Station history

What should be the station, bearing the name of Stalin, was chosen on a competitive basis. Among the proposed 42 projects, the idea of the famous architect A. Dushkin was recognized as the best. It was decided to build the station in 1940. However, due to the outbreak of the war, the work had to be postponed. And only on January 1, 1943 the station was opened. At first, she, like other metro stations in Moscow, was a bomb shelter. All subsequent peacetime, the Avtozavodskaya station was used for its intended purpose.

The horror of an exploding bomb was again felt by the passengers on February 6, 2004. In the morning rush hour, a terrorist act was committed in the second car on the Avtozavodskaya - Paveletskaya section. Explosives went off on the body of the suicide bomber. As a result, 41 people died, about two hundred more were injured. In memory of the terrible incident, a memorial plaque with the names of the victims appeared at the northern exit from Avtozavodskaya.

Name history

"Avtozavodskaya" was launched on January 1, 1943 in the process of the third phase of the construction of the subway. It was named the "Plant named after Stalin" in honor of the nearby plant, which bore the name of the "leader of the peoples." The station was renamed "Avtozavodskaya" 13 years later. The name is associated with the nearby Moscow Automobile Plant named after I. Likhachev. However, if you look closely, you can see depressions on the walls of the station. They remained from the letters of the first name. In 1992, the idea arose to rename the station to "Simonovo". But so far this idea has not been implemented.

Station Description

The track walls on Avtozavodskaya are lined with Baladin marble. The vault of the station hall is supported by two rows of thin square columns made of reinforced concrete. The columns are covered with ocher marble, and at the base they are trimmed with black diabase. The station is illuminated by fluorescent lamps.

The floor of the station hall is lined with gray and red granite slabs. At the ends of the hall there are escalators, which can be accessed through round entrance halls. Once upon a time, a sculpture of Stalin was located in the northern end. But when the northern exit to the city was being built, it was dismantled.

The main theme of the design of "Avtozavodskaya" is the defense of the Motherland and the heroic labor of the people during the war. Thus, eight mosaic panels on the themes “Soviet people during the Great Patriotic War” and “Workers of the ZIS plant (now ZIL)” are placed on the track walls.

In addition to mosaics, the station is decorated with four bas-reliefs made of gray-yellow limestone. Their names are "Metallurgists and Engineers", "Pilots and Designers", "Peoples of the North" and "Peoples of the Caucasus".

Specifications

The Avtozavodskaya station was built according to a special project. This is a three-span, columned, shallow station (laid at a depth of 11 meters). The load-bearing structures at the station are made of integral reinforced concrete. There are dead ends behind the station. There is a night sludge and maintenance of trains. In addition, part of the overpass "Avtozavodskaya" - "Kolomenskaya" is ground and runs along the Nagatinskiy metro bridge over the Moscow River.

Vestibules and transfers

There are two vestibules at Avtozavodskaya - southern and northern. The southern ground pavilion leads to Avtozavodskaya street. This is a two-story building, the facade of which is decorated with labrador semi-columns and glazed arches of doorways. The inner walls of the lobby are covered with cream marble.

Of the decorations, the most noticeable are large mosaics and murals. The smalt panel depicts the Red Square parade, and the murals depict pictures from the life of the ZIL factory workers. In the center of the composition is a huge red hammer and sickle, on which the words "Labor", "Peace", "Freedom", "Equality", "Brotherhood", "Happiness" are written.

The northern vestibule is less original. It is typical for the Moscow Metro. The exits of the northern underground vestibule lead to the underground passage on Masterkova Street.

Attractions

As nearby attractions, one can note the ancient Simonov Monastery, which was founded in the fifteenth century, the Streltsov Stadium, a reminder of constructivism - the Yuzhny cultural center.
