Smartphone Xperia xz. Review of Sony Xperia XZ2 (H8216). The most powerful smartphone. Sony Xperia XZ1: a superb smartphone from Sony with a familiar design

Presented, perhaps, its most interesting flagship smartphone in recent years. The Xperia XZ3 is the first device in the Sony Mobile range to be equipped with an OLED display (with QuadHD resolution) with curved edges extending onto the sides, and you can control it by touching the side frames.

The smartphone is built on the same hardware platform as: the most productive Qualcomm processor today - Snapdragon 845, quite modest by today's standards 4 GB of RAM and 64 GB of internal memory, NFC, Bluetooth 5.0 and high-speed LTE Cat 18, which allows support by the operator's network the most modern communication technologies to achieve download speeds above 1 Gbit/s. The battery capacity is 3330 mAh, and supports fast wireless charging. There is support for microSD with a capacity of up to 512 GB, but the card occupies the second SIM slot.

We had the opportunity to study the device before its official premiere in Berlin. The Xperia XZ3 both looks and feels sleeker in the hand than its predecessor: the body thickness was reduced from 11.1 to 9.9 mm, although the width (from 72 to 73 mm) and height (from 153 to 158 mm) increased slightly. So the display here is larger - not 5.7, but 6 inches diagonally. The ratio of the display area to the area of the front panel of the smartphone is 80%, the total screen area has increased by 11%.

Thanks to OLED display technology in combination with Sony BRAVIA proprietary software, previously tested on premium OLED TVs of the Japanese brand, the Xperia XZ3, the company promises, will provide users with an “immersive cinematic experience.” The display of video content, including high dynamic range (HDR), will be accompanied by sound from loud stereo speakers capable of emulating surround sound, and a dynamic vibration system will complement the picture with tactile sensations. But you will have to use wireless headphones, or connect wired ones via the included USB-C adapter: the phone does not have an audio jack.

Since the OLED matrix does not waste energy displaying black pixels, the Xperia XZ3 has always-on screen technology. The matter is not limited to displaying clocks and notifications. It will be possible to personalize the XZ3's screen by setting different images on it, displaying the covers of music albums being played or photos from the gallery.

The Xperia XZ3 has the same camera as its predecessor, the XZ2: the 19-megapixel MotionEye sensor supports photo shooting with ISO sensitivity up to 12800 and video up to ISO 4000. You can also shoot super slow-motion video (960 frames per second) in FullHD or 4K video with high dynamic range (HDR).

The Xperia XZ3 feels like a well-built and durable smartphone, with Gorilla Glass 5 on both sides and a frame (just 3mm wide) made from 7000-series aluminum. The housing is certified for protection against dust and water (IP 65/68).

Sony Xperia XZ3 is equipped with a fundamentally new control interface - a side frame that is sensitive to touches and “slides” (sliding gestures). By quickly touching the frame on the right or left edge of the case twice in a row, you can call up the Side Sense interface - a panel with shortcuts to applications and/or actions, contacts, etc.

Quickly swiping your finger down the side works like a back button. The sensitivity of the smartphone frame to gestures can be adjusted, and Side Sense can, by analyzing the user’s habits, automatically show on the panel exactly those applications and actions that will be in demand at the moment.

Sony Xperia XZ3 will be one of the first (and perhaps the first, depending on when sales start) smartphones on the market running on the Android Pie operating system - the 9th version of the Google mobile platform. Traditionally for Sony devices, the interface of the device is not very different from stock Android, and OS and security system updates promise to be timely.

The company is not yet ready to name the exact date the Sony Xperia XZ3 will go on sale - they are talking about “mid-autumn”. The device will be sold in traditional black and white colors, as well as burgundy red and forest green.

It seems that Sony has adopted the manner of making two key announcements on smartphones per year from Samsung, which consistently shows the Galaxy S in the spring, and the larger Galaxy Note in the fall or closer to it. There is some logic to this. Sony introduced the new Xperia X line in the spring, consisting of the inexpensive and compact Xperia XA, a mid-range smartphone called the Xperia X, and the top-end Xperia X Performance. In the fall, it was logical to expect the Xperia X Compact - but it came not alone, but with another flagship, directly competing with the X Performance. The new product received the name Xperia XZ - and, to be honest, it is not easy to track the logic of its release. But I'll try.

The Xperia XZ boasts a 5.2-inch display versus the Performance's 5-inch, a USB Type-C port instead of microUSB, a fresh design, and a camera with a new electronic stabilizer, an infrared sensor, and an improved autofocus system. This is where the differences, by and large, end - both devices will be sold simultaneously, and at the same price: 49,990 / 50,990 rubles, depending on the version (with one/dual SIM cards and 32/64 GB of internal memory, respectively). As the hero of the famous animated series said, this is a turn.

Another funny moment, I already noted it in the preliminary review of the new product. Some time ago, we released news in which, among other things, we reported that the Sony Xperia Z family was leaving the scene, to which the Russian representative office of the company reacted harshly, justifying its position both by the fact that devices in this series are still on sale (a fact), and by the fact that that there was no official announcement of the cessation of development of the family. Well, we can consider the new product another answer - in its person, Sony Mobile continued both the X family and the Z line. Two birds with one stone - one smartphone.

⇡ Appearance, ergonomics and software

Sony does not betray itself, continuing to produce smartphones that are recognizable at first glance with its own corporate style - this is exactly what the company is loved and appreciated for. The rectangle with a large power button on the right side and slightly convex edges has not gone away. But the Xperia XZ features the new Loop Surface style introduced for this model and the little X Compact.

Sony Xperia XZ, front panel: in addition to the screen, there are two speakers (spoke and main), front camera, light sensor and status indicator (in the upper left corner)

Among the differences from other Xperia X, the most striking are the completely flat ends (top and bottom), sharp corners, a different design of the rear panel and general symmetry, which is expressed, for example, in the same bend of the edges of both the front panel and the back - the XZ looks more technologically, or something. This is a beautiful thing with a clearly defined origin and breed - just what you expect from a top-end Sony device.

Like other devices from the Xperia X family, the new product does not have inserts made of a material of a different color. The back and ends are made of matte metal, which hardly gets dirty (prints even on the black version are barely noticeable); the front panel is entirely covered with tempered Gorilla Glass (version unknown). Both speakers - both the conversational speaker and the main one - are output to it, as usual, which is why the call, if you put the smartphone flat, will be muffled. The volume, however, is sufficient.

The USB Type-C port is located, naturally, at the bottom, the mini-jack for headphones (such an outdated connector, if you still remember it) is at the top. There is a dedicated key to activate the camera and release the shutter. Slots for SIM cards and memory cards are located under a cover on the left side. Everything, in general, is arranged here in the same way as we are used to seeing in Xperia smartphones.

Sony Xperia XZ is water- and dust-proof according to the IP68 standard: this means that it can be kept at a depth of up to one and a half meters for half an hour - and nothing will happen to it. With the release of the waterproof iPhone 7, this simply becomes a standard for all older models, although Sony began making rugged phones on a global scale almost before anyone else.

The colors are silver, black and “night sky”, that is, dark blue. We ended up with the device in exactly this color - and it’s really good.

The XZ has a thinner body than the Performance (8.1 mm versus 8.7 mm), but the large bezels around the larger display prevent us from talking about the same comfort of use. Unfortunately, it is extremely difficult to handle the new product with one hand. The width of the frames could be attributed to the protected design, but Samsung, let us remind you, the S7 edge or Note 7 with a screen that crawls onto the sides are also protected.

The fingerprint scanner, as usual, is built into the side button. It works quickly, the percentage of unsuccessful identification attempts is low - as long as the fingers are intact. If you get a scratch, you will have to record the fingerprint again. This is inevitable for capacitive sensors. With Sony, due to the small scanner area, this will have to be done more often. The scanner works exclusively with the device locked; no additional functions - in the manner of, for example, Huawei - can be attached to it.

XZ Premium is a smartphone that literally blew up the MWC 2017 exhibition. Everyone was talking about it, first of all, because of the unprecedented ability to record crazy Slow-Mo, and secondly, because of the use of the top-end Snapdragon 835 processor.

We bring to your attention a review of the Sony Xperia XZ Premium. In it we will figure out whether the latest flagship from SONY is good and whether it is worth the money, which is not a small amount. We also suggest looking at others.

Price and main characteristics

In Russia, a smartphone sells for about 55,000 rubles; for this money, the buyer will receive a device with the following characteristics:

Display: 5.5-inch IPS with a resolution of 2160x3840 pixels, covered with protective glass Corning Gorilla Glass 5;
processor: Qualcomm Snapdragon 835;
RAM: 4 GB;
internal memory: 64 + micro SD flash cards up to 256 GB;
camera: front - 13 MP; main - 19 MP with 1/2.3-inch sensor, 5-axis stabilization;

Equipment and appearance

XZ Premium is made in the signature SONY design. Its body is made of glass (front and back) and a metal side frame, the main surfaces are covered with a high-quality oleophobic layer, but the device still collects fingerprints. The case has an angular shape, but its frames are rounded, which improves the ergonomics of the device.

In addition to classic colors, the XZ Premium is available in glossy black, blue and chrome. All paint options look great and it’s really hard to take your eyes off. By the way, the smartphone is protected from moisture and dust according to the IP68 standard.

Last year, the company launched four flagship models. As we see them: an ultra-flagship, an optional flagship, a practical flagship and a flagship for those who have a phobia of normal (for 2017) sizes. We're talking about the XZ Premium, XZs, XZ1 and XZ1 Compact. While waiting for the Sony Xperia XZ2 (preview) for a detailed study, we decided to spend our time usefully - release a review of the top-end Sony Xperia XZ1! Unboxing

Equipment and design

The box, although simple, is quite nice to look at. Our kit is bare, but buyers of a store-bought XZ1 receive a USB cable, a charger, documentation, and the smartphone itself. The set is modest, there are no headphones, cases or other accessories, but purchasing them is not a problem. We also received a touch-sensitive book case for testing, which allows you to use all the functions of the Xperia XZ1 without opening it. Quite a convenient thing for those who care about the safety of the device, but do not like to glue films.

The smartphone is available in four colors – pink, blue, black and silver. If previously Sony was known for the catchy colors of its devices (remember, for example, the purple Z Ultra and yellow Z1 Compact), then recently the colors have become calm - so the current blue and pink are almost gray. But this is by no means a bad thing, our blue Xperia XZ1 looks very nice.

Let's go through everything that is on the case. At the bottom there is a microphone and a USB Type-C port, on the right there are four buttons (a two-stage camera key, a lock button and a volume rocker). The lock has a built-in fingerprint scanner, the quality of which can be described as “not very good”. I got accurate detections in no more than 40% of cases; slightly wet or dirty fingers are not recognized at all. I have no complaints about the location of the scanner - my finger easily rests on it when the phone is in my hand, and it’s not difficult to unlock the device lying on the table (only here you need to use your index finger). The volume rocker is not in the lower half of the end, for which many thanks to Sony engineers.

Go ahead. On top there is a microphone and a 3.5 mm headphone jack. As you know, the XZ2 no longer has an audio jack. On the left there is only a sliding tray for SIM and SD cards. As you may have noticed, when listing the package, I did not indicate the needle for removing it. And it really isn’t there, because the tray is removed without it. When I turned on the phone for the first time, still without a SIM card, and discovered such a slot, I was immediately happy and prepared to add it to the list of advantages. And then I decided to insert a SIM card, pulled out the slot... and the phone rebooted. Yes, seriously, the top-end Sony does not have hot-swap SIM cards. When you remove and insert a tray (even an empty one), the Xperia XZ1 reboots. Strange approach.

We continue to study the device from all sides. At the back you can see a protruding camera module, a strip with all sorts of little things (light sensor, flash, NFC) and the Xperia logo. The back is metal and the antenna strips are neatly placed on the sides - you may not even notice them (note to Chinese manufacturers), and for more reliable reception of wireless networks, Sony made the top and bottom ends plastic. In total, the XZ1 has four antennas capable of receiving gigabit Internet.

In front, everything is standard for Sony: front camera, logo, stereo speakers (not bad - louder than the XZ Premium, and the sound itself is more pleasant), sensors and screen. The frames around it are large, especially the indents at the top and bottom. From the front, the Xperia XZ1 does not look like a flagship from the end of 2017, but this can only bring aesthetic displeasure, because the phone’s ergonomics are fine.

The screen itself has a diagonal of 5.2" and a resolution of 1920x1080 pixels; Sony is very conservative in these parameters. But this is a TRILUMINOS display with HDR, X-Reality, Dynamic Contrast Enhancer and a bunch of other beautiful words in the description of the device. I can say that Xperia The XZ1 is a good display with good color reproduction, high-quality black and white colors, eye-searing maximum brightness (but in the summer it will be good in the sun) and maximum viewing angles. It may not be the best screen among modern flagships, but there’s definitely nothing to criticize it for. And Compared to the XZ Premium's 4K display, it somehow doesn't seem any worse.

Software

Sony's friendship with Google has led to the fact that the Xperia XZ1 comes with Android 8.0.0 Oreo out of the box. On top of the operating system is a proprietary Sony shell, known as Xperia Home. It is distinguished by its originality - it does not resemble either Chinese firmware or bare Android. There is both a desktop and an application menu, and a swipe from above starts a search for them. Standard Android applications have been replaced with Sony software, designed in a generally recognizable style. There are also several unusual applications like Movie Creator (allows you to collect movies from photos and videos shot on the Xperia XZ1, plus periodically makes them automatically), “Sketch” (a convenient application for drawing), a built-in video editor or a utility for customizing a case called “Stylish” case". I don’t want to talk about the shell in detail, besides, screenshots can do this much better than me.

I'll focus on just one detail: Xperia Loops. These are built-in live wallpapers that respond to touches of the screen, touches of the fingerprint scanner, and connection of the charger. They give the feeling of some kind of response from the device - it not only does what it should, but also reacts to you and what you do. This creates some kind of magic comparable to what Meizu fans loved so much in its legendary touch circle. Those at Sony who came up with this are great guys.

The phone has a 3.5 mm audio jack and a sea of Bluetooth standards, so Sony WH-1000XM2 headphones were used for the test. For audio, the XZ1 has a lot of bells and whistles, but the Qualcomm Aqstic codec included in the Snapdragon 835 produces decent sound on its own. The volume reserve of the 1000XM2 in conjunction with the XZ1 is abundant, the bass is expressive, and the highs are clear. We recommend 1000XM2 for any modern smartphone.

Cameras

The main camera of the Xperia XZ1 is exactly the same module that Sony has already used in the XZ Premium, the company calls it Motion Eye. At the heart of everything is a 1/2.3" 19-megapixel Exmor RS sensor with 1.22 micron pixels. Wide-angle 25mm G Lens optics provide an f/2.0 aperture, which is far from records in the modern smartphone world. But it is a record Another feature: thanks to the memory built into the camera sensor, the Xperia XZ1 can shoot slow-mo with a frame rate of 960 fps. The SteadyShot software package (works on five axes) is responsible for stabilization, and the maximum ISO level when taking photographs is 12,800. Autofocus is hybrid and predictive, that is, it predicts where it will be necessary to focus at the next moment in time.

Sounds great, but how does this work in practice? To get started, download a huge selection of photos and videos from this link. This will make it more convenient to view frames in the text. So, during the day in bright sun and indoors in good light, everything is quite good, the detail of the images is especially pleasing. Color rendition is often also pleasing, and focusing works quickly and accurately. However, the camera app here is old, which means there are known problems in place. We're talking about the automatic mode, which selects the frame settings depending on the scene. I present to your attention several examples with auto mode (and automatically selected settings) and manual mode (without any settings or intervention, everything is by default) with XZ1 and XZ Premium (the camera is the same, let me remind you):

On the first couple, the automation saw backlight in the scene and the need to expand the dynamic range. In fact, the contrast was lost, the exposure was raised, and the background remained overexposed, only now it seemed to be painted in watercolors.

auto and manual mode without intervention

On the second couple, the camera saw the person and the backlight, using not only HDR, but also beauty effects. The result is a mannequin with an unnatural color of lips and skin instead of a child. Alas, the face is “beautified” even in manual mode, but at least not so actively.

auto and manual mode without intervention

On the third pair, the machine wanted to turn a daytime frame in bright sunshine into a frame taken in cloudy conditions.

everything is in the car

Actually, look at the four photos above. All of them were obtained within one minute in one flowerbed, but they all had “different times of day.” No comments.

auto and manual mode without intervention

The fourth pair shows how the automation wanted to expand the dynamic range, but instead completely killed the interior lighting of the cafe.

And here I took a photo in auto mode and manual mode, lowering the exposure (-1EV) and setting the shutter speed to 1/2 second (automation used 1/8 second). The lighting became more natural, the asphalt acquired texture, and the trees gained volume.

auto and manual mode with settings

Another couple where the automatic is opposed to the manual mode with corrected exposure (-2EV) and shutter speed (1/4 second versus 1/50 second). Examples with XZ Premium in different modes:

photo from Xperia XZ Premium

As mentioned above, the camera is capable of good shots in sufficient lighting. What good things are there... You can get really cool photos on the Xperia XZ1, XZ1 Compact and XZ Premium! But as soon as the sun disappears, evening sets in, or you enter a room, something strange begins to happen: the contrast increases, noise appears, the white balance begins to fluctuate, the picture loses its texture and seems lifeless. Flagship-level photographs can be obtained on the XZ1, but only in ideal or close to ideal conditions. In other cases, you will get just a good, and sometimes even unsatisfactory result. And, of course, there is a dependence on the season. Xperia's algorithms tend to increase contrast and decrease exposure, and in winter in Siberia the photos come out very dull. Below are the spring and winter selections:

spring photos from XZ1

winter photos from XZ1

The front camera of the XZ1 is quite decent: 13 megapixels, a 1/3.06" sensor, f/2.0 aperture, SteadyShot stabilization. Selfies are decent, but with one caveat: before you take pictures of yourself, be sure to go to the settings and turn off the soft effect skin. Otherwise, you will look like a person with a generous amount of foundation applied all over your face. Without this option, the beautifier (infection!) still works, but at least it does not shave your mustache.

selfie with soft skin effect

with and without soft skin effect

The video is recorded in 4K and is recorded well. The picture is pleasingly detailed, and SteadyShot digital stabilization works effectively, almost completely compensating for shaking when walking and without making the video “drunk” (however, with a lack of light, the picture doubles). The sound is recorded sensitively, while there is no emphasis on the operator, and everything that happens around is also perfectly audible. When there is a sharp transition from close-up to distant and vice versa, the focus is adjusted smoothly and leisurely. This may seem like some kind of shielding of the jamb, but I like this approach even more than a sharp jump in focus in other devices. During recording, tap focusing does not work and the exposure is not adjusted. What about shooting video at 960 fps? This feature has many limitations (only 720p resolution, narrow image capture angle, very short duration of the moment that can be recorded in super slow motion), but if you adapt to them, the result is simply amazing. The video is slowed down 32 times, allowing you to enjoy very fast events. It is worth noting another drawback of this mode: due to the high frame rate, the camera has very little time to create each frame - this is akin to shooting with a very short shutter speed. That is, when shooting indoors or at dusk, the result will be very sad - you need a lot of light for a digestible video sequence. Download examples of videos and photos from here.

Performance and tests

The heart of the Sony Xperia XZ1 is the Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 chipset. This is a 10nm system-on-chip containing eight cores, where the maximum clock speed of the most powerful quartet is 2.45 GHz. The SoC also includes an Adreno 540 video accelerator. The company is traditionally not very generous with memory; the option with 4 GB of RAM and 64 GB of ROM is the only one. However, for most buyers this volume will be enough. A microSD slot is available, it replaces one of the SIM trays. Benchmarks:

With games, I think everything is clear. Snapdragon 835 is one of the best chipsets for Android smartphones today, so it can easily handle all, even the most difficult and unoptimized games. Tested in Asphalt Extreme, Unkilled, World of Tanks, Last Day on Earth, Injustice 2, SuperTuxKart and several simpler games. The 10 nm process technology also provides acceptable heat levels. Significant throttling also helps with this. The scores in AnTuTu are silent about it, but GFXBench sees everything: over 15 iterations, the scores in Manhattan 3.1 drop from 2358 to about 1850, and by the end of the long test they break the mark of 1800. Not critical.

Normal use – Asphalt Extreme – video display

Now about the battery. When the Xperia XZ1 was first introduced, I saw 2700 mAh in the specifications and thought that autonomy would be the key drawback of the device. Was wrong. Sony programmers responsible for power consumption are no less legendary than those who write camera algorithms - only their legend is in the other direction. They were somehow able to make a 2700 mAh battery discharge slower than many batteries with a noticeably larger capacity. With normal use, I got almost seven hours of screen time in two days without recharging. At maximum brightness, the smartphone discharges noticeably faster; our traditional tests showed that it will last for five hours of gaming or six hours of video playback. However, I already said that the maximum brightness of the XZ1 simply burns out your eyes, so you are unlikely to want to use it.

conclusions

Sony Xperia XZ1 is a rather controversial device. It does not have the highest-end camera by flagship standards, a slurred fingerprint scanner, and huge frames that make its design frankly outdated. At the same time, it also has a lot of advantages: the possibility of super slow-motion shooting, good sound, the function of creating 3D models of objects, a nice metal body, a friendly shell, an excellent screen and the highest performance. The Xperia XZ1 may not be the best smartphone on the market, but it’s also not a device from the past, a miraculously saved dinosaur. The issue of price is important here. The official price of 49,990 rubles does not seem like an incredibly good deal, but you can find a device significantly cheaper (about 20 thousand) - but that’s a completely different matter! We are waiting for Xperia XZ2.

Sony has made it a rule to present its flagship smartphones to the public at every well-known consumer electronics exhibition (MWC and IFA). As part of IFA 2016, the top representative of the Xperia line was announced - a model with the XZ index.

Unusual style

The stylish and unusual design instantly attracts the attention of others to the smartphone. Its aluminum alloy body looks solid and fits firmly in any hand. The only things that stand out from the overall picture are the large frames at the top and bottom of the screen. The display is made of 2.5D glass, under which is hidden a proprietary IPS matrix with FullHD resolution (1920x1080 pixels). With a 5.2" screen diagonal, there are absolutely no questions about the ease of operation with one hand or the readability of the picture. Moreover, the brightness reserve is enough for all life situations.

Power

At the heart of the smartphone is the Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 processor, typical for the entire family of flagships based on the Android OS. It works in tandem with 3 GB of RAM, handling the heaviest applications without any hesitation. The hardware power reserve will be enough for at least a year ahead. But the battery capacity looks somewhat underestimated for a top-end device and amounts to 2900 mAh. In contrast to the above, it is necessary to note the effective energy-saving algorithms of Sony phones, so you are unlikely to have to worry about the battery life.

Photo and video

An equally strong point of the Sony Xperia XZ is photo and video shooting. The main camera with an impressive 23 MP and a maximum aperture of f/2.0 boasts ultra-fast hybrid autofocus that captures the subject almost lightning fast, and the ability to record 4K videos. And the front camera with a resolution of 13 MP takes good selfies and can recognize faces.

Flagship

A fingerprint scanner, Qualcomm QuickCharge 3.0 fast charging, dust and moisture protection according to IP68 standard - the flow of flattering words about the smartphone is quite difficult to stop. And is it necessary? After all, he deserves them to the fullest.
