7Z Archive File Format

Released in 1999 by developer Igor Pavlov based on the 7-Zip program, the 7Z format is capable of supporting various types of data compression, encryption, and pre-processing algorithms. It is considered "deprecation-proof" because the format is supported by a large number of newer archivers. 7Z is currently an open source extension available for public use since 2008. The compression methods that 7Z files support are LZMA, PPMD, BCJ, BZip2, and Deflate. The open architecture allows you to queue compression, conversion, and encryption methods. This file type is used to store and send/receive particularly large files or groups of them. Would you like to use this versatile archive file yourself? Try here.

Technical information about 7Z files

Files up to 16 billion GB (16 exbibytes) can be compressed using the 7-Zip program with a sufficiently large compression ratio, and also use the AES-256 encryption method. Dictionaries can be up to 4 GB in size. At the same time, the compression speed is up to 1 Mb / s, and the decompression speed is up to 20 Mb / s (in the case of using processors with a clock frequency of 2 GHz). The length of the unpacking code is 5 KB. 7Z files can be multi-volume archives that can be converted into a single file after the archive has been moved across volumes. It should be noted that the 7Z format does not support storage of file system permissions (ACL UNIX or NTFG), i.e. using the 7Z format for backup and archiving can be problematic due to the possibility of bypassing protection.

Additional information about the 7Z format

7-Zip is the latest version of a free and powerful file archiver for Windows. This archiver, despite the fact that it is a free open source product and distributed under the GNU LGPL license (with the exception of the unRAR decompressor code, which has license restrictions), thanks to its own 7z format, it surpasses even such popular commercial archiving programs in terms of data compression , as well as .

7-Zip is a reliable, time-tested archiver that uses various algorithms and works with a huge number of formats, both for creating archives and for extracting data.

The following algorithms are supported:

LZMA2, LZMA, Bzip2, PPMd and Deflate

7 - zip works with the following data formats:

Compression and decompression: 7z, BZIP2 (TBZ, TBZ2, TB2, BZ2), GZIP (TGZ, GZ), ZIP (JAR), TAR, XZ;

Data recovery only (decompression): CAB, ARJ, CPIO, DMG, CHM, CramFS, DEB, MBR, FAT, HFS, ISO, LZMA, LZH (LHA), NSIS, NTFS, MBR, MSI, RAR, SquashFS, UDF, RPM, VHD, Z (TAZ), XAR.

However, it is still worth noting that the highlight of this archiver, perhaps, is the presence of its proprietary compression format - .7z, which uses its own highly efficient data compression algorithm LZMA2 \ LZMA (Lempel Ziv Markov Algorithm). Compared, for example, with such a popular compression format as .zip, the compression ratio of the 7-Zip archiver into its own data packaging format. 7z is an order of magnitude higher than that of the same popular WinRAR and WinZip, which is achieved through the use of various normalizing converters and filters, which, together with the possibility of using 7zip for free, is undoubtedly a weighty argument in favor of using this particular archiver.

7Zip has an extremely minimalistic interface (which is not the most important thing for programs with similar functionality), the program can be easily configured and used from the explorer context menu, choosing the most needed functions for everyday tasks.

If you are looking for a free, simple, and at the same time powerful archiver, then in this case, 7-zip is the best fit.

In this article, I will teach you how to unpack archives. It's very simple.

The archive is one file with a set of others to reduce their space.

They are very effective to use if access to information is needed very rarely and the space occupied by it is large.

They usually have extensions:

Well, others. There are a lot of extensions. These are the most popular.

The archive can be compressed and it seriously saves free space. They are also often used to convey large amounts of information. This is especially useful if you want to transfer it over the Internet, and the traffic limit is limited.

Even if you put a password on the archive, it will provide reliable protection of information. And for this, you just need the skills to work with them.

Additionally, I want to say that it is not necessary to completely extract all files. You can only get what you need. This is very convenient than digging through the whole heap of information.

To unpack ZIP, you can do with Windows tools. In other cases, you will have to use - archiver.

Archiver is a program for working with archives.

In the example, I will use the 2 most popular and universal ones:

  1. WinRar is shareware.
  2. 7zip is completely free.

It is worth noting that unpacking creates a copy of the files in open form and therefore you can safely delete the unpacked archive ( not always like this). Now I will show you how to do it.

You can see this instruction both in the article and in the video. It explains everything in great detail.

Unpack ZIP with Windows Explorer

Windows Explorer allows you to unpack archives with the ZIP extension. To do this, right-click on it. In the context menu that appears, select "Extract all ..." as in the picture below.

Then a window will appear. In it, specify the path where to unpack and proceed with the extraction.

This method only works with the ZIP format. For other formats, you need to use a third-party archiver.

Unzip with 7-zip

Download the free 7-zip program. For 32-bit or for 64-bit . It will allow you to quickly and easily unpack various archive formats. Look at the bit depth in the characteristics of your computer.

After installing it, a 7-zip tab will appear in your context menu. Go to it and select "Unpack" as in the image below.

In the window, specify the extraction path ( by default its location).

The files will appear in the location you specified.

Unpack with Winrar

Winrar is a very convenient program and works with all extensions. It is paid, but has a free trial period of 40 days. Then you will be constantly shown a window about buying a license. In general, it is free to use.

Download it from the official site and install.

Unpacking in it is the same as in 7-zip. They differ in convenience and additional features.

As you can see on the left, there are several additional functions that simplify the work. Confirm the extraction and navigate to the unpacked files.

Unpacking a damaged archive

When unpacking, the error "The archive is damaged" occurs and in order to extract the files, you will need to use the capabilities of Winrar. Such an error can occur even if 1 kilobyte of information is damaged, and therefore it makes sense to extract and see which files are still working.

When extracting, check the box next to "Do not delete files extracted with errors" and it will unpack. Look, it's on the left in the image above.

Please note that in this case, not all files will be functional.

Unpacking an archive consisting of several volumes

To do this, it is enough to collect all the volumes in one folder and unpack the first volume. Behind him, others will unpack along the chain.

Please note that all volumes must be present and should be extracted with the same archiver program that they were made with. Then everything will go well.

Look at the example in the picture below.

They look something like this, with an extension with a serial number added at the end. Otherwise, they are no different from ordinary ones.

I hope you managed to extract the files you need and you can easily do it in the future. If you have any questions - ask in the comments.

How do you unpack archives?

Poll Options are limited because JavaScript is disabled in your browser.

- The extension (format) is the characters at the end of the file after the last dot.
- The computer determines the file type precisely by extension.
- By default, Windows does not show filename extensions.
- Some characters cannot be used in the file name and extension.
- Not all formats are related to the same program.
- Below are all the programs with which you can open the 7Z file.

An archiver is a program that compresses computer files into an archive file (a folder with a .zip or .rar or .7z extension). In the process of compressing files, their total volume decreases, and the process itself is called file archiving. Also, the archiver successfully performs the reverse function - it unzips the files, that is, it takes them out of the archive and restores them to their original state. For example, many more files can fit on a flash drive if they are archived. Also, which is very necessary for a couple, when moving files to an archive, you can set a password for access to archived files, which means that you can open files only if you know the password.

To archive files, you need to download and install the archiver:
