I have several old Nokias (Nokia 6230 and 6230i) living on my balcony. These phones are technically fully functional and therefore I would like to use them in my projects where communication such as sending and receiving SMS is required. There is quite a lot of material on working with phones on the Internet. In particular, I can point to a very good set of articles that describe in detail how to send and receive SMS in PDU mode here

PDU mode is a clever way to send and receive SMS not only in ASCII, but also, for example, in Cyrillic.

Nokias of the mentioned series (6230 and 6230i) have a USB interface, connect and work perfectly and reliably with a computer.
From an OS point of view, the phone looks like a modem connected to a virtual com port.
It would seem that everything is fine, but these Nokias do not charge the batteries. When connected to a USB port, the phone responds to the connection, but says “not charging” on the screen. After the battery is discharged, the phone turns off, despite the presence of power from the computer.

I researched the issue and found a solution on how to make a Nokia 6230, for example, connected to a USB port, work as a connected device and charge the battery.

Studying materials online on the design of Nokia's battery charging mechanism yielded the following. The phone itself only has part of the charging mechanism. The phone circuit contains a key that controls the supply of charging current to the battery, a mechanism for measuring the charging current, charging voltage and voltage on the battery. Nokia has two charging modes - in the documentation they are called “current” and “special”.

The standard Nokia charger is a charging current generator. The words “current generator” mean exactly that the charger is a device with a high output impedance and tries to provide a stable current to the load.
The combination of the charging subsystem in the phone and external charging provides full charging.
In the documentation we were able to find parameters for both charging modes.
The current mode is characterized by a relatively high open circuit voltage (9.3 volts) and a high charging current (300 - 950 mA). The phone turns on charging (more precisely, it does not turn off the battery) if the charging current is at least 300 mA at a voltage of at least 5.54 volts. If any parameter goes beyond the specified limits, the charging key will be closed and the message “not charging” will appear on the display.

The special mode is activated if the input voltage is in the range of 4.65 - 5.2 volts. If the input voltage is below 4.65 volts or in the range of 5.2 - 5.54 volts, the phone will consider the situation unacceptable and will not turn on charging.
For a special mode, the charging current must be at least 90 mA.

Nokia's documentation on charging modes mentions that a special mode is intended for charging from solar panels and other sources with a small and unstable output current.

Thus, to enable battery charging in Nokia, you must provide a voltage in the range of 4.65-5.2 volts and a current of at least 90 mA after turning on charging in a special mode, or a voltage of more than 5.2 volts and a current of about 300 mA in current mode.

An experiment with a Nokia 6230i and a laboratory power supply showed that charging does not turn on if the voltage is less than 5.3 volts. It was not possible to get the phone into special charging mode.

The standard USB port has a voltage lower than the required 5.3 volts and therefore the phone does not turn on the charging mode.

To increase the voltage, I decided to use a ready-made Step-up converter board. A search on dieextrim-ebay gave me the LM2577 Adjustable Step-up Power Converter Module DC-DC board, which is a step-up converter. The board can operate with an input voltage from 3 to 30 volts and produce an output voltage from 4 to 35 volts with a maximum current of up to 3 A. When the converted power is more than 15 watts, a radiator is needed. I bought such a board for 71 rubles with delivery (end of 2013). Surprisingly, the board arrived quite quickly and turned out to be fully functional. Here she is:



I set the board's output voltage to 5.4 volts. The experiment showed that the phone in this mode turns on charging from time to time. The battery is fully charged all the time, or rather the indicator on the screen shows full charge. After a couple of months of working in this mode, I let the phone discharge before turning off - 2 days. For a battery about 9 years old - an excellent result :)

In theory, charging should begin when voltage is applied and a little more than 5 volts, however, at a voltage of up to 5.3 - 5.4 volts, my phone wrote “not charging.” This may be due to the fact that I had documentation for a newer phone. I was unable to find documents describing charging conditions specifically for the Nokia 6230i.

When I was looking into connecting the phone, I did not have a Nokia-specific connector. I considered it unreasonable to buy a cable for 800-900 rubles and soldered the wires directly to the connector and protected the soldering area with hot glue:

As usual, literally a week later in one of the Moscow Auchan stores, I accidentally came across the required cable for an insignificant 50 rubles. I bought this cable and may use it for the next craft with Nokia, fortunately I still have several of them.

The connector contacts are counted from left to right if the phone is positioned with the screen facing up and the connector facing you:

The first and second contacts are located to the left and right of the round charging connector, and they carry charging current.
Pins 5-8 are connected to the USB plug (+5 V, D+, D-, GND), respectively.
Contacts 3 and 4 can be connected to each other, so the phone detects the connection of the accessory, which it writes about on the screen. You don’t have to do anything with these contacts; this does not affect the phone’s operation as a modem or charging.
USB power (usually the red wire) is also supplied to the converter input. The increased voltage from the converter is supplied to the first pin of the POP connector.

    How to reset Nokia 5230 to factory settings
