However, new color solutions bring some update effect. We're not even talking about the notorious golden body, but about the gray back panel on the black version of the smartphone. This shade is richer and more interesting than last year's black. Although there may be different opinions here.

The second difference, besides the color, is the changed front button. Now it feels a little different, it is not concave, but just slightly recessed into the body. And, of course, now there is no white square drawn on it. As for the remaining buttons, they are located identically to the previous model.

On the left side there are two round volume buttons, as well as a lever for turning on the silent mode. On the top edge is the Power button. All buttons are pressed quite firmly, with a distinct sound.

On the bottom edge there is a Lightning connector, a 3.5 mm jack for a headset, as well as holes for the speaker (right) and built-in microphone (left).

On the right side there is only a cradle for a SIM card of the Nano-SIM standard (the same SIM cards were used in the iPhone 5, but since then they have not become a standard for other smartphone manufacturers).

We also note the impeccable build quality: you can only admire how well all the elements of the case are made.

To sum up the design conversation, we admit that the introduction of previously unused colorways certainly brings an element of novelty, although the overall feeling remains that Apple is no longer keeping up with the market. The design of iPhone smartphones is good, but not so good that no significant changes can be made to it for two years.

Fingerprint's scanner

One of the main features of the new iPhone is the fingerprint scanner. It is located on the Home button. You can add multiple fingers to the device, and you can use the scanner when unlocking (instead of a password) or when making purchases in the App Store and iTunes Store, which is much more convenient than entering a password every time.

You can enter your fingerprint into the system either during the initial setup of your iPhone, or later, through the Settings menu. Creating a fingerprint is simple and intuitive: you are asked to touch the Home button several times (about 10-15 times). Once the system remembers your fingerprint, you can touch the Home button by placing your finger in different ways: a slight change in the angle of contact does not matter. After creating the fingerprint, we had no problems using it - the system quickly recognizes your finger.

Screen

The screen of the iPhone 5s has not changed compared to the previous version of the flagship of Apple's smartphone line. It's the same 4 inches and 1136x640 pixels, giving a density of 326 ppi. But if a year ago these parameters still looked acceptable, today they seem downright outdated. Most manufacturers equip their top-end devices with Full HD screens and achieve pixel density exceeding 400 ppi. And only Apple still didn’t even reach the 720p resolution.

Another thing is how necessary the race is for the number of pixels per inch and other characteristics. Because even despite the not-so-attractive parameters, the iPhone 5s screen still looks great and doesn’t cause a feeling of loose fonts or any other negative emotions. But it is significant that Apple, which three years ago became a trendsetter with its Retina display in the iPhone 4 and seemed to be the undisputed leader, today lags even behind the average.

Software

iPhone 5s comes with a pre-installed iOS 7 operating system. And a day and a half before the release of the new iPhone, it became available for download to owners of previous versions of iOS devices. Many copies have already been broken regarding iOS 7, and the Internet is full of parodies and demotivators on the topic of iOS 7 and the fight of Apple chief designer Jony Ive against skeuomorphism (imitation of real objects with their shadows, etc.).

We will not list the features of iOS 7, since this has already been done in the report from the Apple presentation, but we will tell you about our subjective impressions of using iOS 7.

First impression: she really looks fresh. Whether you like the new style or not, Apple has been missing a bold update like this for a long time. But the colors are still too acidic: it’s like being in a store of candy and other children’s sweets. In addition, many icons look so different from the previous version that they are difficult to find. For example, try to immediately find the Kiosk icon!

Second impression: Jony Ive, having got his hands on the design of iOS, apparently decided to remake it entirely, in every detail. Even little things like downloading apps look different now. And it’s impossible to say which is better. Just different (see right screenshot above). Perhaps it was not worthwhile to take on innovations so zealously - you could first, say, let people get used to the new visual style, and then introduce changes.

Third impression: the new fonts really made the system look more elegant and light. This is especially noticeable on the iPad, but on the iPhone everything has become more airy thanks to the fonts.

And lastly: a lot of really convenient and long-awaited things have appeared (for example, a single browser line or the ability to quickly get to the flashlight and Airplane mode), but their development is complicated by the need to get used to many others - purely external (that is, not containing new functionality or convenience) - changes.

Can we recommend iOS 7? We are all realists and understand that sooner or later all users of more or less new iPhone models will have to switch to it. Well, no one gives buyers of the iPhone 5s and 5c a choice at all. On the other hand, this is not such a tragedy. Everything changes and develops, and iOS 7 cannot be unequivocally assessed as more (or less) successful than iOS 6. Although we would prefer that all the innovations contained in it were divided into two full-fledged releases.

Performance

iPhone 5s runs on Apple's new SoC - A7 (remember that iPhone 5 had Apple A6). The main feature of the new SoC is the 64-bit “desktop class” architecture (as was said at the presentation).

If it were not for this feature, so far unprecedented for mobile devices, the characteristics of the new SoC would only cause disappointment and skepticism. Judge for yourself: the processor frequency is a ridiculous 1.3 GHz, and there are only two cores (although quad-core CPUs are already found even in budget devices). True, it uses the ARMv8 instruction set, on the basis of which the new architecture, called Cyclone, is made.

In addition, the exact model of the GPU is not reported, but presumably this is the sixth series of PowerVR SGX GPUs, which have not yet been used in other devices.

As for the amount of RAM, it remained unchanged compared to the iPhone 5 - 1 GB (which is again very small by modern standards).

But, in the end, it is pointless to draw any conclusions based on characteristics alone, and it is much more interesting to see what results the new iPhone demonstrates in benchmarks.

Let's start with browser tests: SunSpider 1.0, Octane Benchmark and Kraken Benchmark. In all cases, we used the Safari browser from iOS 7 on Apple devices, and Google Chrome on Android.

As we can see, the difference between the iPhone 5s and iPhone 5 is more than significant. But it is also significant that all competitors are left behind. Except that NVIDIA Shield (which, by the way, has the screen resolution closest to the iPhone) was able to outperform the new product in one of three tests. But otherwise the result is eloquent.

Now let's see how the iPhone 5s performs in Geekbench 2, a multi-platform benchmark that measures CPU and RAM performance.

The results of this test are seriously influenced by the number of CPU cores, so the result is quite natural: due to the more advanced architecture, the Apple iPhone 5s is far ahead of its predecessor, but at the same time noticeably inferior to multi-core Android competitors.

Here the difference between the iPhone 5 and 5s is no longer so striking, although it is still there, and quite significant.

Now let's look at the GPU performance. There are two multi-platform benchmarks available here: GFXBench (formerly GLBenchmark 2.7) and 3DMark. Let's start with the GFXBench results.

So what do we see? Previously, Apple devices reigned supreme in this benchmark. But now the picture has changed: at least two SoCs - NVIDIA Tegra 4 and Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 - are not inferior to the latest Apple SoC in terms of GPU performance, and in some ways even surpass it. The only good thing is the progress of the latter compared to the iPhone 5. Well, if we speak in isolation from the competition with Android devices, then the iPhone 5s, of course, looks like an ideal mobile gaming platform, and for at least another two years all new games will be tough for it.

The situation here is similar. The iPhone 5s showed generally excellent results (especially the Maxed out! sign in a weaker mode, which means that this test is too easy for the iPhone 5s), but in comparison with Android flagships they are no longer as impressive.

In general, judging by the benchmarks, a miracle did not happen: the Apple A7, coupled with 1 GB of RAM, performed on par with or even lost to Android flagships in most tests. But it left the Apple A6 far behind, so the progress within one platform is encouraging. In the end, this is even more important for iPhone users, because even when using multi-platform benchmarks, comparison with Android devices is not entirely correct: developers optimize their applications for Apple devices more carefully, and this allows them to use their hardware capabilities more efficiently. Therefore, despite the not the most outstanding result “in parrots”, the conclusion for practical use will be this: if you want to play the coolest mobile games in the next two years, buy an iPhone 5s. And it doesn’t matter how many bits, gigahertz and cores there are. For now this is not so important.

However, another conclusion is also important for the industry: Apple is finding it increasingly difficult to compete in this field, and if previously iOS devices were clearly the leaders in performance, but today the result is ambiguous, then it is possible that in a year Apple will already be catching up, and no software will help optimizations and other features of the iOS platform.

Autonomous operation

The battery capacity of the iPhone 5s has increased only slightly compared to the iPhone 5. And judging by the gaming tests (which take full advantage of the increased performance), this is clearly not enough. In GLBenchmark 2.5.1 in the Battery test, the iPhone 5 lasted (before automatic shutdown) about 2 hours 22 minutes (at maximum brightness and maximum settings). But the iPhone 5s didn’t even last up to two hours.

On the other hand, during everyday use, we did not feel a significant reduction in battery life compared to the iPhone 5. However, we only had the device on test for two days, so it’s too early to draw definite conclusions.

Note that when using GPU tests, the smartphone became very hot. It was uncomfortable to hold it in your hands.

Fully charging the battery takes less than two hours.

Communications and mobile internet

During the short time that we tested the iPhone 5s, we did not notice any problems with communication during telephone conversations. The voice of the interlocutor is quite loud and clear; we did not encounter any interruptions or weakening of the signal during the conversation (although we took the phone with both our left and right hands and tried to grasp it in different ways). The number of points demonstrating the signal level varied from 3 to 5.

The main intrigue was whether the new iPhone supported Russian LTE networks. And here the situation is mysterious: judging by the characteristics, European models have support for Russian bands. But in fact, the iPhone 5s cannot connect to 4G. This information was confirmed by representatives of the operators, for whom this also came as a surprise. Apparently, the iPhone 5s has a software blocking of networks that are not approved or tested by Apple. Thus, one can hope that by the time the iPhone 5s is officially released in Russia, LTE support will appear, but now it is not there. And the main question here is whether “gray” smartphones previously imported from Europe will receive LTE support or whether they will remain without access to 4G.

In the second part of the article, we will test the smartphone screen in detail, as well as study the camera in detail and compare it with the iPhone 5, after which we will summarize.
