will show you how to enable a DLNA server in Windows 10. Let it be a computer or a laptop, it doesn’t matter. The main thing is that Windows 10 is installed on it. There are many different programs that you can use to run a media server on your computer. But in this instruction we will not use any third-party programs. We will use only standard Windows 10 tools. However, this option is available in both Windows 8 and Windows 7. There are few differences there.

And so, first, let’s figure out what DLNA is, why run this server on a computer, laptop, and what to do with it. Everything is very simple. Using DLNA technology you can transfer media content (video, photo, music) between devices on the local network. Most often, this technology is used to view videos or photos that are on a computer on a Smart TV. I wrote in more detail about this technology in the article: . If interested, you can read.

How it all works: The Smart TV must be connected to our router. Via Wi-Fi network or cable. It doesn't matter. The computer on which we want to run the media server and from which we want to play video, photos, or music on the TV must be connected to the same router. The main thing that devices were on the same local network (were connected through one router). This does not mean that there should be only one computer and one TV, there can be several of them. Moreover, there may be other devices on the network that support DLNA. For example: game consoles, TV set-top boxes, satellite receivers, etc.

Before proceeding with setup, make sure that your computer and TV are connected to your Wi-Fi network, or using a network cable to your router. Check if the Internet works on the TV. If you don't know whether your TV supports DLNA, you can check the specifications for this information. I will say this, if the TV has a Smart TV, then everything will work.

And in the Microsoft Edge browser in Windows 10, it is possible to display videos, photos and music on TV directly from the browser. I wrote in the article how to do this.

I think we have figured out all the nuances, now we can start setting up.

Displaying video from Windows 10 to TV: a quick and easy way

A video, film, almost any video can be displayed from a computer to a TV in a few clicks of the mouse. Turn on the TV. Make sure it is connected to the internet (to your router).

On the computer, open the folder with the video, and right-click on the file that we want to play on the TV (Smart TV). Next, move the cursor to the “Transfer to device” item. Our TV should appear there. If it says “Searching for devices...”, then you need to wait a little. Leave the menu open, or try again in a couple of seconds. As you can see in the screenshot below, Windows 10 found two TVs on me: LG and Philips.

We choose a TV. The player control window will immediately appear. In it, you can control video playback on the TV, add other files to the playlist, see information on the TV, etc.

The TV will immediately start playing the currently running movie.

We have just started watching video from a computer to a TV using DLNA technology. As you can see, everything works. And all this wirelessly, over the air. It's over if you have both devices connected via Wi-Fi.

Starting a DLNA server on Windows 10 using standard means

Above we looked at a method where you can send files to a TV from a computer. But there is still a great opportunity when we can view all files from the TV (to which access is open), which are stored on our computer. I think this is exactly what you need.

To run the DLNA server, you can use third-party programs, for example, "Home Media Server (UPnP, DLNA, HTTP)". I wrote about setting up using this program in an article. This program is suitable for all TVs. But each manufacturer, as a rule, has its own program. LG, for example, has Smart Share. The setup I wrote about.

Well, on the other hand, why do we need third-party programs if everything in Windows 10 can be configured using built-in tools.

1 First of all, we need to open the “Media Streaming Options”. This item is located in the control panel. You can simply start typing its name in the search and launch it.

2 In the new window, click on the “Enable media streaming” button. Thus, we enable the DLNA server in Windows 10.

3 Next, enter the name of your DLNA server. Then, in the device list, you can allow or deny access to the media server for a specific device on your network. If you are connected to your home network, you can leave all devices.

If your TV is not on the list, then wait a little. Or close and reopen your media streaming settings.

Next to each device there will be a "Configure..." button. If necessary, you can set individual settings for each device.

4 You can now access the running server on your TV. It looks different on different TVs. On Philips TVs (with Android TV), for example, you need to launch the Media application. Or select this source from the available signal sources.

As you can see in the screenshot above, access will immediately be open to three standard folders: “Video”, “Images”, “Music”. You can view all the files that are in these folders on your TV.

These three folders are located on the system drive. Agree, it’s not very convenient to copy the necessary films and other files there all the time in order to watch them from the TV. Therefore, you can simply share other folders.

How to add a folder for a DLNA server

Launch Windows Media Player.

If you want to add a folder with videos, for example, then click on the corresponding item on the left and select “Manage video library”.

In the new window, click on the "Add" button. Select the folder to which you want to open access via DLNA, and click on the "Add folder" button.

That's it, the required folder will appear in the list and will be displayed on the TV. For example, I opened access to the “Video” folder in which I store films.

In this way you can add any folders or remove them from the list.

1 If you need to open your media streaming settings, you can do so from Windows Media Player. Just click on the "Stream" menu item and select "More streaming options...".

2 If your computer goes into sleep mode while playing files via DLNA and playback is interrupted, simply turn on the "High Performance" power plan.

Several articles

Many people think that Windows Media Player is gradually losing its popularity, but this is not entirely true. There have been so many updates and additions to the player lately that you can completely customize it to your liking. While playing different types of files, you can change the skin of the player and install various add-ons. Although the player has always been a core component of the Windows OS, the really good thing is that Windows Media has become in the last few years. The latest, version 12, contains a number of interesting features that will surely interest you. We will talk about these features and much more in this article.

Player update

If you still have an old version of the player installed, we strongly advise you to update it. Windows Media is completely free and always available for download on the official Microsoft website.

Automatic mode: Open Windows Media Player, press the Alt key, go to the Help menu and click Check for Updates.

If you don't want to manually check for updates each time, you can enable "automatic check". To do this, follow these steps:

Step 1

Open Windows Media Player, press the Alt key, expand the Tools menu and open Preferences.

Step 2

In the "Player" tab, specify how often the player checks for updates.

First start

When you launch Windows Media Player for the first time, you will need to take a few minutes to set up the player's initial settings. They consist of several steps:

Step 1

The Windows Media Player installation wizard will appear, which in the first step will prompt you to choose which type of settings to use: recommended or custom. If you choose the recommended one, the player will automatically set all the settings without your intervention. In this case, skip this section and go to the next one.

If you want to configure the player yourself, select the "Custom settings" option and click the "Next" button.

Step 2

The "Privacy Options" dialog box will open first. Check the boxes next to the items you really want to use and click the "Next" button.

Step 3

At this point, WMP will ask if you want to add a shortcut to the desktop and quick launch bar, and will prompt you to mark it as the default. Set the desired settings and click "Next".

Step 5

At the final stage, the player will offer to set up an online store to access paid content. Select "Do not set up an online store" and click the "Finish" button.

Always remain anonymous online

When installed, Windows Media Player generates a unique identifier for your computer. This identifier is used in many places, including some web resources. Thanks to him, Windows Media Player can independently request information about media data and exchange service information. While the developers claim that the player does not transmit any personal information, there are times when they can track what you are watching. If you don't want player usage information to be accidentally leaked online, disable this feature. For this:

Step 1

Hold the "Alt" key and then open the "Tools" menu and select "Options".

Step 2

Go to the "Privacy" tab and uncheck the box next to "Send a unique code ...".

Update codec

After you have installed a new version of Windows Media Player, you will also need to install additional codecs to support some file types. A codec is nothing more than an add-on for Windows Media Player that helps to identify and play many file formats. We recommend installing the "K-lite kodek" codec pack. It alone is enough to enable support for almost all audio and video data formats. You can download it from the official website of the developer.

It is also worth enabling the option to automatically download codecs by going to the player settings and in the “Player” tab, check the item “Automatically download codecs”.

Adding covers and visualizations to the player

Covers and visualizations will make using the player more enjoyable and allow you to customize the appearance to your taste. The only problem is that you can no longer download them from the official Microsoft website, so you will have to search for covers and visualizations on the Internet.
